Home Cinema help by
TBL
I've currently got a Technics SC-DV170
(http://www.lasyl.co.uk/SCDV170.htm) which is a combined 5 disc DVD
player, tuner, Dolby Digital AMP, and tape player.
It doesn't have any optical inputs, which I would like to use for my
XBOX and Sky+.
My query is, what am I best buying:
1) A new system like the lovely Panasonic SCDT310e

Q: How long can I run a digital line? by
Jay
hello.
I'd like to run a digital out from my DVD player to a DAC. How long can
this cable be? I can use a coaxial or an optical. I was hoping it could run
six metres.
Is this way out or is this possible?
Thanks

Crackly areas of sound in video... by
Tom
....Hello folks
Creating video means dealing with the sound that comes with them and during
my video editing process I usually export the audio and normalise it/apply
compression (dynamic processing in CEP2) filters.
Some loud audio, however, yields a cackling noise. Even when it's
normalised, these louder parts of the track retain the crackle.
I'm guessing it was captured/recorded as such as...

Spectacular Bookshelf Speakers by
Old Fart at Play
Anyone know why a bookshelf speaker needs a rear-facing driver?
If you have any old LS3/5a's lying around, they make
excellent centre or rear speakers in an HT setup.

Subject: Technics SH-400, Any value? by
Brian Jones
If this has appeared twice apologies, my reader tells me it posted AOK
yesterday but I can see no trace of it in any group yet.
I have just acquired a Technics SH-400 CD-4 demodulator. I'm currently
using it as a simple stereo phono preamp.
Is there still any marketplace for this unit? Any idea of value? It seems
pretty revered in it's day.
I don't have any CD-4 setup so can't test...

SONY HAR-LH500 by
RD3000
I recently purchased the HAR-LH500 and installed the M-Crew software
onto my laptop (HP Omnibook 900, Win2K. A wireless peer to my desktop)
but.........
If I run the s/w (Ver 2.6E) without the LH500 connected I get informed
of the siuation. When I run the s/w with the LH500 connected by USB,
I get a message to the effect 'Fatal Error - switch off (not to sure
on the message). After this, if I...

Op Amps? by
Old Fart at Play
Anyone know what's the flavour of the month
for op amps?
It's just for some buffers and equalizers to
go before a power amp so tbh, a 741 would
probably be as good as is required but
there's nothing wrong with being trendy. :-)

Amp and speakers for a PC by
anthony james
I'm going to use a PC as the video and audio source in the kitchen.
What are peoples thoughts on a good amplifier/speaker solution?
The simplist thing would be to buy a PC speaker set but even the
'expensive' ones look too cheap to be any good - is there anything
i've missed? Otherwise I've got a sony stereo amp i could hide away
with the PC and drive from the PC's volume control (or get a...

My equipment review of the Bose 901 by
Peter Sammon
http://www.epinions.com/content_105506836100
In 1968, I took an old Philco record player and turned it into my first
hifi record player by installing a Shure M3D stereo magnetic phono
cartridge and then adding a preamp and low powered amp and sealing the
entire deal by building these gigantic enclosures for a pair of Jensen duo
cone 8" speakers that cost a grand total of $20/Pr. This was my...

re uk.rec.audio down the pan by
eddie
Don't know if this is true but to save somebody some hassle it could be
worth reading the following (found on another ng).
The uk and alt groups have been getting a post saying insert name of group
here "going down the pan" . If it appears here (or on any other groups you
guys frequent) then if you respond, it is set to send the response to
alt.peace. Someone has targeted that group like...

Repairs to Cambridge Audio D300 CD player ? by
Andy Dingley
My D300 is now unusable, after an a couple of years of getting
uncreasingly fussy. The transport motor spins but has inadequate
torque to get up to speed. Looking at the abyssmal build quality
inside, I'm amazed it lasted as long as it did.
So, what's to do with this thing ? I've always hated it, slightly
influenced by the poor service I had from Richer Sounds (Bristol) when
I bought the...

Q: Any old transport + nice used DAC OK? by
Jay
Ok,
I have a DVD player which was one of the cheapest ones around when I bought
it (mid 2001 - it's a Yelo DVD800).
If I buy a 2nd-hand DAC, is that going to give me a good sound, as opposed
to buying a CD player for the same money as the DAC? I'm talking low budget
here?
Cheers,

Hello,
I've been lurking in uk.rec.audio for many weeks now and thought it time to
speak up.
Though speaking up is not going to be easy with all the small minded, ego
maniacal, loud mouthed losers that there are in this group. You know and we
all know who you are.

Difference between data CD and audio CD formats by
Andrew Black (detele obvious bit)
Hi
I wonder if someone can give me (or point to) a simple explanation as to
the difference between data CD and audio CD formats.
A friend of mine was trying to produce an audio CD and (I think) produced a
data CD. They thought it is all data, so formats must be the same.
I want much technical detail, just something clear (and authorative) enough
to indicate there is a difference.
As an...
