personal CD player wanted by sally H
I should like a good quality straightforward personal CD player to replace another good quality 5 year old one which has just broken. Most of the ones available now have mp3 and all sorts of complicated things added to them, so should be grateful for any recommendations. Most of the music listened to is classical. Thanks.

Box size and efficiency by doki
I'm considering getting some new speakers for my car, and they're generally rated at around 90dB/w/m sensitivity, but none of them state the size of the box they achieved this in. As it's in a car, I'm likely to be working with a box that's about 6x6x3 inches, and made of plastic, and a 5" driver at the bottom of the door, with tweeters somewhere up on the dash. Are there any quick "rule of...

Audio Alopecia...?? by Keith G
Well, following all the MOSFET talk elsewhere I have now got hold of this mutha (11kg pre + 25kg power = 36kg all up): http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/Technics.JPG ....which claims a 'Class AA' (Technics term) MOS/Bi hybridity...??? In it's own way it is quite stunning and staggeringly well-built (£3K back in 1999)! Anyway, I have wired *2 pairs* of Lowther 'horns' to it and I believe...

The old DAB vs. FM argument.... by Keith G
....goes straight out of the window at the press of a button on my kit - *if* imaging is as important to you as it is to me.... When I press the button on the remote control (on my setup) to change from DAB to select the recently-reinstalled FM tuner, the image (R3 male vocal) *snaps* to the middle like someone's cut some highly-stressed elastic restraints on either side of it!! (Add to...

Cheap Chinese amps again.... by Keith G
Ever since the cheap, Chinese amps started appearing on eBay there has been a widespread condemnation of them for *alleged* poor quality - poor transformers in particular. (Obvious, when you think of it....??) Well, my own method (whenever feasible) is to ignore opinion/reviews/gossip/hearsay and find out for myself and my conclusion, based on my own experience of 4 Chinese amps, is that...

sound cassette to computer connection by salterre
I need help, I have a Kenwood UD-505 stereo system and I would like to transfer music from LPs and Cassettes to the computer Hard Disk or CDs. The problem is that the Kenwood system only has wiring output connections for the speakers. It has no RCA outputs. Could somebody give me some advice on how I can get the signals from the stereo system to the computer?

Play protected MP4 tracks on Hifidelio/Squeezebox by Simon Heather
If you want to play your protected MP4 music files from iTunes on your Hifidelio (or other MP4 music device such as Squeezebox) then you can now use QTFairUse6 to convert them to regular MP4 music files (use Google to find the download). This program currently works with the latest iTunes 7.1.1 version. - Simon.

Alternative to Bose WAVE® music system? by Mark
I'm looking for an easily carried CD player that can be moved from room-to-room & will reproduce classical music to a good standard. Am happy to spend for something good (we already have cheap radio/CD players in the house). The Bose WAVE system looks ideal, but I'm aware of many criticisms. Any suggestions of something else that can simply be unplugged and moved? Needs built-in speakers and not...

Car stereo power outputs. by Dave Plowman (News)
I've just treated myself to a new car radio for the old Rover. The previous one wasn't that old, but was cassette and I wanted CD. Both are 4 amp types. The older Panasonic claims 4 x 14W into 4 ohms - 4 x 35W peak. The new Blaupunkt claims 4 x 18W at 1% distortion and 4 x 50W peak. So I wasn't expecting *that* much differerence in maximum level at acceptable distortion, but in fact I'd guess...

A night and day difference by Don Pearce
I was up and working at three this morning, and things seemed very quiet - I was playing some music and it didn't sound the way it usually does, so I reckoned it must be the ambience. Well, I recorded a bit of the background noise, then did it again just now at 9. am to see the difference. And here it is http://81.174.169.10/odds/nightday.gif At night there is less noise the whole way up the...
