CD or not CD by
Jim H
Why be coy about saying Sony and Philips? Odd :-)
Don't forget the "dedicated" mechanisms used in even the most
overpriced audiophile gear are the same cheap units as used in
everything else.
When the cheap ones can read any (undamaged) cd without error, why not? I
think a lot of audiophiles forget how trivially easy reading a cd is by
modern technological standards.

As regards the assertion that if a device can handle DVD specs then it
should be able to handle the 'inferior' specs of a CD then why
(rhetorical) does it need a second laser?

PHONO output direct to Speakers? by
Mikey
Apologies in advance to Group for this dumb newbie question.
I know basic electronics but not audio.
I have bought a standard DVD player. The S-video output is connected
to an overhead projector. But as for the sound . . .
It has two standard stereo output phono sockets - red and white.
My question:
Can I connect these directly to speakers or do I need some form of
amplifier?

Recording problems with a sony twin tape deck by

more from the 'CM school' of popular uk.rec.audio-ism
Hello everyone,
I am having a problem with my tape deck, and I am wondering if there
is anyone here in this newsgroup that could possibly help me.
I am trying to make some backup copies of some tapes I have, most of
them are recorded on at single speed and I have some tapes which were
recorded on at twice the speed (where you can...

I am aware that a transport dosen't have a filter but a dac does and thats
where the digital signal goes to. To perform at its optimum it needs a clean
digital signal. On a scope you can see how clean the signal is.
I do not know what experience you have of listening to CD transports but I can
assure you they sound different and there must be reasons for that.

How much have Amps improved much in the last 13 years? by
Ian Smith
5W is not going to make any difference. Roughly speaking, 100W sounds
twice as loud as 10W.
Amplifiers have not make big leaps and bounds in 10 years, but buying
a good separates one might be worth it. A good dealer will let you
take yours in and compare it along side one of theirs. It's worth it!
It amy also be worth considering buying a multi-channel amp so that
you could go surround sound in...

Hello again,
Thought I'd give an update...
I auditioned the Linn Classik movie-di and was very impressed. I'll probably
go for it and, if I can manage too pursuade wifey of the obvious benefits
(!!) I'll have the Linn Katans as the main front speakers, the Linn Trikan
centre speaker and Linn Sizmik bass unit. Don't know yet about rear speakers
(which really do need to be small) but I'm...

Try the new Spendor range, or for something completely different, the
B&W N805.

Soundblaster Extigy by
Tom
Hi guys...
Just bought one, reviews seemed mostly positive, with the exception of a
common prob being some crackling or popping due to the USB connection, but
was said that a high processor speed would rectify this.
I'm running a AMD XP 2.6 with 1.0GB DDR 2700 RAM
Am I likely to experience any probs when it arrives ina couple of days?
