what cartridge have I got? by
congokid
I bought my Linn Sondek around 1987, with Basik arm and whatever
cartridge came with it. Now I need to buy a phono stage to enable me to
hear it through my Panasonic home entertainment system (OK, it's a bit
of a mismatch - I sold the rest of my lovely system to make room for
this but couldn't bear to part with the Linn and all my vinyl).
The problem is that I don't have any of the paperwork...

Spiked Floorstanding Speakers by
Cuthbert Poncenby-Smyth
I have a pair of Mordaunt Short floorstanders with the spikes that
came with them. The problem I have is that the coned shape of the
spike, despite them piercing the carpet and touching the floor when I
press down on the speaker, cause them to rise back up and become
wobbly. I need thinner straight spikes that will pierce without
lifting back as the carpet is quite thick. Does anyone know where...

What kind of sound quality can I expect from a Sony receiver? by
[email protected]
Circumstances (financial, domestic harmony etc) are forcing me to
change my kit. I currently use a PC source for my music, I have a
Rotel processor and 5 channel power amp. I listen through Stax
headphones and Dynaudio Contour speakers for the front and Audiences
for surround. I guess I'm not a purist, because I like to listen in
pseudo suround (Pro Logic 2).
I have just sold the processor and...

eBay cheaper than a skip?? by
Keith G
I have just listed a pair of speaker cabinets cut for Lowthers:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=017&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&viewitem=&item=270097810518&rd=1&rd=1
They are toss useless (beautifully made though) and I will happily hand them
over for a quid - there's absolutely no room for them in my garage/workshop
and it's cheaper than a skip or dragging them to the...

OK, as it's a bit quiet (again) I'll post a coupla pix of the latest
shenanigans....
Recently, I posted a series of pix of the GL72 I replinthed with some handy
offcuts - see 'VicSponge' 01 - 15 on my Show N Tell page:

Boom when powering on my passive subwoofer by
max graff
Hi guys,
I have been using my marvellous subbies with my DVD for a while. Until
recently I have got it connected so I can get some extra base from my
analog device running off the same amp. I have noticed when I power on
my subby I get a boom sound.
I am not sure what could be causing this. I have tried removing all
cables and tried powering on but the problem doesn't seem to go away.

Audio Transformer ... How? by
[email protected]
First I want to apologize for my poor english. I'm not english
speaker.
For space sake, I will describe my situation giving only details I
think are strictly necessary. If you need any more details please
don't hesitate to ask.
I've got an amplified signal from a 40watts stereo amplifier. I need
to feed this to a device that will only receive preamplified signal.
I can control the output of...

Replacing the ProJect 8.6 tonearm cable by
max graff
Hi guys,
Another newbie question. I have serious doubts the factory fitted
cables that come connected to the Project turntable are any good.
For starters if I play a couple of reference tracks on my Rotel CD
player fitted with some mid-range Taralabs cables and repeat the same
on my turntable I notice a significant loss in detail. I am using the
same Taralab cables from my NAD PP2 phonostage to...

Otherwise, I've been using Dayton Audio PT-2 at about 30 quid. Sounds
very nice to my ears.

A psychologist's view of Hi-Fi fetishism by
9/11 Wasn't Real
Many of us are becoming increasingly aware of those audiophiles who
show an extraordinary preoccupation with hi-fi equipment for its own
sake. Contributors to as well as readers of HFN/RR have expressed
irritation with this so-called lunatic fringe, which has been
repeatedly criticized for being out of touch with reality.
The symptoms of this preoccupation are well known: an inclination...

Further room measurements by
Serge Auckland
Following Don's very helpful reply, I redid the RT60 measurements in my room
using his method with filtered white noise and Audicy (Cool Edit).
The results are now much more what my ears tell me:- RT60 at 125Hz 0.6 sec,
RT60 at 4kHz 0.2-0.3 secs. (difficult to tell exactly)
IEC standard is 0.3-0.65 secs at LF.
I've looked into what went wrong earlier using the unfamiliar software. I
made...

The Plinthses In The Tower....?? by

OK, as mentioned/theatened elsewhere/earlier, I have made two recordings,
one from each of these decks, exactly as per this pic:
http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/Parvo-08.JPG
The decks are effectively identical, the very same cartridge was used on
each deck and no controls were changed - all that was moved was the
headshell, record and connection leads. Recording was via my Pioneer...

Acoustic Gramophone, or, haven't we come a long way by
Serge Auckland
As a break from worrying about my listening room acoustics, I had a play
with the 1920s acoustic gramophone I recently got down from my loft.
This has a Swiss Paillard turntable, but there are no other manufacturer's
marks on the box, except for ALBA on the pick-up.
It runs well to speed, and the arm is rather remarkable for its build
quality. The horizontal bearing has no perceptible play...

'buzzing' amp - worth fixing? by
AP
Just got a Sherwood receiver (DAS RX-206ORDS) - quite nice, sounds
excellent - flawless - until it's been playing for around 45 mins, at which
point a buzzing begins inside the box. It's loud enough to be annoying.
Seems to be very localised - this is a ten year old beastie, all bits & bobs
rather than circuit boards - and my instinct is that it's one component in
there that's gone dodgy....

6 ohms + 8 ohms off 6 ohm amp? by
AP
I've just got a system with outputs for one pair of speakers - 6 ohm. I also
have a pair of speakers that I used to use with my old four-output system -
8 ohm - and a switch on its way. Can I run the 6 ohm pair and the 8 ohm pair
off the one pair of outputs through the switch, or will everything go pair
shaped? Sorry. Also thanks.

Digital to digital recording by

Creative have a range of SoundBlaster that connect via USB and have both
digital in and out.
They also come with editing software and are not too expensive, and they
sound infinitely superior to any sound card.
