Recording studio on PC? by
Eiron[_3_]
Hi all,
Someone asked what's needed to do high quality vocal recording on a PC.
This would include listening to a click track or music while recording a
vocal.
And then listening to that vocal while recording another and keeping
them all in sync.
I suppose this is all standard stuff but I have no experience in this area.
I guess he needs:

Linn Majik-I by
Dave Plowman (News)
Been fixing one of these for a pal. He said it cost the thick end of 1000
quid new - and I wondered where the money was spent. Makes like Quad and
even Naim have chunky bespoke ally castings for the faceplate etc - the
Linn is simply pressed steel and plastic. Switches etc neither look or
feel good - and the display is poor. Not enough characters to make full
names. It works well enough - but...

naive hifi question on CD players by

I mostly listen to 320k mp3 files, as of this week with Beyerdynamic DT 250 headphones after many years of £20 or £30 'phones. I'm thinking of getting something better for just CDs and was looking at this

ROXtone - simple demo / tone generator by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
Hi,
This is just to let people know I've now put a simple 'tone generator'
program, called ROXtone, on my website at
http://www.audiomisc.co.uk/software/index.html
You can find it just under ROXScope, which it can be used in conjunction
with. (If your computer hardware co-operates!)

Hi-fi shelf by
D.M. Procida
If you get an IKEA chopping board:
http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/30087148/
and turn it upside-down and back-to-front, it makes a very nice wall
shelf for hi-fi equipment.
The lip makes it look very smart from the front (the little food-safe
branding on the side edge adds a touch of whimsy).

SSM2131P by

I'm trying out a circuit that uses an SSM2131P op-amp but these are now
difficult to get/expensive. Is there a modern equivalent?

Old Hi-Fi maintenance by
RJH[_2_]
I've come by an old (1979) Sony music centre, and I'm going to have a go
at cleaning it up. It seems to be electrically/mechanically fine.
Couple of issues:
I need some bulbs - they're 13A plug fuse shaped/sized, and described as
'lamp, pilot, 8.0V 30 mA'; and '8.0V 200mA'. Any ideas of a source? I'm
not going to spend a lot of money . . .
Certain parts - the cassette drawer, and the...

Old hifi II by
RJH[_2_]
My xmas avoidance strategy went well - doing up two old music centres
got me out of much of the fun and games :-)
Both about 30 years old, one Hitachi, one Sony, top of range. Both in a
right state cosmetically, but scrubbed up nicely, and now look 'in 'good
used' condition. Even the Sony with the missing transfers doesn't look
too bad, now I've removed the residue.
Electrically, no big...

Turntable on Kickstarter! by
D.M. Procida

Only for North Americans, sadly.
I wonder how good it is.
What would be nice is a decent DIY turntable kit. I designed and made a
pair of speakers once, which was fun. I'd love to make my own turntable.

Happy Xmas software by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
Decided to do something vaguely useful over Xmas, so have just put up some
new programs at
http://www.audiomisc.co.uk/software/index.html
IyoScope and ROXScope are to get the computer to act as a combined audio
oscilloscope and FFT analyser. Linux and RISC OS only, but source code
provided.
Happy Xmas,

Binaural Stereo by
Eiron[_3_]
Radio 4 Extra, 01:30 tonight
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b007jr11
It was on earlier as well, a half-hour play in binaural stereo.
I couldn't hear the 3D effect myself. I'll record it and try different
headphones.
And I don't know how well the effect is preserved through the format changes
if you download it from the BBC iPlayer.

Brennan advice please by
TonyL
Background:
I'm looking to clean up my audio/media/CD collection setup. I also need to
make it more wife friendly. Currently I use a Pioneer amp (recent monolithic
module based, not original) into IPL transmission line speakers and I route
various inputs through it via the built-in input selector. As a 'mature'
person my hearing is OK 'for my age' but if I'm honest with myself I find
that I...

Behringer UFO202 USB phono preamp review. by
Eiron[_3_]
I wanted to digitize some LPs but my decent phono preamp was lost in the
last house move.
The Behringer UFO202 phono preamp with USB looked worth trying for £25.
Using a USB wall-wart it can be used as a pre-amp with line out and
headphone socket.
I plugged it into a laptop USB port and used Nero to record albums.
The gain is fixed and it seems to be just 16 bit 44.1KHz.
Using a Shure M97xE, I...

Best headphones around £30-£45? by
D.M. Procida
Main use will be listening to music at home.
They need to be comfortable for extended periods when wearing glasses,
so ones that clamp like a vice to the head won't be suitable, and
lighter is better.
Sony MDR-ZX600 and Philips Downtown models look like the right kind of
thing, but it's difficult to judge.
Thanks,

O.T. Wiring problem by
David B
Hello,
Sorry for posting an off topic question but I know you all know your
electrics.
I'm trying to change some light switches for PIW switches so they come on
when my disabled brother walks into the room.
My problem is that the PIW switches require a live in, a live out and a
neutral and light switches in the UK only have a live in and a neutral.
Can I connect the live out to the neutral...

What is the best order to process audio by
Chaz Cotton
Hi
Is there a recommended order to process a digital audio signal using
Audacity or similar so that optimum results are obtained? Eg, is it
better to remove hiss, clicks, etc before Normalizing? I have a
number of old cassettes I need to copy to CDs and I want to get the
best results possible.
thanks

Tamdberg reel tape repairs, etc. by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
Can anyone suggest a UK company who do decent quality repairs (or supply
parts) on Tandberg recorders? I'm currently using my old 3041X to transfer
ancient recordings to digital and it is struggling! So far it has worked
amazingly well for such an old machine. If my luck holds I may be able to
transfer all the items I really want, but I suspect it may pine for fjords
before I finish all the old...
