Sub woofer usefull in HiFi system? by Cessna172
I have tried many different speakers over the years, but if I go too big in the speaker for bass response, the overall sound suffers in my small lounge. The Kef IQ5 I now have seem to suit my room very well. The bass is tight and punchy, but certainly loses grunt when trying to reproduce the deep notes from instruments like organs. Would a subwoofer be a good idea to fill that gap? If so,...

Sub-£1k SACD player recommendations? by Alex
Anyone got any ideas about a £1000-or-under SACD player I could pair with my Stax 3030 earspeaker system? I've noted various fine units from Marantz and Denon but wonder if there's some more esoteric players I'm not considering. In fact nearer to £800 would be better. At the moment I'm using a fairly mid-fi Sony m/ch SACD player with decent interconnects, but suspect the Stax could do a lot...

Therefore, Jute has stipulated that I spoke in ignorance, not malice.

Krueger vs. Pinkerton - Peers or not? by Margaret von B.
It is interesting to note that Mr. Krueger has repeatedly claimed that he and Mr. Pinkerton are "peers". OTOH, Mr. Pinkerton seems to think that this could not be further from the truth. Pinkerton seems to base his claims on his superior education and the organizations he's been associated with during his career. Indeed this seems to make sense since Krueger seems to have little formal...

DAB radio advice - Evoke Tempus and wireless headphones? by John Smith
Hi, My Mum is hard of hearing but loves listening to the radio at night... so I am thinking of buying her an EVOKE Tempus DAB radio for Chrismtmas which are about £90. I also want to buy her a pair of wireless headphones so she can listen to said radio in bed without disturbing the neighbours. I had a pair of analogue Phillips ones a few years ago and they hissed so much I took them back....

Attn bugbear and others. DAB model update ... by Arfa Daily
OK. Starting a new thread on this. I 'phoned my buddy in the shop, as I promised, and got to speak to the son who works in there, and is an audiophile type, who spends lots on high-end gear, so in general, I trust what he says. It's only a small specialist shop, so they depend a lot on repeat, and family ' next generation ' business, so have to get it right. The ones that they stopped...

portable digital radio for headphone use? by bugbear
My partners wants a digital radio for use in her workplace office. Small size would be helpful, since her (private) office is very small, and desk space at a premium. Listening will be done 95% of the time with an ear piece or head phones, so box construction and loud speaker

OK, I'm baffled... by Keith G
Too tight to pay the extra hundred bucks for 'quick' delivery I waited about 6 weeks for my Bez amp to arrive: http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/bez/bezt3b-3.htm My patience was rewarded by the volume control going tits up after only 3 or 4 days, so I contacted Bang Kmi Chek, the eBay Seller (3 months warranty on this) who put an Alps replacement in the post (allegedly) and used it with a...

Selling Fragile (Audio) Equipment on Ebay by Dave
Hi, Does anyone here have experience with selling fragile audio on Ebay? I am about to list an Arcam CD92 CD Player, but shipping considerations are putting me off- the thought of the box being thrown or dropped sends shivers down my spine! Is it a case of buyer collect, or simply add plenty of postage insurance? Any do's and don'ts are welcome :-)

Audio systems that capture the timbre of instruments by Andy Evans
Whatever any theories about 'absolute fidelity' say or don't say, back in the real world some things about systems stand out - with some it's bass, treble or mids, others it's transparency and detail, and so forth. I'm one of those guys who's always been very sensitive to the timbre of acoustic instruments, having been a musician for many years, and this would apply to anyone that regularly hears...
