NAD T524 or NAD 521BEE or indeed something better ? by
FatHippy
My much used and loved NAD 522 player has given up the ghost and I am in
the market for a replacement for it.
While I initially thought I would just get a NAD 521BEE to replace it,
while I was looking around, I came across the NAD T524, which is
available for £169 and looks to be very good value for money. Obviously
the T524 is primarily intended to be a video source, but it seems to
have a...

Freebie or bin by
keef
Does anyone want a pair of Nad speakers - both bass speakers have blown
but otherwise fine - cosmetically good. They are around 4 feet - so
they are big and will need collection from North London. Thought I
would ask before they go to the recycling centre.

light green audio? by
Jim Lesurf
When I bought a DAB tuner (Pure 701ES) some months ago I discovered that it
was yet another of those modern items of consumer equipment that didn't
have an actual on/off mains switch. Instead, it goes into 'standby'.
I had encountered the same thing with the Nokia 221T DTTV tuner I bought a
few years ago.
In both cases I actually switch off overnight the entire systems in which
the tuners are...

Help Please by
keef
I have recently been given a pair of RAM speakers - does anyone know
what the initials stand for as I have struggled to find any information
on the net. I know they are good speakers but want to find out more
info.
I am thinking of using them as part of my home recording studio - any
thoughts on this as before I picked them up I was heading off to a pair
of Yamaha monitors
The second area of...

Rogers kit any good? by
Keith G
I'm being offered:
Roger A75 Panthera Amp
Rogers T75 Tuner
in a proposed swap - is this kit any good? If so, any idea of what it would
be worth, assuming fully serviceable and reasonably smart condition?
(I've no experience of it myself, but I have an inkling the tuner's fairly
well regarded??)

playing tennis and tunes at one time by
George M. Middius
Poopie B'ar wanders into the woods, but then he forgets why he went there in
the first place.
What puzzles me most about this idea is how you're going to be able to
concentrate on your tennis while listening to music !
Puzzlement is Poopie's natural condition. He gets puzzled at the notion of
having five or more speakers in the same system. He gets puzzled if the
phone rings before he can...

Poor Poopie ... sent to his room early again by
George M. Middius
The IKYABWAI donkey brayed:
I'll bet you flunked your religion classes in grade school.
I'll bet *you* flunked EVERYTHING !
Poopie, I have a question for you: When you clump to the mirror before
leaving your hovel, does the sight of your bedraggled visage send you into a
funky mood, so that you feel as if a noxious miasma from hell itself has
suffused your existence? I only ask because...

Mission Cyrus 2 high frequency 'whistling' problem by
[email protected]
I have a problem with my Mission Cyrus 2 amplifier, bought in the late
80s. Recently it's started producing a high-frequency whistle, which
has the same intensity independant of the position of the volume
control. Speakers are Mission 753s, but I've tried it 'in isolation'
from the rest of the system attached to small Denon speakers, no
inputs, and it still makes the whistle. On switching off the...

Arcam Alpha 5 CD - tray problem by
Milt
The CD tray mechanism on my Alpha 5 has stopped working. I tried to
eject a CD this morning and, out of the blue, the tray made a
stuttering noise and got stuck halfway through. It's now stopped
responding completely.
I know very little about hifi equipment, so I'm not able to spot the
source of the problem. I took the top cover off to take a peek inside
and I noticed that, when I push the Load...

Speakers off query... by
Keith G
I am using a rather smart little Denon SS amp 'pre only' to drive various
valve power amps - giving instant confirmation/reaffirmation of my
preference for valves every time I do it!
This entails using the amp's 'Pre Outs' and switching Speakers A and B
*both* off.
Could someone confirm that this, at least, *unlikely* to harm the amp when
used thus for long periods (all day long, when it's...

Measuring audio power ... by
Arfa Daily
Ok, so who knows a bit about measuring audio power ? Setting aside any
furious arguments about peak power, rms power, average power, backpeddling
average peak music power on any given friday in March etc, does an audio
power meter sum the power in both half cycles to arrive at a reading, or
just one.
I guess what I'm asking is half wave reccy ahead of the meter, or full wave
bridge ?

"Custom" production: fancy bicycles and the margins on Chinese amps by
Andre Jute
I've just had a couple of enlightening but also depressing experiences.
1. I accepted a design commission for a bike to be sold through an
expensive department store. Bikes are essentially frame designs fitted
up with off-the shelf mechanicals from only three manufacturers, wheels
and handlebars and saddles from not all that many more makers, and
various bits and bobs from not a huge choice of...

House clearance... by
Keith G
Nice chap and his wife have just left here after buying my valve tester.
He has just bought (yet another, apparently) Bakelite radio from a 'house
clearance' company near where he lives and this time it included a box of 15
valves which he almost said he didn't want, but his wife said take 'em
anyway...
Apart from anything else, there a 5 pcs. unused NOS PX4 in original boxes
and wrappers -...

Not all Aussies are abusive. by
APR
To all those Pommies (and the rest of the world) who have been the target of
abuse from a supposed Australian, I need to raise a few points.
1. We are not sure he is Australian!!
2. We believe his forefathers may have come from the British Isles.
3. You must understand that no sane person acts in this way.........
4. Don't get too high and mighty about Aussies in general, we do have the...

Audiolab 8000A circuit diagrams, etc. by
Jim Lesurf
A friend recently bought quite cheaply an old 8000A amp. He only wanted to
use the power amp sections, but one channel is now misbehaving. Hence he
has asked me if I can investigate and fix it. Since I am unfamiliar with
the circuit details, and know the design is held in high regard I am using
the chance to learn something about it. :-)
Alas, he has no documentation.
Does anyone have a copy...
