Faulty amplifier by
RJH[_4_]
I've just been given a mini-system - Denon D-110. The type that's
connected with ribbons. Anyway, it all lights up and appears to operate,
but no sound. Low level of hiss increases when the volume control turned
up, very slight signal on phono, but nothing through aux or the other
components.
Opened it up and checked all the fuses - fine. However,...

turntable oil by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
I'm currently doing occasional 'batches' of LP - digital transfers. This
is enjoyable as I keep finding discs I'd forgotten about, etc. However I'm
starting to get the impression that my Technics direct-drive turntable is
slowing down when switched off more quickly than previously.
This makes me wonder if it is time for me to add a tiny spot of the right
kind of oil to its bearing. Not oiled it...

Spindle idler for Technics RS-BX606 by
Glenn Richards
As subject line, I have one of these cassette decks sitting around with
a broken tooth on the spindle idler. (It's 20 years old so has probably
gone a bit brittle). This causes a jolt every revolution which upsets
the sound.
Any ideas where I'd be able to a. find out what the part number is, and
b. source one for a reasonable cost? (Our local repair shop closed down
many years ago sadly, as...

Freecycle by
Dave Plowman (News)
This is on my local group:-
***********
Stereo - Consonance Audio Reference 880 valved integrated amp and
Reference 2.2 CD player
I'm offering these items through Freecycle rather that selling them
because while they are in working order now they have been repaired in the
past. They are probably only of value to a hobbyist of valved audio
equipment. The items are twelve years old. The...

Refurbish cassette deck motor by
RJH[_3_]
I've got a 1993 Sony cassette deck - K611S - and the capstan motor has
recently started making a loudish hum. I tried a little lithium grease
on the spindle, and the noise diappeared for a few minutes. The pitch
varies when the speed adjustment screw is twiddled.
The part (X33566461) appears out of stock everywhere, and the fault does
crop up on forums. I'm reluctant to chuck too much money...

Trying to repair CD-player, genuine Sony parts?? by
Martin Schöön
I am trying force my temperamental CD player back in line. It
has always had a somewhat troubled personality. It often refused
to play the last few tracks of a few of my CDs. It has come up
with a new trick lately. It refuses to even acknowledge the
existence of certain CDs (they work fine in all other players
I try) and in some cases it ignores certain tracks.
I started by cleaning the...

Panasonic spares by
Eiron[_3_]
OK, I know this is the wrong group but there are plenty of experts here...
I inherited a Panasonic P-AX100E HD projector, which is quite good
apart from the infamous yellowish blob due to a burned blue polarizer.
Any idea where I can get spares? Panasonic UK are not helpful.
It seems a shame to throw it out for the sake of two small pieces of
pink plastic film.

BBC iPlayer on Linux query by
froggy
I've just installed Linux (Debian stable version) on an unused laptop I
had lying around (no mean feat considering I'm no computer or
engineering geek!) which I use to listen to Radio 3 through the BBC iPlayer.
Browser is Google Chrome.
The audio is streamed through the usb output into an M2Tech HiFace
digital audio interface and then onto a Cambridge Audio DacMagic.
Is there a simple way of...

Microphone directionality by
Eiron[_3_]
Those electret microphone capsules are quite good but omnidirectional.
Is there any way to modify them to give a different pattern?
Modify the case, or some suitable shaped enclosure?
There are some digital recorders available with what looks,
though I haven't looked too closely, like two electret capsules
at right angles. If they are omnidirectional, they wouldn't give
much stereo effect....

Unable to access DRM protected Napster wma tracks. by
rbel
I have 60 plus wma tracks downloaded during 2009/2010 from Napster.
When I try to play any of them I get a message indicating that the DRM
information cannot be accessed. When Napster was acquired by Rhapsody
I backed up the DRM licence files via Windows Media Player.
Unfortunately MS have since amended Windows Media Player and it can no
longer access backup licence files and Napster/Rhapsody...

Windows 7 stream to multiple devices by
TonyL
......simultaneously and synchronously?
I use a wlan and WMP as a DNLA server to stream to a remote audio system in
the lounge. Works fine and I can have music in the lounge as well as music
from a second instance of WMP here in my office.
Question: Sometimes it would be handy to play the same stream in both
locations. Is there a simple, preferably free, way to do this?
I've done some...

Hi,
Just to let people know I've now written an initial webpage on how the user
can set up their Linux sound system. All being well, I'll add a couple of
more pages in due course to cover more of the topic. First page done, at

Internet radio - classical music, etc by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
Hi,
During the last week or so I finally changed over to broadband for my
connection. One of the things I have since started to explore is 'internet
radio'. However I haven't yet found much that is interesting. Wondering if
this is because I haven't yet looked in the right places, or if it isn't
present! :-)
My interest is in three areas of music.

Behringer Q502USB by
Mike Brown
Hi,
I have just acquired one of these little mixers and I must say that so
far I'm quite pleased with it. I have downloaded the ASIO driver from
their site and installed it into Win7pro but when I try to record into
Adobe Audition I get light clicking, either on record or playback or
both, which sounds to my ears like a clocking issue.
At present I'm just using the standard, on-board Realtek HD...

Hi,
if you put two similar (ferrite ring) speaker magnet assemblies down on a

against the other ?
Has anyone here really try it ??

Quad FM4 Battery by
chesterdavid
I had the classic FM4 problem with the station presets not retaining the station frequency when the unit was switched off. I obtained and fitted a new battery about a month ago and all worked well. However two days ago the presets were again lost.
Anyone any views if this could just be a duff battery or is there another potential cause. For background information the unit was switched off for...

Behringer USB C-1U microphone. by
Eiron[_3_]
Probably good for measuring the noise level of a motorcycle exhaust
or taping to the bell of a saxophone.
Has anyone else here tried one and got it to work on speech at a normal
level?
Even with the gain set to max, normal speech is at about -50dB,
only slightly higher than the noise floor.
And in typical Behringer fashion, the manual is crap.
I don't know if the volume control is purely...
