Leave it on or switch it off? (Was: Nakamichi) by
Trevor Wilson
Further to the recent thread on the Nakamichi amplifier, I did a little
digging. I scanned my own service records and, since I computerised them
(ca: 1989) I was able to work out how many power switches I've replaced in
the last 18 years (around 20,000 repairs). I found that I had replaced 26
power switches. This is across domestic audio equipment almost exclusively.
I work a day or two at a...

Studio Furniture by
Ian Bell
I want to have some custom designed studio furniture built. Nothing fancy,
just something to take my AKAI DPS24 and a pair of matching mobile racks.
I'll need a shelf above the AKAI for an LCD monitor, and shelves above the
rack for monitors.
I have already made contact with www.studioracks.co.uk who seem very capable
but I was wondering if there are any similar companies?
Cheers

suggestions for budget amp? by
RobertL
I am very out of touch with the current market offerings for budget
stereo amplifiers and i wonder if anyone can advise me.
I currently use a Cambridge audio 640A but am not very impressed with
it. The buttons are wearing out (not always responding when pressed)
and one channel has died (producing very loud white noise
continuously).
The system is in my office. It is a small room and the...

Crimson Elektrik by
Alec
I have an old Crimson Elektrik preamp and power amp that I need to move on
to a good home. It was driving my Gale 401s but my son has blagged those as
a family heirloom !
The preamp has a MC and MM input and the power amp is now using two Maplin
150W FET modules as the originals gave up. The original modules are
available as are the circuit diagrams.
Is anyone interested ?
I am near M1...

How can I tell music has been an MP3? Quantitative Measurement of Fidelity by
Dave
I have been disappointed with the audio quality of some CDs I have
bought recently. Is there a free program I can use to get an accepted
measurement of fidelity? (like a signal to noise ratio)
I have my suspicious that some may have been stored an MP3s and then
"unripped" in the factory. So how can I tell for certain if my CD has
been an MP3, or other lossy format? I'd hope mp3 storage would...

Nakamichi Receiver - OK To Leave It On? by
EADGBE
I bought a used Nakamichi TA-4A Stasis receiver and I am currently
using it in a spare room to amplify a DVD
player.
I have a 13 year old son who never turns things off. And by "never" I
mean NEVER EVER.
Every time he uses the receiver to watch a DVD, he simply walks away
from it when he is finished.

Ping Don.. by
Keith G
(As opposed to *pinged off*?? :-)
As you're aboot Don Old...
I've emailed Nick Gorham to no effect (inconsiderate sod has probably
buggered off on holiday), so perhaps you could rummage your 'valve
savvy' and assist me with a problem?
I've got Tone The Clone's 300B monoblocs back again. I have previously
removed the volume pots and they were fine; then he put a 300B in in 90

noise - pp vs rms vs what you see on a scope by
[email protected]
I am making some noise measurements of tubes (valves) and I need some help
in turning observations into measured values. I do not have a true rms
audio millivoltmeter, just a Ferrograph RTS2 test set which has a
millivoltmeter calibrated for sine waves. From tests I have done it clearly
under reads white noise significantly. So I need help inconverting what I
see on the scope (connected to the...

sound check of "In Our Time" by
Martin Schöön
Could some kind soul out there check out the sound quality
of archived "in Our Time"? I subscribe to the podcast and
those mp3s sound quite OK (mono yes, and only 56 kbps
but pretty adequate for a talk show). The 'back issues',
on the other hand are only available as Real Audio streams
and they all have an unpleasant metallic 'twang' to them.
I don't know if it is the feed or my SW/HW combo that...

How many Quad IIs ?? by
Phil Allison
Hi,
recently had two Quad II amps in for repairs and partial refurbishing -
new filter caps, cathode resistors etc.
One of them carried a serial number of over 153,000.
How many did Acoustical finally make before they changed to the 303 ?

Adding reverb to hi-fi by
[email protected]
Has anybody tried using a studio reverb unit, or other processors,
with a hi-fi system? I have found some recordings, especially
classical ones, are a bit dry, which is why I'm thinking of trying it.
www.studiospares.com
have a selection at reasonable prices, which units has anyone used
here?
Some models have a digital input, which could be used with a CD

6AU6 triode mode noise results by
[email protected]
I have now made noise measurements on 28 6AU6 tubes, all connected with
plate and suppressor grounded and using the screen grid as anode. The
cathode bias resistor is fully bypassed. Initial tests showed that noise
was masked by hum from the heaters so for these tests 4xAA batteries were
used for the heater supply. Noise measurements were made with the grid
shorted to ground. The output noise in...

New table radio to challenge Tivoli by
[email protected]
I am very active in a Chinese radio discussion board, I am lucky
enough to be one of the only few people who got a chance to review the
engineering model of VAL R-301 radio. The biggest surprise to me is
the sound, it has a very warm and tube-like sound only heard from
vintage European radios, the bass is
relaxed yet powerful, better than the tight bass available from
Tivoli.
For features, it...
