Good Resolutions by Jim Lesurf
Just posting to let people know that a version of the article on the noise and distortion properties of LP and CD that appeared in the issue of HFN cover-dated April 2005 is now on my "Audio Misc" website. :-) FWIW There is also an 'extra' page dealing with some comments in letters about the article which have appeared in a later issue of HFN. The content of which make me suspect that the 'In a...

The Dung Camera evolves... by Keith G
I trust all here have seen the 'dung camera' on the telly which is used for filming elephants' kneecaps? Here is something quite like it: http://www.proelektra.de/ct_PR203121-k000001.htm A 'dung speaker' :-) Imagine that warbling away in yer garden - it'd have the neighbours

Cheap Valve Amps? by Fleetie
Yes, my YaQin is on the way out, and it seems it's not something as simple as a burnt out cathode resistor; nothing is conspicuous. Maybe it's just a bias trimmer thing. But basically I can't be arsed. So, I remember mr Garratt was larging up those "Dyanco" (?) cheap EL34 amps from Ebay. Is that seller still selling them? Going rate? Any other recommendations at the EXTREME GUTTER PAUPER end of...

Old Roberts radio question by Paul D.Smith
Anyone in the NG know abut old Roberts radios? I have a model R505 and I'm trying to find both a mains adapter and alternative to PP9s (which are almost impossible to get apart from the web these days). Anyone recommend a power supply which would work with this model? The "cheapie" that I have won't do LW/MW as the radio sounds like an angry wasp when on A/C. I suspect something like a poorly...

ITT MRP 20 turntable drive belt size? by Paul D.Smith
Before I get out the piece of string and tape measure, anyone know the size of the drive belt for an ITT MRP 20 turntable? Mine has been stored for sometime and is now seeing the light of day. The belt needs replacing and unfortunately I can't find a website which shows the size. Alternatively, anyone know the website for ITT? Cheers, Paul DS.

Availability of KSN1020A in/to UK? by [email protected]
I am trying to find a source for a piezo tweeter (I believe it may be made by motorola) KSN1020A or KSN1075A (6-50KHz, 50W) or equivalent in the UK or someone who will ship to UK. If equivalent, upper frequency response needs to be 40KhZ. Cheers, Dave

NAD 521i problems by FJ
Hi NG, My 4 year old NAD 521i CD-player is developing some problems. Every now and then (0 to 3 times per CD), it mutes the sound for a fraction of a second (0,2- 0,5 sec. approx). It never happens on the same spot, and it happens with both CD's and CD-R's. The position is random, sometimes early on the CD, sometimes later. When I re-wind to a "suspect" spot, I never can duplicate the...

Buying speakers vs. making speakers by sploo
Hi all, I'm after a 5.1 surround setup, and I've been looking at sets like the Acoustic Energy Aegis Evo 3 and Epos ELS3 5.1. Both are around the 1000GBP mark and both are highly rated by the Hi-Fi magazines (for films and music). I know I have the DIY skills to construct and finish MDF speaker cabinets, but know basically nothing about speaker theory.

Laptop batteries?? by Keith G
Bought a couple of laptops a few days back and have never yet seen better than 1h 15m battery life from either of them....?? It doesn't matter with one of them (and may not with the other) but I was told 'better than 2 hours' and the manual says 1h 40m (apparently - I haven't looked yet)....??? I know there are a number of laptop users here - what sort of *real* battery life do you...

Harry R for Mike G by Iain M Churches
It's Harry Roy this time - one of the most famous bandleaders of the 1930's. I don't know a great deal about him, except that his real name was Lipton and that he worked closely with his brother Syd Roy who later had his own band. There was also a bandleader called Syd Lipton.I am not sure if this is

Volume control at the speaker? by Arny Krueger
"DaveC" wrote in message In a distributed audio system in a residence, how can volume control in each room be accomplished. (1) Separate amp at each location, not totally impractical in these days when you can get a pertty fair 100 wpc amp for under $80 if you look around.

Microphones. by Eiron
Any advice on mounting a microphone capsule as a desk mike to minimise rear sound pickup? I was thinking of fixing it to a plate and surrounding it with a felt annulus. Or is an omnidirectional electret capsule not a good place to start? -- Eiron

Search for Ye Olde Semiconductors by Jim Lesurf
One of my aging power amps is showing an intermittent fault. Investigations make it look like it needs one of the semiconductor devices replacing. However since the amp is 20+ years old, most of the devices are obsolete. I can find what it probably a suitable 'replacement' from Farnell, but I'd like if I can to find some NOS of the original type. The experience is also making me realise that it...
