Stewart Pinkerton's negative contribution by
Andre Jute
Yo, Pinkerton:
Since October 2004 you sent 4607 message to RAT, which is
rec.audio.tubes. You don't have a tube amp. Your expressed attitude to
tubes is that you hate them. Your total contribution after 4607
messages to a tube conference is generally agreed to be zero, in fact
negative. Most consider that you did this vile thing maliciously and
pettily.
If each of those messages took you only...

Maggies "now available in Europe"? by
Glenn Booth
Evening all,
I just seen at http://www.magnepan.com/the_offer.php
that some Magnepan kit is now "Available in Europe".
Anyone know what kit, and where? I'm keen on getting
a listen, and fed up trying to find a good pair of ESL 63s
without driving 150 miles.
Ta,

Mains filters by
Glenn Richards
Just a quick straw poll...
What are people's opinions of mains filters, upgraded power cables etc?
Have been doing some investigation and there may actually be something
in this. Not talking Russ Andrews style £250 mains cables here, more
like sticking a plug with a filter onto a standard IEC lead, and
possibly using one of those Masterplug RFI filtered 4-way blocks.
Has anyone done any...

AKAI GX-W45 spring for tape tray by
Willem Hansel
Hi,
I own a AKAI GX-W cassette deck. I had to replace the front panel. Therefore
I had to demount the cover where the cassette is loaded. Its construction
makes use of a spring to open the cassette tray. Finally I have detached the
tray and the spring jumped out. Now I have some individual parts and don't
know how to build it together again. I don't even know where the spring for
the opening...

Equalisation for PC mic input/line input by
David Peters (UK)
QUESTION:
Do the PC mic and line inputs use the same equalisation (on the
frequency spectrum)?
BACKGROUND:
I have some noisy voice tapes from an old analogue dictation machine.
I'm reading the recordings from the "ear" socket of my dictation
machine into my PC and then coverting the recordings to MP3.

The extraordinary insensitivity of "audiophiles" on UKRA, RAT and RAO by
Andre Jute
uk.rec.audio, rec.audio.opinion and rec.audio.tubes are newsgroups
populated by self-declared audiophiles. One would expect those who
boast about their interest in music, one of the arts which express
emotion, to be sensitive. One could excuse those among them who are
"engineers" and hangers-on of engineers for being crudely insensitive
as it is well known that these types lack the finer...

Yeah, Keefie, then let Pearce come do exactly that. Be the first useful
thing I've seen Pearce do since I ran into him more than a year ago. He
(and you) will be amazed at the respect he suddenly earns by becoming

Cables - the definitive answer by
Glenn Richards
Right, I'm sick of this argument coming up constantly, so I just set up
a little test. Hardly pure science, but it's enough to make the point.
System - SPDIF output from Creative MP3 Blaster USB sound card (one of
the few that outputs at native 44.1kHz and doesn't resample to 48kHz)
connected to Arcam Black Box 50 DAC.
Yamaha DSP-A592 amplifier, Eltax Symphony 6, Symphony Centre and...

WHY STEWART PINKERTON IS UNRELIABLE: 2. THE STATISTICS OF MALICE by
Andre Jute
WHY STEWART PINKERTON IS UNRELIABLE
2. THE STATISTICS OF MALICE
In the latter part of 2004, at the request of leading members, I
started a major project called KISS on rec.audio.tubes (RAT). Pinkerton
arrived and announced he would deconstruct the project. Between the
beginning of October 2004 and the middle of February 2006 he sent 4607
messages to RAT, a labour conservatively estimated to have...

Questions about Technics kit by
John Smith
Hi,
Is there any real difference between Technics model numbers ending A and D,
for example, the CD players SL-PS670A and SL-PS670D (except the years they
we produced)?
What is AA all about (my ST-GT550 tuner apparently has AA output)?
Has Technics stopped making hi-fi separates? Looking at Panasonic/Technics
sites I can only see complete hi-fi systems.

"Remastered" CDs - the truth by
Glenn Richards
Ok, a break from arguing about cables!
Have been having a discussion on a forum about which CDs sound better,
originals or other sets of remasters. So I did a few experiments.
Take one CD. Rip, encode to MP3 (at high quality), then run MP3Gain to
set the perceived volume to 89dB. Repeat for remasters.
Open MP3s using Nero Wave Editor, or some other piece of software that
will give you a...

Digital audio experiences by
Malcolm H
(This is a copy of an input to an earlier thread)
Perhaps my experiences may be of interest. I have been a music lover and
Record/CD collector all my (rather long) life - and like to regard myself as
an audiophile. About a year ago I was persuaded to explore the advantages
of storing my large music collection on my PC and listening via a media
player. I haven't looked back since! Listening...
