Blu Ray vs. HD-DVD (Keith- read this) by
Trevor Wilson
Further to an earlier discussion, some information has just come to hand.
HD-DVD backers claim to have sold around 50,000 machines, worldwide. Sony
claims to have sold more than 1 million Blu Ray machines (most in the guise
of Playstations).
Additionally and possibly more importantly. Blockbuster has announced that
it will no longer stock HD-DVD software. They will be concentrating on Blu...

System lacking midrange. by
Bion
I have a Cambridge Audio 540R receiver and wharfedale 9.1 speakers,
using a Macbook for audio source and a separate dvd player for movies.
It sounds great... with the right songs. Jazz and acoustic blues sounds
wonderful, but pop/rock or anything with vocals with busy instruments,
particularly treble, and things start to sound not so good. The vocals
tend to sit in the background, overpowered by...

Just got an email from Maplin to say they are out of stock of their one and

Where else can I get something similar in the UK?

Roberts R505 battery mod by
Paul D.Smith
FYI, in case anyone needs this...
An R505 can be adapted to take the Roberts 6xC-cell pack as follows.
- Unscrew and remove all innards
- Unbolt the brown battery U mountings
- Carefully bend and break off the end stops that are nearest the case side
- Rebuild the radio.
A PP9 will now be a little loose in the case but the 6xC-cell just fits.

Dubbing Reel-to-Reel to CD by
Adrian
Can someone advise me please? I plan to copy some very old (38 years)
open reel tapes to CD. I have an aging Sony TC366 Open Reel Recorder
and a Dell Latitude D810 Notebook.
Somehow I thought this would be easy!! :-) However, at present the
notebook does not recognize an analogue signal at the line in.
Moreover, the only piece of software that seems to have an audio
record option is Windows...

UD-10 USB Audio Converter by
richard
Hi,
I'm thinking about setting up a PC based audio system and looking at a
way to get something that provides a listenable sound.
I'm intending to rip most of my CDs to FLAC to play on it. (And its
'most' of my CDs because over the years I've ended up buying a few
turkeys.)
I've got an old Denon amp and I've had a look on eBay and there seem to
be loads of fairly decent speakers, Mission,...

shot noise by
Ian Bell
A while ago we were discussiig theoretical and actual measured noise in the
first stage of a preamp. RDH suggests the equivalent input noise resistance
for a triode is about 2.5/gm. Patrick noted he had never seen noise
anywhere near as low as this.
I have just read this article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valve_audio_amplifier_-_technical
which suggests the 2.5/gm only applies at...

It's just ridiculous that kit so ugly
and so old (it's from 1960) should sound so good.
Yep, my Dynacos from that era still sound just about as good as anything
else I've heard!

Tube current and Noise by
Ian Bell
In designing a semiconductor preamp you usually aim for a low collector
current in the first stage as one method of minimising noise.
What is the situation for tubes? RDH talks about triode input noise being
proportional to 1/gm but does not mention any dependency on anode current.
I would have expected shot noise to be pretty much proportional to anode
current.

Intelligence and RIAA by
Andre Jute
Seeing all the posts about RIAA filters, I can only say I hope none of
the participants passed on the gene of obsessive shortsightedness that
draws audiophiles into the wastelands of RIAA. Vinyl discs are bad
enough when good clean CD's are available, but RIAA is a bodge to
correct another bodge. Two bodges don't make it right.

uses only CD and so has time for more music

QUESTION -- Nakamichi STASIS Receiver by
EADGBE
I have found a Nakamichi TA-4A receiver in good condition for sale
locally. This was Nakamichi's top-of-the-line receiver, using STASIS
technology licensed from Threshold. I am thinking of using this
receiver in my kids' billiard room as part of a secondary system.
I am curious about the type of amp that is inside the TA-4A. I would
be interested to hear about the STASIS amplification method,...

QUESTION -- For Nakamichi Experts by
EADGBE
I have two different Nakamichi BX-300 cassette decks. One was made in
1984, and the other one was made in 1986.
While I had the 1984 deck opened up to do some repair work, I opened
the 1986 BX-300 to take a look at a part number. Looking inside the
1986 deck, I immediately noticed an "extra" PC board mounted on the
right side near the back. According to the service manual, this
"extra" PC...
