Hello, I'm looking to get a new set of speakers, and am trying to get some sort of idea where I should be looking price wise. They'll be used for music about 75% of the time, and for home cinema, 25% of the time, and will be driven by a Denon AVR1804 for now. My music collection's quite varied, although I'd probably want the best performance on fairly punchy classical, think Holst's Planet...

Nice & Easy Method to make quality curved cabinets at home. by [email protected]
Hi, A way exists to make quality ( 60# cubic foot MDF density ) but Curved- Wall loudspeaker cabinets in a home workshop. The benefits are well-known and published on books and discussed on the internet so the sound quality, both measured and qualitative are not discussed in this message. You do receive the following:

Another one for the Setties... by Keith G
The recent addition to the local 'Audio Enthusiasts Club' (and voracious grabber of valves, 300B Sets and Lowthers) whose 300B monos I sorted a few days ago has gone in for a spot of tube rolling and is now battering me with questions I don't really know the asnswers to (pardon the grammar!) - he has bought a pair of EH300Bs and is now asking me about bias. He won't take the following as...

And another one... by Keith G
The other evening I dropped a loaned DVD back round to my nearest 'audio enthusiast' friend and he grabbed a quick opportunity to show me his recent eBay win - a Technics SL150 with his SME III fitted. Yesterday he was round to catch a quick listen on my kit - summat he wanted to check. (I/he/we do that...) I put a record on (he has the identical album) and he listened for a few moments,...

RCA Dynagroove - Exactly what is it? by Serge Auckland
I recently was given about 600 LPs, of varying material. After eliminating Mrs Mills Piano Party, Suddenly it's Des O'Connor and The Hits from the shows played on the Kazoo, I have got about 150 classical LPs in pretty good condition, even though many go back to the early 60s and a few to the late 50s. Some of the RCA discs have the Dynagroove system, which, if I remember correctly,...

Darft behaviour... by Keith G
OK, for all those socked in by, er, grey skies - here's some silliness I recorded earlier after unsuccessfully trying to get my USB mic working on my Nuvistor laptop: These are mono recording samples of various clips from my MP3 store recorded by a handheld USB mic on the *same* computer they are playing from!! (Mad, ain't it? :-) Headphones almost *de rigeur* to kill some of the 'room'...

Wire and Cables - Like Coffee and Soda for Restaurants by George M. Middius
Poopie goes to the pawn shop to redeem his soul, but it was wholesaled outta there some fifty-odd years ago. Any number of "I think it sounds better"s mean ABSOLUTELY ZERO. You and your buddy Kroo**** simply hate it when Normals talk like humans about music and the equipment we use to listen to it. Poopie, your existence seems defined by envy and inferiority. The occasional wild fantasy...

recording level by stuart noble
I'm using Absolute Sound Recorder to record BBC internet radio and would like some advice on the settings. On the recording side, the "wave out mix" volume setting goes up to 65535, but my best results are way down at 1214. If I use this level, do I up the soundcard playback volume control or just use the speakers? I'm totally confused having 3 volume settings to adjust. I don't hear any...

QUESTION: Nakamichi TA-4A Stasis Receiver - NO OUTPUT by EADGBE
Hello All: I found a Nakamichi TA-4A Receiver at a thrift store, and I am attempting to repair it. I can't find the service manual, so I thought I would ask around to see what the problem might be, before I start digging into it. (NOTE: This is a STASIS model receiver with quasi- class A circuitry licensed from Threshold, so it's worth fixing!) When I got the TA-4A home, I discovered that even...

how good are class D amplifiers? by Keith G
"Keith G" wrote in message news:... "Serge Auckland" wrote Indeed, and for a rigorous explanation I fully agree. However, what I was trying to get across as that the perceived loudness mostly comes from mid-high frequency energy, consequently missing the extreme botom and top won't make a large difference to the...
