Hi Fi Cabinet with doors and sides by
alphawave
Hi, I'm trying to source a cabinet for my HiFi/AV kit.
It needs to be able to house my Pioneer AV amp (420mm Wide x 200mm
High x 460mm Deep) plus 4 smallet pieces of equipment.
All 5 pieces of kit must go inside the unit and it must have locking
glass doors (so infra red's will work) and sides - to keep little
fingers out.
Stands Unique (www.standsunique.com) used to do one as part of their

A Cable test on Stereo Net Australia. by
bassett
A subjective test by experts of the SNA inner circle
A while ago someone suggested that a set of Turkish made interconnects and
speaker cables be tested and assessed by a group of know-it-alls on SNA
(Stereo Net Australia). They (the SNA overlords) thought about it for a
while to try and decide who was proficient and suitably qualified (who were
the suck holes actually?) and who wasn't to...

Signwriting question by
TonyL
For those who build equipment in small batches...what system do you use for
front panel signwriting ? I need something better than "letter by letter"
press-on dry transfer systems.
Is there a system where you can print direct from PC onto some sort of
special sheet and then transfer results to a front panel ?
Thanks.

You can rip a CD perfectly using a PC CD-ROM drive and the right
software, which gives you an error-free wav copy of the signal.
So you reckon you'd be...

infra red headsets for AD by
Brian Gaff
Hi, I was just wondering, does anyone know anything about the system
installed in Theatres and cinemas to give audio description?I'm not
interested in the DVD interface and all that stuff. I'd like to know how the
transmission is done. I assume its analogue of some sort, judging by the way
the noise level can vary if you move.
The reason I'm interested is that a user of these is looking for...

Gramophone archive opened, including Audio reviews, by
Roger Thorpe[_3_]
Ummm, as the title says. If you've only read the Gramophone in the last
few years you might be pleasantly surprised how good it used to be.
Scanned text of the articles are open to all, but you have to register
to get the PDF facsimile.
Here's a taste from 1977 " The Musicassette: Boon or Monster" by John
Borwick.

High Definition Audio. by
Roger Thorpe[_2_]
Without starting a debate about whether HD audio is really needed, would
anyone here like to attempt a prediction of the likely sound carrier of
the future?
I'm not very good at this myself (I said that CDs would never catch on)
and backed the SACD horse a few years ago. I can see that Dolby True HD
and DTS HD are likely candidates for physical media, however the
copy-proof characteristics...

Serious vinyl quality control problem? by
Don Pearce[_2_]
I was interested in how heavily modulated vinyl could be, so I popped
an old record (Long Hot Summer Night, Jimi Hendrix, Track Records
1968) under the microscope for a look. And what did I find? Two
adjacent grooves clearly broken into each other:

Was this a really common back then, or is this kind of thing a rarity?

Printed circuit board fabrication by
TonyL
You people have given me great advice before (grovel, grovel) so here I am
asking for some more.
I've made PCBs before but always as one-off projects using transfers and
etch resist pens. But I need to produce 50-60 now !
My requirements are very modest...single sided, a couple of 14 pin DILs and
a few other components, size around 50mm x 100mm.
Does anybody know of a reasonably priced...

adverts by
Brian Gaff
To some extent, I don't mind adverts on here, but adverts for adverts on
ebay tend to irk me as it means launching a browser then finding the data
etc. I'd have thought if people were going to post an ad, the least they
could do is say something about it, and then nobody would waste their time
going to ebay if half the thing is missing or its broken.
Of course there may well be a charter...

The effects of Snow on Music Reproduction by
Adrian C
My house is snuggling in a nice 5-inch north London blanket of snow and
outside, traffic noise has decreased to the level it normally is at
night. The atmopheric pressure and the supplied heating must be doing
something to the sound transmission qualities of air.
My hi-fi sounds wonderful....

unusual speakers by
Brian Gaff
Hi, many years ago I remember being impressed by some speakers that looked a
bit like footballs. The ones I saw were made by Toshiba as I recall, but
were out of my price range. They had literally speakers mounted in a multi
sided solid a bit like a dodecahedron, and covered up with some kind of
foam. You could hang them from the ceiling or on a stand. Very heavy for
their size. The mounting...

Automated music playout - MusicIP like Genius by
Adrian C
Heads up on an interesting bit of software, if ye have a huge library of
compressed music on a computer (iTunes or not).
http://www.musicip.com/
Their aim is to identify music tracks acoustically and find similar
patterns that enable intelligent sequencing, like Apple iTunes Genius
and (*sniffle* gone from UK) Pandora - except the whole collection used
is that of your stored media, be it...
