Small but decent speakers by Dave Plowman (News)
Any comments on the Q-Acoustics 2010? Seems they are available in a finish that would suit. ;-) -- *Marathon runners with bad footwear suffer the agony of defeat* Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound.

Denon arrives by UnsteadyKen
A courier staggered out of a blizzard this afternoon, (three inches of snow here now), and delivered the Denon. It was described in the auction as used and excellent. A better description would have been.. Removed from box with kid gloves, used for 10 minutes, 2 presets tuned in, carefully replaced in original packing with all accessories, original interconnect, AM loop and an unread...

Software advice please. by Woody[_3_]
I have decided the time has come to put our CD library - around 400 of 'em - onto HDD. I need a software package - preferably free or inexpensive - that will rip the CDs to mp3/wav/ogg/aac, provide a directory system that can be sorted by track name, artist, or album, and be able to retrieve track information from the Interweb. Basically I suppose I'm looking for something like iTunes but I...

Right up Amy's street.... by Keith G[_2_]
One of the distinct bonuses of having grabbed vinyl from the charity shops like a cat burying crap, a couple of years back (when it was cheap) is that you could quickly amass a great depth of 'variations on a theme' and could easily end up with a dozen or so versions of certain works and you could harvest certain composers and orchestra/conductor pairings without even looking at the album...

"Shouting Down" on URA by David Looser
"Iain Churches" wrote Thinking back, there have been very few people indeed on this group who were "active in audio", by that I mean actuallty building things, amps and speakers, and making evaluations and comparisons. ISTM that there are quite a lot of people here who build things. In recent months the group has had requests for help with all sorts of

Date wanted by Brian Gaff
Not sure how to go about this. Just 'restored' a tape I made of Petula Clark Live in London from the Beeb. its actually quite a good recording, none of this squashed dynamic radio 2 do these days. Anyway, can anyone tell me when this was put out? I need to label the cd! Brian -- Brian Gaff....Note, this account does not accept Bcc: email. graphics are great, but the blind can't hear them

Tubey techy tidbit..... by Keith G[_2_]
OK, here's a nice little tidbit for the techies in here, if anyone wants it - I've got a couple of these little Tubey mic preamps: http://www.moirac.adsl24.co.uk/showntell/MicPreAmp.jpg Which you will see have a 'third knob' for 'ART's new V3 (Variable Valve Voicing) Technology'...??? I've always ignored it and used it 'Flat' but what does it do? What's

Computer-DAC by Rob[_3_]
I've connected a Cambridge Dacmagic to a Mac Mini via the optical connection, and I'm not sure which settings to select in the Apple audio setup, for stereo playback through iTunes. It offers a variety of 2ch settings with a variety of formats (44.1 - 96) and bits (16 - 24). They all work, but I'd like the theoretical best setting, if there is one. Thanks, Rob

6 mic channels into a laptop by Mike Scott
Any ideas please on the cheapest and/or best way of getting 6 channels of microphones connected to a laptop? I'm looking at upgrading a Talking Newspaper's systems from the current '70's-standard analogue system. There's a need to minimise the number of boxes, and to de-skill the setup (it has to be taken apart each week - we'd love a dedicated home for the studio!!) We don't really need a...

Radio Mics by Dave Plowman (News)
Strange for me to ask such a question but I've simply got no direct experience of this end of the market. My brother is an elder of the kirk and they need a replacement body pack radio mic. Just for the minister. These days they wander round the kirk rather than remaining in the pulpit. ;-) One which you popped into a charger after use would be ideal - it's only used perhaps three times a week...

Normally, I don't solicit (or usually get) comments and/or criticisms when I post little 'fun' recordings and vinyl transcription clips but this time I'm curious - anybody got any comments on this one: http://www.moirac.adsl24.co.uk/showntell/GeorgiaM.mp3 Is it *too* mellow?

Music download sites offering CD quality. by Michael Chare
There are many web sites that will let you download music in mp3 format, though not all show what bit rate the files are stored in. Can anyone recommend any sites that have a large selection of music in a CD quality format, such as WMA Lossless or FLAC 16/44.1 -- Michael Chare

House of Lords inquiry into digital radio switchover by DAB sounds worse than FM[_2_]
The following is a copy of a newsletter I've just sent from my website, which people who aren't happy with the Government's plans to switch off FM stations at some point over the next decade might be interested in: The House of Lords Communications Select Committee is holding an inquiry into the digital switchover of TV and radio. Written submissions must arrive at the House of Lords by 1st...

Cognitive dissonance? by Keith G[_2_]
These rough and ready 'test clips' are recorded with two different mics, one of which only arrived today and cost about *four times* the price of the other, so is obviously much better; the only question is which is it - A or B..?? (The mics stay with the same letter throughout and the 'Piano' clips are a finger walk up and down the keyboard only - due to a badly buzzing 'string' making...

Recruiting for the UKRAinian All Stars by Iain Churches[_2_]
We are now planning a second recording of the UKRAinians All Stars Orchestra, and invite the particpation of everyone here.
