Isn't this nice? by
Keith G
Phase II of my eBay clearances is nearly complete with only the trusty
Trio not yet bidded for (or sold). Some really nice guy has sent me
this:
"Hi. I have picked your ad as one of our top 3 eBay ?Catches of the day?
on my blog site. I hope the mention on our site enhances your chances of
a sale at the price you are expecting. You can see it he

Suggestions please for amplifier and speakers by
Adagio
My current stereo (not deserving of the term hi-fi!)system is now
over 15 years old and was a pretty cheap package then. I should like
to upgrade preferably in phases. Initially I plan to replace the
amplifier and speakers. My budget is around gbp 1000.
The room is approx 5x4 metres.
I need minimum 4 line inputs (no phono) of which at least 1 tape loop.
Headphone out
1 speaker pair

Cassette deck: TEAC to Nakamichi upgrade? by
[email protected]
I have a cheapo TEAC R-400X deck on which I play my old cassettes.
I was wondering if a low end Nakamichi (CR-1A/2A, BX-*, 480 etc) will
make a serious difference in playback quality. My tapes are old and
half of them are in mono. I am looking for good playback only, not
going
to make any tapes. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

RC cables and bass by
max graff
Hi guys,
I was recently auditioning the Rotel 1071 pre-power combo on some
lovely $12,000 Sonus Faber speakers. They were fitted with some $200
IXOS interconnects. I played a couple of vinyl records (Miles Davis -
So what, Pink Floyd - Dark side of the moon) the bass was overwhelming
and a bit boomy at times (at least more that what I am used to).
I replaced them with some $70 Tara Labs cables...

Questions about turntables from someone who's a bit too young! by
Tom Cumming
I am looking to buy a turntable for my sister, probably for fairly light
use and will be connected to a fairly cheap Sony mini-system. I'm looking
to spend about £100 max. I've been browsing Ebay, and hit upon a few
questions - I know this is a very low budget so I just want to make sure
I don't end up with something hopeless.
1. Obviously the mini-system doesn't have a phono preamp. Am I...

FA: eBay - tha BIG Stuff.... by
Keith G
Being a tad more *open-minded* than a few here, I have recently spent a
fair bit of time, energy and money revisiting *blameless audio* and
(surprise, surprise) have ended up right back where I started - namely,
back on '****ty' homebrew horns and valve amps playing LPs, radio, some
movies and the odd TV recording from a laptop!!
:-)
The upshot is that I am now thinning out a lot of...

Techy speaker sensitivity question by
Keith G
To spare my remaining active braincell (see other recent post) could
someone kindly tell me what the speaker sensitivity figure for 1 Watt
would be if the brochure (IMF TLS 80s) quotes:
'Efficiency measured via Pink Noise at 1 metre for 40 Watts = 98 dB'
??

Speakers by
[email protected]
I have a pair of 'AR' Hi Fi speaker enclosures which went into storage
for a while and came out with rotted suspension on the bass cones. In
order to change these bass units I have been trying to find who makes
hi fi speakers these days. Not just guitar amp speakers or car
speakers, real hi-fi speakers. It used to be Goodmans, Celestion etc.
but all searches under speakers, frame speakers,...

Sugden C51/A51 by
Jim Lesurf
Just to let people know I've now added a couple of pages on the Sugden
C51/A51 combination to the audiomisc website. This includes the circuit
diagram for the A51, but I don't have one for the C51.
Slainte,
Jim

Spherical stylus = sound with *balls*..??? by
Keith G
I wuz going through my 'spare kit' with a view to putting a few more
things on ****eBay when I happened across my hitherto neglected AKG P6R
cart with is spherical stylus:
http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/AKGP6R.jpg
....and I thought 'better give this a ride to see if it's any good - if
not, I'll get rid'! So I rigged it up (by eye only - only saps use
protractors and scales :-) and...

The clearances continue... by
Keith G
I'm heaving stuff out of the house like a demon - more of this will be
on eBay at the weekend:
http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/itemsforsale/itemsforsale.htm
Mostly the 'heavyweight/expensive' stuff, including (most probably, this
weekend) the IMF TLS80s - in which someone here expressed an interest
when I first mentioned them. If anybody does want them at a
fair/reasonable price before I...

Relay switching by
Nick Gorham
A question for the panel.
I am thinking of building myself a preamp. And I think I would like to
use relay switching for the input selectors.
What recommendations do folks have about a good relay to use for this
application?
What gets used in studio kit?

The Krooborg is on a roll! by
George M. Middius
The Krooborg is emboldened by the smoldering heat of aBxism rituals.
Not for those gifted with golden ears.
Do they even exist except as delusions?
Turdborg senses the opportunity to embark on another round of preaching
the aBxism religion. I'm going to encourage him to do so by offering a
rare glimpse inside the aBxism chapel.

Pinch Roller for Alba Dual Dubbing Cassette - CRS2005 by
CJB
Subject: Alba Dual Dubbing Cassette - Radio CRS2005
Please can anyone help me? I have the above dual cassette recorder.
Its green and includes a radio tuner.
The two cassette decks are supposed to be autostop however I have
found that with both of the recording/playback and playback decks the
levers are too stiff to autoswitch off. Or maybe the drive bands are
now too weak.

bi-wire confused by
Tim Guy[_2_]
I have a Cambridge C500 and two P500s driving a set of Tannoy 611's
I recently had a failure on one of the P500s, so dropped down to a single
P500, on top of that it appears now I have lost one of the 6" cones in one
of the Tannoys.
Anyhow, and it shows how much I noticed. When re-wiring the speakers I
noticed that I didn't get anything from the +L -L, and its not just on the
one speaker,...

Arcam or Cambridge by
Jonathan[_2_]
I have got the choice of purchasing either a secondhand Arcam FMJ33 or a
new Cambridge 840 CD player.
Unfortunately I cannot audition either in my home set up but have heard
both by way of demo. I am struggling to decide.
Any advice?

Noise Weighting Curves by
Iain Churches[_2_]
My thanks to all those, both on and off list, who
provided useful info on the noise weighting curves.
The two ITU curves are similar but
ITU-R ARM is a later Dolby Labs
proposal which moves the whole curve
1kHz to the right.
Thanks also to my pal Richard in the UK,
I now have a chart in Excel showing all three
