Multi-channel audio editors? by
Eiron
Any recommendations for multi-channel audio editors?
Most of them seem to only do stereo.
Given a 5.1 soundcard it would be easy enough to prototype active crossovers
by taking a stereo wav and filtering it into 5 channels:
left and right highpass for the tweeters;
left and right bandpass for the woofers;
summed lowpass for a sub, with appropriate delays.
Of course a Behringer DCX2496 would do...

Canceling distortion by
Ian Bell
I am designing a mic pre based on three 6AU6 tubes. The first two are
operated as triodes with no NFB with an overall gain setting pot divider
between them and the last is a cathode follower. I have discovered that by
judicious selection of the component values in the CF that the
predominantly 2H distortion of the first two stages can be reduced by a
factor of 10. This effect is not frequency or...

heater cathode insulation by
Ian Bell
What is a typical value for this? I have just got some NOS Russian 6AU6
tubes and they test fine for gm on my AVO twin panel tester. Heater/cathode
insulation reads 2 Megohms in every case. Is this satisfactory?

Long shot - Dynaco Mk III article scan? by
Keith G
I have just been informed that Ken Kessler has been saying some very
nice things about my Dynaco Mk III monoblocs somewhere in the trade
press recently. Does anyone have the article and, if they do, would it
be possible to get a scan or a digital photo of it?
Long shot, I know, but it would be interesting to see it - maybe he's
not quite the wattock I've got him down for? :-)
(The amps are...

screen grid decoupling by
Ian Bell
In some preamp designs I have seen the screen grid of a pentode decoupled
directly to ground *and in others to the cathode (which is itself
decoupled). Is there any particular reason/advantage in doing it one way or
the other?
Cheers
Ian

Time to return to RAT's roots by

Picked up from a reply by Sander to Worthless Wieckless:

6AU6 by
Ian Bell
I notice RDH has several examples of using a 6AU6 in preamplifiers. These
seem readily available for reasonable prices (unlike the EF86 which seems
to be getting more expansive every day). Has anyone any experience using
the 6AU6 in preamps and is it any good?
Cheers
Ian

Recommended CD/DVD drive by
Steve Swift
I'm looking for a replacement CD/DVD drive for my desktop PC (so
standard height, 5.xxinch)
I'd like to be able to write Dual Layer DVD's, CD-R and CD-RW and also
to play audio CD's.
You'd think that any drive would play audio CD's, but I've seen reviews
of the Sony AWG170A that complain that it won't play audio CDs!
My Plextor PX-708A is starting to fail reading audio CD's, and from new
it...

Does splitting an optical signal reduce its power? by
[email protected]
I'm trying to run an optical signal from my PC (source) to 2 units: A
Cambridge Audio receiver (for driving my speakers) and an old Sony DAC/
processor (for my Stax headphone rig).
What I've done is taken an optical cable from my PC, put an optical
(1:2) splitter on the end, then run one cable from the splitter to my
Cambridge receiver, the other to my Sony DAC.
The Sony receives the signal...

Tone the Clone on the Phone (again)... by
Keith G
The trouble with being cloned is that you acquire something of a
responsibility and/or duty of care and, despite trying to slip quietly
out of the back door in all matters thermionic, I am being fetched up to
sort out various problems that (were it my own kit) I would sooner run
away from, or cure by my customary method of consigning the offending
articles to a couple of weeks/months under...
