Vinyl Dilemma by
Triffid
OK, got myself a new vinyl version of the 30th anniversary 'Dark Side'.
Question is: Do I open it? I know what it sounds like from the CD (not
/too/ much effort gone into the stereo remaster :) so would the panel
save it and ebay it some time in the future, or play it to get the full
vinyl experience?

comprising the Beogram 1700 record deck with cartridge, Beomaster 2200
tuner amp, Beocord 2400 cassette deck, a pair of B and O 24 speakers on

Speaker recommendation by
[email protected]
Hello. Sorry I am a complete audio newbie in need of help.
I want to find a pair of wall-mounted (not "in-wall") speakers that I
can put in the living room and the kitchen.
In the living room, the speakers will be used for music listening and
perhaps for home cinema. The listener will be sitting down.
In the kitchen, the music will just be background as I prepare the
dinner.

Newbie Questions by
Music-Al
Hi All
having had the cassette player of my cheap Aiwa mini system fail on me
I have now decided to upgrade to "proper" hi-fi.
I am completely new to this stuff so don't really know what to look
for. I went to my local Richer Sounds but they do not have a listening
room any more and the salesman I spoke to basically just pointed out
what was on their in store catalogue without offering any...

I have tried to post twice to Keith's

Maybe the word Lowther travels

Recording radio from/on PC by
[email protected]
Forgive my technical ignorance, which will probably be very evident. I
am a teacher and would like to record internet radio programmes on to
my hard disk and/or then on to CD. Can anyone please explain -
relatively simply - how I can do this?
If I should give any further information, please do ask me!
Direct email replies would be especially welcome...
With thanks and best wishes
Paul

Record cleaning? by
[email protected]
I bought a rare set of LPs from Ebay. Visually they are pretty good,
but smell strongly of mould and are unplayable. (AFter trying them out
I had to give my stylus a good clean before playing anything else.)
Is it likely that cleaning with a Moth or similar machine would restore
them to something I could enjoy? And does anyone know if this service
is available in or near Exeter?
Thanks for...

Taming ferocious treble by
Glenn Richards
I have a slight problem on my second (or eve third) system, located in
the computer room...
System consists of Technics SU-VX500 amp and Eltax Symphony 6 speakers.
The treble from the Eltax speakers is, to say the least, rather forward.
As the primary source for this is the PC (USB soundcard, SPDIF running
into Arcam Black Box 50) I've tamed this for now by rolling off the
treble using...

Shanling ... by
Arfa Daily
Got a Shanling SP-80 on the bench. Anyone got any experience of them ? Looks
very pretty with it's pair of EL34s glowing away, and all the chrome and
gold work ...
It was howling like an air raid siren initially, and I also noticed no
display. Howl prob was due to bad PG2311A vol control IC, short from its +5v
pin to the gnd pins. Replaced IC and 5v rail restored and amp now quiet (
but has...

The Audo Critic by
andy
Perhaps I have failed in my search but there seems to be no contact
information or table of contents for this "webzine" (since 15 Feb
2005). Has anybody here taken the plunge and subscribed?
The reason I ask is that from the scant information provided it appears
to provide old fashioned objective reviews. Is this true?

Delurk with question about Arcam CD72 by
jermec
Evening all.
Just had a strange experience with my set-up and I was hoping someone would
have some advice.
I have an Arcam CD72 running through a NAD 302 amp and KEF 35.2 speakers. I
put in a new CD this afternoon (the CD plays fine in other players) and
heard nothing but a muffled mush. Tried another CD and got the same. Put the
first one back and everything plays in crystal clear...

The Highest Ackle Aid..?? by
Keith G
A week or so ago, when Phil N was over to hear my Buschhorns
http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/buschhorns/buschorns.htm
my neighbour came to the door for some reason, so I pulled him in for a
quick listen. (He had been curious when I was building them in my garage.)
He obviously liked them and said he particularly liked the clarity - he's
deaf in one ear and needs all the clarity he can get....

Mains conditioners and power cables by
deja
I've been reading up on the subject of main cables, conditioners
etc...I'm rather sceptical of the improvement such expensive things
will add to the sound of my hifi but have a couple of questions if
anyone would care to enlighten me
- are mains conditioner blocks supposed to be used with the basic mains
leads supplied with everyday hifi, or with the custom powerkord type
leads? eg take Russ...

Winamp plugin by
Rich Wilson
What do you guys think of this...
http://rapidshare.de/files/5032634/dsp_enhancer.dll.html
It's a Winamp DSP plugin, designed to improve the sound out of small
computer speakers. The general idea is to remove some of the midrange so you
can turn the volume up and get better response at the frequency extremes. I
never quite got round to tidying it up, writing instructions or thinking of
a...
