mp3 player output volumes by
blackbat
Hi all, never posted in here before but seems you might be able to
help.
I'm looking for an MP3 player to use with an FM transmitter in my car
and occasionally an external speaker via the earphone socket.
Not headphones.
Both of the aforementioned devices benefit from a player with a high
output volume.

UKRAnians - planning ahead.... by
Keith G[_2_]
OK, it's bit early yet (need a dozen decent trax) but I think we should be
considering our options:
http://www.discmanufacturingservices.com/vinyl-prices.htm
Note not much of a price difference between standard and heavyweight black
vinyl in printed sleeves with inner bags...??
Any 'artwork' people here?

Recording software for Mac? by
Keith G[_2_]
Any Mac users here who can point me straight the no-question best (free
would be nice) audio recording software for my Mac mini?
I downloaded Audacity the other day but took fright from the look of it
and unloaded it again, but might give it another go if anyone told me it
was the best option...??
TIA.

Hybrid car below $1200 by
Hybrid car below $1200
--
You could install-it-yourself if you work around car before. The theory is
simple! You waste lots of energies through brake frictions that can't be
avoided in order to brake effectively. Now there is a device that allows you
to avoid those frictions, this device adds a strong friction back when you need
to brake, when you don't need to brake your car runs freely without any drag.

Ribbon for Alto? by

Posted in the spirit of a *no fees will be paid*/*no invitation to to tender
for a consultancy contract exists or is being offered*, amateur/hobbyist
enquiry* only does anybody disagree the ribbon mic beats the Oktava for the

Alps 40mm detent pots by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
Anyone know who imports/sells the Alps 40mm detent pots in the UK? I've
been trying to find out via google but not found anyone who does these as
stereo 'log law' pots, and sell small quantities or one-off.
FWIW I still have some pots for my own use. But one of the projects I'm
working on may involve one, and I might then want to publish details so
readers can make something similar if they...

Making my record player sound better by
D.M. Procida
My record player sounds pretty good, on the whole (it's a Linn Basik
with Linn arm and cartridge that I got about 17 or 18 years ago).
However, on some records, it can sound a bit glassy. I don't know if
that's the right word. In louder passages - especially towards the end
of a side, I *think* - sustained notes seem to have a brittle edge to
them.
Because nearly all of my vinyl records are...

Movie recommendation by
Keith G[_2_]
Anyone here of a 'certain age' and into renting movies might be interested
to rent the very enjoyable 'The Boat That Rocked':
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1131729/
At least an OK little comedy (if a little *Brit*) set onboard a North Sea
pirate radio station in the 60s. Overdone and underdone in all the right
places, I think it captures the 'zeit' fairly well with plenty of lovely 60s...

AKG C1000s evaluation by
Iain Churches[_2_]
Some time before Christmas, Don made an interesting comment in
that he was "surprised that the AKG C1000s was still in production
due to its poor reputation"
The AKG C1000s is as a budget level condenser mic ("condensor"
for Arny) and, according to the dealer I spoke to, one of their
strongest selling lines.
So who buys them, and for what purpose?

Interference on sub woofer amps by
Brian Gaff
My subwoofer picks up. Mobile phones, radar pulses, clicks and bangs on the
mains and occasionally short wave radio.
The very short speaker wires from amp to speaker in the box appear to be the
culprits for the higher frequencies, and the input leads the way in for the
rest, except
The mains borne crap.
It has a three core mains lead of the iec variety, but its only been doing

Sound cards. by
Brian Gaff
I had to put a new psu in a machine over the Christmas, and now notice the
bog standard Soundblaster live card seems to be outputting a kind of
gurgling whine which varies and kind of sounds likt e sort of low level
interference you get on some weaker fm stations.
I guess the crud removal in the psu is crap, but the thing is,does anyone
do a kind of gadget you can plug the motherboard power...

Setup advice by
Schizoid Man[_2_]
Hello,
I recently acquired a pair of Dynaudio floorstanders and have inherited a
Primare A30.2 power amp. I have an old hand-me-down Denon AVR 3300 (used to
be top-of-the-line back in its day), which I am planning to use as a
preamplifier. At the moment, I'm using a cheap source - a Samsung DVD player
DVDHD870.
I am wondering whether I should I the DVD player's onboard DAC and run an...

UK retailer, white phono cables? by
D.M. Procida
I need (OK, want) some white phono cables, but white seems to be
reserved either for ludicrously expensive iPod phono leads, or for
white versions of the semi-disposable 49p leads.
White versions of the kind of thing that seems to sell for between £5
and £10 online would be OK.
Who makes and sells them, if anyone?
Or alternatively, some kind of white duct for the black phono leads

New page on Squares waves and amplifier performance by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
Hi,
I've just put up a new web page at
http://www.audiomisc.co.uk/HFN/SquareDeal/SquareDeal.html
that looks at the use of squarewaves for assessing amplifiers, etc.
Prompted to do this by noticing squarewave results being used to present
ideas about speaker cables, and realising that the humble squarewave has

Q of passive equaliser by
Ian Bell
Suppose you have a simple pot divider consisting of two equal value
resistors, say 10K each. Across the upper one you connect a series LC
circuit that resonates at 3KHz or thereabouts. If you drive this network
from a low impedance source and plot the response across the bottom
resistor, the Q of the resulting peak is not the Q of the series LC but
rather is determined by the pair of LC...
