Car radio - ipod by Michael Chare
I see that I can now buy an adapter for my VW car radio which lets me attach an ipod to the CD connectors. The radio is then able to select and play music on the ipod as if it were a CD player. I am note sure whether the ipod can be left on all the time, or whether you have to separately switch it on each time that you want to use it. This makes me think that what I would like is a little box...

Larrge or Small ? by In Dreams I Walk With You
Hi, I have a question regarding setting "Large" or "Small" for speakers within a surround setup. My setup : Front/Center : Quadral Ascent 450 (115W RMS, 35-24000Hz, 4-8Ohm) Surround : Quadral Phase Zero (40W RMS, 65-22000Hz, 4Ohm) Sub : Elac Base 373 (crossover freq 40-180Hz) What would be the best settings for front, center and surround speakers ?

Digging into the Stax of my music by Andre Jute
Amazing how a new piece of equipment opens up your music again. See my other post "What would you give up last?" about what I concluded when I considered downsizing my hi-fi. About the same time as I was concluding that I would keep my electrostats above all other speakers, and suitable amps to drive them would have to be Quad, ditto CD player, I read Don Pearce writing on UKRA about his...

Hi, I would like to get some infos on this power amp. I didn't understand well if it's a tube or solidstate amp? How many watts has? It's enough for a medium room with 89db floorstanding speaker? thank you

Not SACD by Eiron
So I finally got a universal player and was looking forward to an afternoon of Miles Davis in surround sound. All of the discs are marked 'SACD' and one even has '360 Sound' on the label. It turns out that none of them are dual-layer. They are all just CDs. The buggers at Columbia Legacy (Sony Music) used the same artwork for the CDs and SACDs. I guess I'll have to nip down to Tesco and buy a...

Opinions? Bit of a compromise... by NickD
Hi all, Bit of a noob here, just after some feedback. I currently have a NAD setup - C320BEE amp, C521BEE CD player, C422 tuner and Kef Q1 bookshelf speakers. It's a good setup, but space is becoming an issue, and I'm considering an Arcam Solo to replace the separates, retaining the same speakers. I'm aware that the Solo will probably be a compromise and not sound as good as the separates, but...

REQ: Help with this track / artist by Steve
Please could someone give me any information on a song that used to be played on The Late Lounge (JazzFM - UK) I stumbled upon the Late Lounge some 7 mths after it first started when Clare Anderson was presenting it, so that gives you some idea how long ago this was (2001 - 2002) but I never heard her anounce it. Contacted JazzFM (before they became SmoothFM) but even they couldn't tell...

The cock crows three times for Arny Krueger, liar, hypocrite and bible basher by Andre Jute
Karl Uppiano wrote: Is someone ticked off because real science refutes marketing BS? Other way round. We're disgusted with Arny Krueger for making up BS out of personal malice and then refusing to prove his statements. The motive for Krueger's malice to me is that I have before proven that he doesn't honour the scientific method -- indeed that Krueger proceeds from wishful thinking like some...

Denon micro system speaker upgrade by Baloney
I'm quite disappointed with my Denon DM33 microsystems standard speakers. Lovely and crisp, but NO bass at all. Well not much. My question is: Is it worth while upgrading the speakers? Richer sounds have some Kef floorstanders for only £89 and Mordaunt Shorts for £150 (Can't remember models, but can find out if it's useful). Don't want too much bass, just a more balanced sound.

Stereophile drops the NAD by George M. Middius
The Krooborg grits its dental appendages in envy. How crazy is a $2.7K integrated stereo amp? Probably, about 10 times less crazy than a $26K CD player, or $46-$70k speakers. Arnii, you don't have to remind us of your penury, your bitterness, and your soul-suffocating class envy. We'll never forget as long the earth keeps spinning. Among humans, the usual antidote to the unquenched...

BBC DAB Tx problem ? by alexander.keys1
Since Saturday 9th December there has been a weak signal on BBC national services on DAB, where I live near the centre of Leicester. Local services have not been affected. Also, they went off altogether for a bit on Saturday. I've tried calling BBC Reception Advice, but they say they don't know of any transmitter problems. According to the display on my set, it seems to be the 'Digital...

Recommendations: shielded speakers under 100 by Matthew McGrattan
HI, My 'kitchen' hi-fi currently has a set of JPW Gold Monitors bought from Richersounds years ago. I could do with replacing them -- one of the woofers is all dented looking from someone poking them with a curious finger -- and it would be nice if I could replace them with a shielded set so I can site them a little closer to my computer. I have a budget under £100.

USB turntable by Malcolm Stewart
On the search for Xmas presents in one of our better known department stores, I came across a device described as a "USB Turntable" for making one's own CDs & MP3s. As it was available to touch, I tried rotating the turntable, and couldn't believe just how light it was - they must be air-freighted here from the far east! Price was around £120. Just hope it performs better than I fear - my...
