FA: Gold Lion KT77 valves / tubes QUAD SET - The rarest EL34 guitar amp power tube by ndrtech2
Hi For those who are interested I've put a quad set of Gold Lion KT77s on eBay. Pulled them from a Burman guitar amp many years ago so I could switch to EL34s as I had plenty of spares. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7396690284&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&rd=1 Cheers ndrtech2.

Recycling Wharfedale drive units by Jo
I'm in the process of retiring my Wharfedale speakers of 1970 vintage and was wondering about demoting them to a pair of super PC speakers. One of the bass drivers is shot and so the other may not be far behind. My idea is to put the mid range and treble units into smaller enclosures that would fit on my desk and to build a reasonable enclosure for the remaining bass unit (or a replacement)...

WHY STEWART PINKERTON IS UNRELIABLE: 4. PINKERTON LIES ON PROFESSIONAL MATTERS FOR PERSONAL REASONS by Andre Jute
WHY STEWART PINKERTON IS UNRELIABLE 4. PINKERTON LIES ON PROFESSIONAL MATTERS FOR PERSONAL REASONS Pinkerton doesn't like me; he is clearly a bully and I make a point of leaving hairy footprints on bullies when they are foolish enough to throw themselves against my ankles. Besides the KISS tube project, I also published the miniGainBrick, a solid state amp, a schematic and two articles. About...

Pandora / Last.fm by Adrian C
Couple of interesting audio sources when u.r.a is taking a break from arguing the toss about the merits of different types of conductive string.... I shouldn't really be mentioning this cool stuff in a UK group because those pandora guys in the US aren't ready to serve us yet (streaming copyright issues claimed). But their website player is accessible for a quick demo....

Lead free solder by Mike Gilmour
Regulations and more regulations, it must be difficult for manufacturers to keep up with it all. The WEEE Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment and the RoHS Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directives that were published by the European Commission in 2003, are due for implementation by July this year. Amongst a legion of other directives, lead free solder can only be good thing...

Question for Witless Wiecky by George M. Middius
This is a very simple one, Wiecky. It's a True/False question. You won't even have to adjust your rectal stick. Just let the answer pop out of your fingertips and dive straight into cyberspace. True or False: Audio is a deadly serious business.

Boxing the compass.... by Keith G
Last night we* learnt a few things.... We learned that, if you are stranded in a desert and your GPS gadget is on the fritz, you can determine Due North by pointing the hour hand of your watch at the Sun and that bisecting the angle between it and the 12 o'clock mark will point you Due South**. (Due North is 180 deg the other way....) Make the necessary allowances for BST &c.,...

Do amplifiers sound different?uad by Andre Jute
I've moved this from the thread "Newbie question on amplifers (sorry!)" which at present centres on the different matter of the double standards of the "engineers" who claim all amps sound the same (when appropriately applied) or should sound the same, but who every now and again tell us how this amp or that sounds "better". I don't see much joy in discussing their hypocrisy with a bunch of...

SET in my ways... by Keith G
Here's an interesting and well-written article that should have the AntiSEpTics foaming at one or more of their body orifices: http://www.stereophile.com/tubepoweramps/196wavelength/ This bit is particularly interesting: "Then there's the interesting issue of distortion products. SETs include even- and odd-order distortion products in their outputs (as in nature, so to speak), while...

Why do SACDs sound better? (Soft troll) by Keith G
Given that my own preferences are for vinyl and that I think all 'digital' music is crap compared with it, I am, nevertheless, interested to know why exactly is it that SACDs (stereo) sound so much better than the equivalent CDs? Anyone who says they don't is lying (if only to themselves) - sticks out like a chapel hatpeg....

WTB: Distortion meter by Nick Gorham
I know this may prompt cry's of "but you like SET's why do you want one of those", but I don't suppose anyone here in the UK has a unwanted HP 334 or such like that they would consider exchanging for a sensible sum of money? I have been watching on ebay for some time, but can't talk myself into paying the shipping from the states where they all seem to be. -- Nick
