Partridge transformers by
Andre Jute
Partridge output transformers are mentioned in the RDH4 in somewhat
suspicious circumstances, as outlined by Patrick Turner in the
contemporaneous Williamson thread on RAT.
I don't want to mix into the technicalities of that because I didn't
measure the pair of Partridges I had on loan for a while.
Partridge was always very secretive. I seem to recall there was a Dr
Partridge, a sort of a...

Error 2? by
shazzbat
My daughter tells me that the stereo in her car is showing the message Error
2. The car is an Astra, I don't know if the stereo is Vx original or
aftermarket.
Is this error 2 likely to be fixable?
TIA

Heathrow Show impressions by
Andy Evans
Popped in this afternoon. All the usual suspects, I guess. I took a CD
and played it on quite a few systems. Mainly disappointing. Chord
probably the worst, alongside Bauhorn. Both were significantly
coloured, with the Chord CD player adding some interesting pops to the
CD and the amp some earthquake low frequencies. I was glibly told it
was a bad recording and this was the microphone...

Can a DAC improve mono sound stage? by
[email protected]
Hi,
I recently picked up an old Musical Fidelity X-DAC at an audio sale.
It seems to be a slight improvement on my Quad CD66, little wider
sound stage, fractionally more precise instrument positioning.
However, what did surprise me was that some mono recordings seem to
have this 'widened sound stage'. Is this possible? Can a DAC do this
or is there some DSP or analogue tweak being used to...

Hi, I have been given a pair of Monitor Audio 1200/Gold that wi would
like to repair and use. My repair guy tells me that he can use "after

be great to loacte the genuine parts in order to restore these
fantastic speakers as close to their original condition as possible.

Ronnie Hazlehurst. by
Dave Plowman (News)
Just heard on the news he's died. He composed and MD'd many of the most
famous BBC comedy show signature tunes - my favourite being Last of the
Summer Wine, and Yes, Minister. He had an uncanny knack of making his
music tell the basics of the situation. And was a true gentleman. Will be
much missed.

Having just managed a clear out of audio bits and bobs, the place was

Is there anyway I can connect sterio speakers from 10yrs ago(wires in the... by
MDC
You could look into getting a Sonic Impact 5066 T-amp. They are a
little $30 unit that will amplify the sound. They just have a 3.5 mm
jack that plugs into them and then you will be able to connect your
speakers to that. You can get one online at www.partsexpress.com. Good
Luck!!!

Cable *enthusiasts* note the 'Silver Spiral' interconnects at scallywag

So what are the best Chinese valve amps??? by
Andy Evans
We had an amp shootout in the London Audiocircle tonight and had a
chance to hear 5 chinese amps.
A pair of Bez T3B 300b SETs sounded the best of the lot, and by some
margin.
Two 845 amps were admired for their top to bottom "authority". I
thought they were a bit bland compared to the life in the 300b amp.
A Push Pull EL34 amp with feedback was very forgettable. On the other

Anybody listening to Radio 3 atm? by

I've just heard some Kraut bass-baritone (Thomas Quasthoff) absolutely
*m-u-r-d-e-r* 'My Funny Valentine' (I think it was - difficult to tell)
after a lofty discussion on R3 just now about 'crossover singers'
failing and that gushy plonker Sean Rafferty has just called it
'sensational'....

Or is it me...??

Digital out from a CD player with no digital out? by
[email protected]
Hi,
I've got a Technics SL-PD688 CD Changer and I would like to extract a
digital audio signal from it to feed into a external DAC. The DAC has
a digital coax input.
Has anyone done this with a CD player that does not come with a
digital out option? Do I just need to find the input to the internal
DAC and tap a signal off from there or is it more difficult than
that?

Is there a value in QUAD II amplifiers? by
Bo-Lennart
Hi, all out there....
I can see that there is some talk around QUAD II amplifiers from
1960's.
I have 3 of those amplifiers. I have tested them and all works. But I
don't have tubes to all of them. So I have to move around the tubes to
have the amplifiers checked.
Do You think there is some value in these 3 amp's???
They have been used by the Swedish Television as control-rooms
amplifiers.

Killer CD player by
Trevor Wilson[_2_]
I've been mucking about with an absolute honey of a CD player for a few
days. A Harman Kardon HD970. A real giant-killer for RRP AUS$599.00.
Highly recommended. Very detailed, very quiet (quieter than my test
equipment, in fact) and, IMO, extremely well priced. It will accept the
output of a transport, or it can be used as a transport on it's own
(though why you'd bother, I don't know). The...
