Question for Witless Wiecky by George M. Middius
This is a very simple one, Wiecky. It's a True/False question. You won't even have to adjust your rectal stick. Just let the answer pop out of your fingertips and dive straight into cyberspace. True or False: Audio is a deadly serious business.

Running SlimServer on a Hifidelio (Olive Musica) by Simon Heather
Instructions for running SlimServer on a Hifidelio wireless music server (same for Olive Musica/Symphony) so that you can connect a Squeezebox: Download the latest Linux build to your PC. Transfer the SlimServer_xxx.tar.gz file to the Import directory on the Hifidelio. Enable telnet on the Hifidelio. Disable UPnP (this clashes with port 9000) and reboot the Hifidelio. Telnet on to the...

Newbie's first seperates system by Alex Butcher
Hi - After years of putting up with a gradually-dying twelve year old Aiwa midi system, I'm thinking about picking up my first basic seperates system. I've been reading around, and I plan to buy from Richer, because most of the HiFi shops in Bristol tend to start rather significantly further up the foodchain. I've also looked in a second-hand shop, but the only thing that stood out as a possible...

WHY STEWART PINKERTON IS UNRELIABLE: 1. BACKGROUND by Andre Jute
WHY STEWART PINKERTON IS UNRELIABLE 1. BACKGROUND Stewart Pinkerton, an employee in the postroom of a bank, claims to be a qualified engineer. He waves his certificate to excuse his constant and insistent destructive invasions of other people's hobbies or professions on the pretext of protecting them against their own ignorance. As a result Pinkerton is banned from several professional,...

Subwoofer amps by Glenn Booth
Evening all, Having spent the best part of a year sulking 'cos wifey won't let me build an IB subwoofer, I've decided to build one in a box (Keith, seeing all that sawdust in your garage has driven me to it!). Does anyone know of any sane, reliable plate amps that are readily available in the UK? I'm looking for about 250 'sensible' watts, to drive a single Adire Tempest 15 in a (relatively)...

Newbie amp question by roondog
I have a fairly old amp its about 30 years iirc older than me. It only has one aux port which is taken up by my cd player. I also have a minidisc player that to use I have to switch the cable over. I am now looking to connect my xbox 360 to it. Is there something I can buy that will allow me to have allthree plugged in so I don't have to constantly switch cables about?

Bristol show - some impressions by Paul B
Just been to the 1st Hi Fi show in over 12yrs. Went with my GF, a friend & met up with another couple. It was actually good fun & I managed to leave my cynical persona behind. The high point was listening to (& watching a DVD through an Arcam) of Steely Dan through Leema Acoustics Xen's, albeit with their subs & in surround. Was in there for over 30mins - long for me. The only real...

Hey, Useless Wiecky, where is your apology for being a know-nothing and an abusive bully? by Andre Jute
Hey, Useless Wiecky, where is your apology for being a know-nothing and an abusive bully? Peter Wieck, who posts as and is also known on RAT and elsewhere as Useless Wiecky, grossly abused several posters for correctly saying an Akai M-8 is single-ended. Useless Wiecky claimed ignorantly that it is push-pull. You can start following Useless Wiecky's nastiness...

mp3 juke box systems by Matt
Hello all, I've been looking at the Hitachi AM-X140/135 (from Dixons/Currys) because it has an interesting feature of a hard drive which can be used to play/store mp3's etc. What I was wondering is if anyone is aware of any simlar products because the Hitachi box hasn't been greatly received. I am aware of a Cambridge Audio 640H (but is a bit pricy at £500), but can't find anything else similar.

Stereo Amplifier Power Specifications by Bill Evans
Back in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s when I was purchasing quality stereo amplification equipment for various projects, I became quite familiar with the techniques used by manufacturers to overstate the power output of their amplifiers – specifically statements presenting total instantaneous power, peak power, or other such number-inflating techniques. I had thought that the practice of...
