Brennan JB7 by
Geoff Mackenzie
Brennan JB7
Does anyone have experience (or comments) on this? On the face of it looks
ideal for my needs - copies CDs but much more importantly allows me to
record my LPs from my own turntable and pre-amp, unlike those godawful
machines frequently advertised in the mass media.. Also has a 60wpc power
amp built in which would do me very nicely. For a bit south of 400 quid it
seems too...

DAB bubbling mud advice needed by
UnsteadyKen[_4_]
Dear Marge.
It's not fair, I never get to hear this bubbling mud on DAB that
everyone raves about.
Perhaps it's my own fault for stupidly using an external DAB dipole to
receive the following ensembles here in NN17 land.
Ensemble Block Transmitter
BBC National 12B Peterborough
Digital One 11D Peterborough

Re radiofix.. was bubbling mud by
Brian Gaff
Hi, its strange. I spent over an hour on the pure web site and never came
across this info, just went around in circles, and as I sy, the only way to
get messages to them meant filling out a picture capture thingy that blind
folk cannot do of course. No sign of an audio version and I'd have given
them a piece of my mind for that if I could have.

The price of valves by
Don Pearce[_3_]
Interesting insight into the way things were in the 60s - I've just
been reading a Wireless World from November of that year. Valves
(tubes for those across the pond) were extremely cheap. And
transistors cost pretty much the same, which is why we treated them
with kid gloves and thermal shunts when soldering them into circuits.

PCB layout affecting audio quality by
fredbloggstwo
Hi All,
I was laying out a pcb tonight for a line amplifier using a tool called PCB
Wizard (a good little tool) and reminiscing to myself how I used to do it in
the past using black tape and a scalpel onto clear film.
Despite the ability of PCB Wizard to autoroute etc., I still prefer to lay
the track out myself. As well as the obvious topological challenge, I
was trying to wonder why...

Ping: Brian Gaff. Re Electronic Stereo by
Iain Churches[_2_]
Brian,
I was interested in your impressions of "electronic stereo"
particular with regard to popular music, as it was sometimes
done in the 60's and 70's
I have now found the demo file, made many years ago,
to which I referred in the other thread.
It is divided into three segments, with clear gaps between each.

OT?: Socketry by
Rob[_3_]
Came across this on another newsgroup:
http://www.iconeye.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3864:rca-student-radically-improves-the-uk-plug
-
Seems just the thing to at least start to tidy up the plug/socket
proliferation I have - 11 at the TV/hifi for example.
ISTR something similar for low current appliances - is it still made?

Sound card for recording by

I'd like to make some recordings, maybe transferring some gems from my
vinyl collection to digital etc. I'm wondering whether I should use a
better sound card than the onboard sound.
I know one of the regulars here occasionally posts about an almost
universal design flaw on sound cards where the...

Anyone here with 'mic savvy' who can say if the tech spec on the valve mic
I've just bought is OK?

Dual mono vs. mono mono interrogative... by
Keith G[_2_]
I have a number of (predominantly jazz) mono albums I want to 'digitise' and
they present me with an interesting dilmma - whether to record them as 'dual
mono' or 'mono mono'..??
So, is there any convention or meaningful reason why they should not be
recorded as 'dual mono' if I choose, or indeed is there any merit in
recording them thus?? One thing I notice is the spitchy bits (no cleaning...

Not so high fidelity. by
Eiron
I was listening to some Haydn the other evening. It sounded crap.
The soundstage was artificially wide with poor localization.
The vocals were muddled and lost in the orchestra.
Some very sour noises coming from somewhere - there was so much
reverberation that the previous few notes
must have been interfering with the current one.
After a small adjustment, things were perfect - I got up and...

Flac vs 320kbps mp3 by
Michael Chare
I have been struggling to hear much (any) difference between flac and
320kbps mp3 files pulled from the free downloads on the Naim website.
but then I also found that the max frequency I can here is more like 11,000
Hz compared with the 15,500 Hz I could hear in the 60s.
It would appear that I am not alone in not being able to tell the...

10:57 I sent the reply, telling them the problem was only in Firefox

My local Lidl has Yamaha dynamic mics with desk stand and pop shield -
described as being for vocals - for approx 30 quid. I'd say that worth a
