CD Player versus Speakers, importance in a system. by Derrick Fawsitt
Having just got a new pair of Quad 989 ESL speakers due to listening to so many people say the room and the speakers are the two most important factors in good Hi Fi, what do I say to a friend of mine who has just added a Naim CDS 3 player to his Naim equipment and swears by the difference it has made. In conclusion, two questions, first of all the importance, (or otherwise) of the Player in...

Philips FM Wireless Speakers/Headphones by [email protected]
I've had 2 sets of these for a while; one transmitter came with wireless headphones, the other came with a wireless speaker, and I combined the sources and receivers however I needed. Overall, a reasonable solution for a mass-market price. However - I've recently noticed a low background hum, obvious when the source is quiet; initially I thought it was a fault with one transmitter, but I've...

trivial cassette question by b
looked at a recently made (last 2 or 3 years i suppose) tdk d90 audio cassette the other day and noticed there was no metal plate behind the pressure pad - seems this omission is widespread these days- why has it disappeared and what was its original function? something to do with stray magnetic fields?? regards, b.

Aerial update for Tony by Keith G
No idea where the original posts are, so a new thread. The Aerial guy has just left and I've now got a 4 element aerial (no extra charge) and *crystal clear* stereo reception (R1-4/Classic FM - I don't care about the rest). He tells me (showed me) my signal is 50 dB baseline, peaking at 52 dB and was using a Televes spectrum analiser...??? Nice bloke, seemed to know his stuff and was...

DBT in audio - a protocol by Don Pearce
OK, I've had a bit of a think - and I've written a protocol, which I believe would be a basis of fair testing of audio components to resolve such issues as cable sound etc. I invite all here to read what I suggest, and let me know if I have either missed something, or am being unfair on one direction or another. http://www.donepearce.plus.com/odds/dbt/

SETs and the sound of real musicians playing by Andre Jute
You're entitled to your opinion, Iveson. We are entitled to say your opinion sounds like ****. Always. The key word in the analogy is "always". A SET which always sounded the same would be a performer and therefore wrongly conceived, executed or applied. What SET does for the oldtimers, who design SET amps and build them and listen to them and *compare their sound to what they hear in...

Uh oh, I'm getting the horn again! by Keith G
I've got a nice little pair of Fostex drivers (FE103Es) kicking about loose and the itch to build another pair of 'back loaded' horns with them. (When this cold snap has passed... :-) Possibly/maybe the Fostex enclosu http://www.fostexinternational.com/docs/speaker_comp/pdf/recom_enclose/103e_encl.pdf A simple 'straight-sided' build that I want to hear for myself and to 'get my eye in...

Sunday Bloody Sunday! by Keith G
I bloody hate 'machine noise' on weekends (Sundays in particular) and leading by example, have managed to influence the natives in respect of this since we moved here a few years back. (Retired old farts mowing their lawns on sunny Sunday afternoons do get me cross, when they've got all week to do it...) So here I am hoist with my own wotsit - I've got a pair of far king great Jericho Horns...

Pride and Prejudice.... by Keith G
I thought long and hard about posting this as I'm not interesting in punting an angle here but this really did make me smile. I had loaned my Bez 300B cheepy Chinky amp to a nearby friend to try for the last few days and I got a call from him to go hear it on his kit yesterday - specifically on the Tannoy Cheviots he has recently bought. (I've already had an enthusiastic call from him about...

Joining Mini system to hi-fi speakers. by Richard Blackwood
I'm on a budget but would like a cd player with mp3 capability, a powerful amplifier (100 watts or more) and a radio tuner. Cassette deck is not important but might be useful. Having 1 remote to do everything is a plus. I do not have a lot of space either so... What about buying a mini system (Panasonic, Sony etc) for around £150 and putting some better speakers (£150 worth - mission, bowers...
