Pic of carrier bags full of spare cables in my garage... by
Keith G[_2_]
The cables, interconnects, mains leads and speaker wires in these carrier
bags:

have been heaped in my garage as you can see. Now, all I have to do is sort
them out and chuck what I don't want to keep....

AKG C451 mics by
Alan S.
Is anyone here still using AKG C451 mics, or remembers using them?
I've had my 4 for some time but am becoming more and more aware of a low
level hum on the output. The hum gets worse the more of them that are
plugged in to the mixer. If only one is faded up, the hum gets worse as
others are plugged in. At first I thought the phantom power supply was
giving trouble but I have now tried them...

It's official - LPs are on the up again! by

Well OK, that's what my mate SN says on the basis that he bumped into a
friend buying vinyl in a charity shop at the same he (SN) was buying vinyl
in the same charity shop! :-)
Actually, he does say that more people are mentioning it in the shop lately
and buying needles - which they apparently do rather a lot of! (There was
summat else interesting/relevant he said that I would have...

Mic amp any good? by
Keith G[_2_]
I'm having a purge and have this mic amp which someone gave to me:
http://www.moirac.adsl24.co.uk/AMP01-01.jpg
http://www.moirac.adsl24.co.uk/AMP01-02.jpg
I have never used it (too big and cumbersome) and don't know if it even
works, although I can't see why it shouldn't.
Anyhow, does anybody recognise it (Google comes up with zilch) and, if so,

'European sound tuned'....?? by
Keith G[_2_]
I posted a request for amp recommendations recently (post since deleted, so
I can't append), but don't bother now, I have grabbed a nice little Denon
PMA-510 from the local shop - which should do what I want without too much
fuss (heat). Waiting for it to be delivered as I speak - I wuz on me 'bike
and there's a 120" projection screen also, anyway!
Anyway, I know nothing about them and...

On this machine I use the ASIO4ALL driver, currently v2.9. This makes

In Playback Devices I attempt to activate KP2 and the JABB soundset.
Error message "Installation folder is not writable, select a folder

Huuuum by
Dave Plowman (News)
Got an 'interesting' fault on an ancient Linsey Hood amp. Switch on a
light etc, and sometimes *one* channel bursts into loud mains hum - but
carries on working. And the output transistors get very hot. It's not
normally susceptible to mains born interference - so any guesses before I
rip it apart?
Both channels seem to match ok before this happens.

Frequency response of the ear by
Eiron
I was thinking about doing some dummy head recording and the effect on
frequency response
of using an electret capsule in a model of an ear, compared to just
placing it on the surface of a head-sized sphere.
Any thoughts before I start moulding body parts in plaster?

Head wear query by

** One for the tape gurus .....
See ABSE under same heading for close up pic of a quarter inch play head
from a Roland tape echo machine -
the other two play heads and the record head look just the same.
A. What the heck happened ?
B. What is the easiest way to re-surface the heads ?

The end of analysis. by
Ian Iveson
Science is over. That's why there appears to be nothing to
talk about, save for the munching of tedious detail, which
is just more nothing to talk about.
This is where analysis got us in the end. Now, if analysis
is the fount of all we feel able to call knowledge, we know
everything.
Anyone who wants to "stir things up" and also stay on topic
must think of a valid new perspective, and...

New page on speaker cables by

Just to let people know that I've now put up a webversion of the second
article I did on Loudspeaker Cables for HFN. This one is called "Ohm and
Away" and is now linked from the main Audiomisc page.
I've been told that the third article will (finally!) appear in the issue
of HFN that comes out at the end of this month. The third article has the
measured results for various cables, and is...

Dynaudio speakers back from the menders . . . by
Rob
I posted a while ago about a rattle from one of my Dynaudio Contour 1.1
speakers.
It was a bass unit - the guy (Moorgate Acoustics, Sheffield) didn't know
what had gone wrong. It was broken, needed replacing, so he replaced it.
£130. One of the irritations of Dynaudio - they won't sell direct to owners.
As for pair matching (only one was replaced) he said they were within
tolerance, and...
