old hifi by
Roland Herrera
Hi group,
I have 2 hifi systems (well 5 actually) which I want to replace within
the next year. I'm just getting back into Hifi and I would love any advice :
The first is a Carver (C-1 / M-500t / TL-3300 Cd player with big 3way AR
speakers on stands). Questions : How old is this system ? Is it completely
outdated and outclassed by current equipment ? What would I need to spend to
equal or...

Behringer SRC2496 as a hi-fi DAC by
Chris Isbell
I have been on the lookout for a 44.1/48/96kHz DAC for hi-fi use. The
only device I found initially was produced by Meridian, and had a four
figure price tag.
On following some links posted here to broadcast equipment I tumbled
on a Behringer sample rate converter that also has ADCs and DACs and
costs less than two hundred...

Remote transmitter for Rover OT by

I know this is a little OT, however, I need to replace a lost remote
central
locking transmitter for my fathers Rover 115. The Rover main agent would
like the extortionate sum of £95. IMHO, this is highway robbery!
I'm not too hopeful, but any suggestions for an...

Is Minidisc dead? by
The EggKing
Well is it?
Basically I'm restricted as to what I can add to my setup - at the moment -
as my CD player/preamp is the Quad 99 CD-P. Anything I add has to be
digital. I was thinking of a minidisc seperate as I own a oprtable minidisc
player and it's not particularly reliable when it omes to recording entire
albums, quite often completely missing information. So I'm looking for
something a little...

The ones she gave me are 'audio' discs. It betrays...

remasters by
Raymond RUSSELL
Hello knowledgeable hifi specialists
What exactly is a remastered track ?
I'm thinking of buying a few CDs of my favourite music from the 60s and 70s
(e.g. Cream, Led Zeppelin, etc.)
and there seems to be a choice between originals and remastered.
What's better ? What's the difference ?
Best regards and TIA from Ray

High End Hyperbole by
Trevor Wilson
A great deal of comment is made about the hyperbole surrounding the
advertising copy for many high end audio products. Some of this hyperbole
makes some sense. Much does not. Much deserves to be criticised accordingly.
However, we rarely see comments about mass market products. I thought you'd
enjoy these words I found in the Marantz SR18 receiver service manual:

Preamp to power amp cable by
RJH
Hi - could someone advise me of the best way to hook these 2 (Audiolab 8000c
and cambridge A75, 4 metres apart) up? At the moment I'm using a 5 metre
£3.99 phono cable from Maplins and it does sound superb, at least compared
to the 8000a.
The problem with all this is i'm not sure I could reliably tell the
difference between cables (been there etc), so I suppose I'm asking about
the 'most...

If an encoder has a cutoff frequency (eg. 15KHz in NICAM), to prevent
aliasing or any other problems, is the 'shape' of he wave preserved within
the data produced?
