iPlayer upgrade by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
Warning!
The BBC iPlayer 'listen again' is telling me this morning that I have to
'upgrade' my version of Flash - and won't let me listen until I do. In my
case that may also mean upgrading my Linux distro. And in turn having to
redo a lot of tests and tweaks. So a fair bit of fiddling about.
The 'live' stream was working OK this morning. So at present I have my
fingers crossed that I can use...

Gargling prom again by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
Anyone else get 'gargling' at the moment on the Proms being repeated via
the iPlayer 320k stream?
I'm getting this again. A concern as it is a repeat of a prom from a few
days ago that showed the same problem when live. The problem apparently
only affects a minority, but - worryingly - seems to be getting more
common.
I get it with both the 320k and 'normal' iPlayer streams for R3. But...

Sad News by
Iain Churches[_2_]
I am very sad to tell you that Keith G,
one of the most prolific, and interesting
contributors to this NG, died earlier today,
after a difficult illness. He was 64.

Linux or Windows utility to report RMS values in *.WAV files? by

Is there such a thing?

You may know..... by

but Hi-Fi Choice magazine is on it's last legs and may
soon kick the bucket:

Also this, it's claimed to be a "merger", but plenty of cynics

seemingly the new merged company will only have the frog

Class D amplifiers by
Eiron[_3_]
A couple of years ago someone mentioned a really cheap class D amplifier.
Anything still available these days?
I just need something for the kids' TV room.

Proms, 320k, and the sound of music by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
I've recently been enjoying two sources of music in particular. One is the
Proms using the 320k stream. The other is some new (to me) Jazz CDs. This
prompts me to raise various points to see what people think.
Firstly, I am now of the opinion that the best way to get Proms is via the
320k stream. To me this delivers better results in general than any
traditional broadcasting route I've used....

Gargling contest prom? by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
Hi,
Did anyone else have problems with the first half of last night's Prom
giving 'gargling' noises during the first half? This via both the 320k and
192k streams from the iPlayer.

Jim

Quad service by
Miguel
Hello,
Do folks have any recent experience of Quad (Huntingdon) service since
they became IAG? I will phone them about my Quad 44 which could use a
"tune-up" after 22 years or so. They do not answer emails to the
address given on their web site. Amazingly my ESL 63s of similar
vintage still seem very good (but of course my ears are that much
older too!) Anyway, no audible distortion and thay...

Arcam rDAC timing by

Hi,
Just to let people know that I've just put up a new webpage showing the
results of measurements on the replay timing regularity of the Arcam rDAC
when using its USB input. This can be found at

A good 'record' shop? by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
I tend to buy my 'classical' CDs from a dealer who is a specialist and is
someone I can discuss purchases with via email. I've tended to buy other
types of music from the usual kind of 'website warehouse'. However I'd be
interested to hear any recommendations/suggestions of specialist dealers
for rock/pop/jazz who can supply the more unusual or 'audiophile' items.
