WMA DRM and MP3 questions by
Malcolm H
I have downloaded (and paid for) music tracks from the MSN music store .The
downloaded tracks are in .wma format protected by DRM (Digital Rights
Management).
My media player (Squeezebox http://www.slimdevices.com/) will not play these
files - so I wish to convert them to unprotected mp3.
Using Windows Media player I have successfully burned the downloaded .wma
files to a CD and then ripped...

Mechanical noise from a new Rotel RCD1072 by
Paul
I bought an ex-demo model of this CD player from a reputable dealer a couple
of week back. Apart from having to sacrifice an optical out for my minidisc
recorder, I've been very pleased with the sound apart from one serious
flaw - a large number of discs are mechanically noisy where they are
virtually silent when played on an ancient Pioneer PD-8500 the Rotel
replaces.
Is the Rotel or...

Resonant circuit in Radford xovers by
sbring
In a schematic for Radford's FN12 crossover, used in all the Radford
models S360, SIO360, S270, M180 and T90, there is a resonant circuit in
the midrange section, an in series LC circuit with a .47 microF cap and
a coil named T2173. I suppose this is meant to dampen some kind of
resonance in the mid drivers, but WHICH driver is it supposed to be
used with?
You can look at C4/L3 in the schematic...

Newbie question, mp3 quality by
David Jones
Hi All, and thanks for any help for this newbie.
My new flat mate has a good quality stereo (~300 GBP amp, 450 GBP
speakers). I tried plugging my laptop in, and compared the one album we
both had (his on CD, mine in mp3 format). The difference was amazing,
with the CD sounding so much better I thought about getting rid of my
whole collection.
I did wonder if it may be the sound card...

Adding a base port by
Mark R Penn
Stupid speaker question time:
I have a pair of (roughly) 18 year old Maudant Short MS20's, which sound
reasonably good, but lack a little base. I'm tarting up the cabinets (just
new veneer and grille cloth), and wondered about the feasibility of adding a
base port at the same time? The woodwork involved would be no issue, and I
can buy the actual flared ports easily enough, but I don't know...

Subwoofer hookup by
Mark R Penn
I think I've worked out how to hook up my existing subwoofer to my amp, but
I'd be grateful if someone in the know could tell me if I've got this right.
The sub was part of a home theatre system, so doesn't have instructions for
connecting it to anything different.
I have:
- An active mono subwoofer with a single RCA input.
- A stereo integrated amp with (currently linked) pre-amp out and...

Bailey t-line driver & xover recommendations by
sbring
Among speaker projects I am thinking about, now that I am reitred, is a
1972 Bailey t-line system. The cabinet seems no big problem; Bailey has
all the necessary measurements in his article. Driver choices and
passive three-way crossover deisgn seem much more difficult. My budget
is not impressive, so I would like to build the crossovers myself, but
I don't know enough to design them. Any...

Radford crossover problems by
sbring
Some 25 years ago I built a couple of Radford Monitor 180 with drivers
left over from a pair of Radford Studio 360, where one of the speakers
was burned out. I remember there was some difficulty with the
crossovers. For impedance reasons, I could not use the same ones as in
the Studio 360. However, I never got neither hardware nor schematics
from Radford, so I ended up building my own, with next...

Even sillier.... by
Keith G
Where the hell is all going to end?
Look at what this went for:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.co.uk%3A80%2F5827770404_W0QQfromZR40QQfviZ1&item=5827770404&rd=1
OK, it'll have a hundred quid shipping to go on it (they are waking up to
the 'postage premium' scams) but even then it's *loopy* value for the price.
The chassis, knobs and trannie covers...

What Amazon doesn't want you to know. by
Margaret Shiels
Gentle uk.rec.audio reader,
First, my apology for cross-posting to this NG. Be assured that this is
a one-off. It will never happen again.
My sole purpose is to draw your attention to what I believe are dubious
practices by Amazon.co.uk. I also believe that at stake here is freedom
of expression.

Amplifier inputs - are there any differences? by
[email protected]
I have on the back of my amp typical standard RCA input connections
such as Aux, Tape, CD, Phono, etc.
I also have a PC computer, and I like listening to MP3s which I listen
to by using a lead going from my PC soundcard going into the back of
the amp - it's currently plugged in to the Aux connection.
But does it make any difference if I plug the PC lead in to any of the
other amp connections,...

Monitor Audio speaker value. by

I have a pair of Monitor Audio MA2 speakers, possibly 20+ years old, which I

Are they worth anything?
