'Burning-in' new ampliers by
Des
Reviewers often comment that it takes about 100 hours before a new amp
settles down and start to sound like it 'should'.
In this case, what constitutes 'burning-in'? Is it sufficient to just
leaving the power on for a week? Or does it have to be driving a load
(the neighbours are going to just love that)?
Maybe a couple of chunky resistors across the outputs would be ok?

Non-linear Ear Distortion? by
íçëéìèî
Hello,
In addition to the Fletcher-Munson equal loudness curves describing our
psycho-acoustic response, are there any curves to describe distortion in the
ears?
ie. Does each set of ears/brain have a second and third order
intermodulation intercept point?
ie. Can you be bombarded with large SPLs of pure sinewaves at 20kHz and

CD copy protection by
RJH
I was just thinking about buying Radiohead's new cd (they sounded pretty
good at Glasto I thought) and notice it's got this copy protection thing.
Quick look around the net and this comes up:
http://www.papmag.net/cgi-bin/frontend/frontend.pl?page=story&sid=114
Are people really supposed to buy this stuff?!
Just have to make do with mp3s for now, which does rather defeat the object.
Literally.

Audio cable and quality? by
Carl
Just about to set up the DVD to Hi Fi (technics SCEH790)
the DVD produces decoded 5.1 sound, and the Hifi takes the decoded signal
"straight through" and to the speakers. There are therefore 6 phone sockets
on the DVD and Hifi and require a cable to link the two units about 5metres
apart. The Video also has two stereo out phones, which can be connected to
the Stereo requiring 8 cables in...

Can you measure Impedance with an Ohm Meter.. by
Denny B
Is it possible to measure Impedance with an ohm meter.
For example can you measure the Impedance of a 4 ohm
car speaker with an ohm meter?
When I tell people they cannot measure Impedance with an
ohm meter, you need an impedance meter and the impedance
must be measured with the speaker in operation, with a signal generator
supplying a fixed frequency, this always leads to disagreements
with the...

Speaker identification by
killermike
A bit of a long shot but...
....I wonder if anyone here can identify these speakers by looking at
them? I purchased them cheaply from an auction a few years ago. I /have/
opened them up before but I'm afraid that I can't remember much about
them. They had a couple of large capacitor type things inside (they were
bolted in place and the bolts were loose, so I had to hand tighten them
to stop...

Portable CD Ghettoblaster recomendation? by
Paul Groves
I know its not "hi-fi", but could anyone recommend a decent Portable CD
"Ghettoblaster" system? Doesn't need a tape deck, but line-out for a
minidisc recorder is essential, as is decent FM reception, and acceptable
sound quality and volume. I guess I'm looking to spend around £100-£150...
cheers

XI is mint and boxed, newest style bittle aluminium front panel. VI is

switchable MM/MC phono stage (better than a Michell Iso), and tape
loops, together with line inputs. Sounds totally fantastic,...

Copy Protected Cds by
Roy
Since I just came across my first problem CD and I haven't seen any mention
of them here for a while, I wondered if people are still finding them
troublesome. To be honest until I got this disc I thought the complaints
were, well, a bit exaggerated. I've changed my mind.
The disc is Mariza, Fado Curvo, on EMI Valentim De Carvalho". Lo and behold
I found it listed on...

QUAD 44 CD/Aux Vs Tape & hum by
Jonathan Ives
Hi,
Odd phenomena, but I wonder if anyone can explain.
I have a Quad 44 which feeds a Radford valve amp. I power the amp from
the slaved mains sockets on the 44, so the amp 'sees' ground through
the preamp.
If I play my CD player through the Quad CD/Aux input - sounds fine.
