Bought Valve Amp. Need Speakers & CD Player by SteveAl
I'm 'doing up' my office. Part of the deal with my wife is that I can install a music system and therefore keep out of the living room even more... The last time I ventured into 'Hi-Fi' I bought an AVI CD/amp with Ruark Talisman speakers. This has served us well for 10 or so years (and continues to do so in the lounge). I got all enthused about a pleasant, low key system to play mainly accoustic...

Listening to radioio streams on a Hifidelio by Simon Heather
I have now managed to access the radioio internet radio streams from my Hifidelio - although some of the radioio streams appear under the internet radio listings they do not seem to work. What I did was use my Squeezebox to access the radioioBeat stream and then make a note of the URL - in this case it is http://radioio.sc.llnwd.net:8615 and entered it as a custom station. You need to make...

Speaker cable selection issue by Alan C Clark
I wonder if anyone would provide advice on speaker cable selection. I have an Arcam amp connected to Kef Q35 speaker via Cable Talk 3.1 Biwire cable. Following a move round I need to buy some cable which I can run under the carpet and bend round corners without causing a huge ridge in the carpet. The current bi-wire cable is not going to fit the bill. Hence, can anyone recommend a suitably...

bi-wire config question by aid
I have a Musical Fidelity A5 cd player and A5 intergrated amp, I have it bi-wired to a pair of Acoustic Energy AE120 speakers (tri-wireable), my question is this:- My speakers are three way, so at the moment I have the MF and HF bridged together & the LF is seperate, is this correct? Or I should I have the MF AND LF bridged together & the HF seperate? I'm using Chord Chorus interconnects and...

Need new amplifier and speakers by M Jones
Hi all, I have a budget of just over £1000.00 to spend on an amplifier and speakers. I listen to lots of different types of music. What amp and speakers should I go for in this price range? I would ideally like an integrated amplifier and floorstanding speakers. I may want to add surround speakers for home cinema in the future so I think I should bear that in mind. I haven't bought any...

Firewood Horns Vs. Tannoys by Keith G
Just in case anyone is interested..... A conversation with one here had me looking at Ebay for a pair of Tannoy 609s and I found a pair with only a couple of hours to go (as you do..) - I grabbed them for a *midweek bargain price* to compare them and, ultimately, rip the drivers out of them for a speaker project. (Believe me, it ain't the drivers muchachos - it's the cabinets...) Well, for...

FAO Keith G by Fleetie
Hi Keith. Sorry for the delay in responding but regarding your kind offer to let me basically have that 'scope, I've only just got around to looking on maps.google.co.uk to find out where TF St Neots is, and unfortunately, it's too far to ask my friend to drive me really. She probably would if I asked her nicely but it wouldn't be fair. So thank-you so much for that kind offer, but I suggest...

Finding a rotary switch for a stepped attenuator by [email protected]
Hi Does anyone know where I can source a good quality rotary switch (2 pole and 20 ways) to make a stepped attenuator?? I've looked at previous posts reccommending Blore Edwards but I can't seem to find them on the web....maybe they're not trading anymore?? Farnell and RS gave me no joy. I've got a home made amp and I'm currently using a conductive plastic

Firewood Horns Feedback (long) by Keith G
If you are sick of hearing about Firewood Horns read no further. One or two (or four?) here have heard my Firewood Horns (sadly, with the *crunchy* Fostex drivers in the Jerichos - now cured with 200 quid's worth of Visatons) and, so far, everyone has been (at least) very polite about them!! :-) Here are a couple of 'testimonials' (cut & pasted):

arcam advice please by [email protected]
A couple of years ago I heard a Arcam integrated amp set up with my pioneer cd deck and speakers. The sound was great to my ears. Now two years on I cannot remember which arcam amp I heard and was thinking of buying one on ebay and then having a visit to Wilmslow audio for a test. Cannot remember which speakers they were matched too either. Any thoughts on an ebay purchase and which Arcam amp...

Digital volume control question.... by Keith G
A week or two ago I bought a little cheapo ss amplifier from Argos for fun/summer/curiosity/all day long radio, MP3s &c. and wuz so taken with it I bought a couple more (similarly cheap) components from the same range to go with it: http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/outbreak.JPG (OK, I admit it - I was driven by the 3-way, multi-purpose remote control!! :-)

Connections question? by Andy Hewitt
I have have a couple of questions regarding cabling and connections. At the risk of getting some daft and conflicting answers, here goes... First, I've bought an old Technics SL-1800 off eBay, which I'm very happy with, but I was wondering if it's desirable/possible to upgrade the interconnect cable. This is a hard wired cable on this, as seems to be the way with turntables, but the one on there...

silicon damping fluid by Anthony Roskilly
Hi All, thanks for the info on the Marantz TT-130. I now need to get hold of some silicon damping fluid, can anyone out there tell me where to obtain some of this without paying enough to feed a family for a week? So far I've found 10cc of the fluid for about £13 incl postage which seems a little expensive. Thanks in anticipation Tony

req adv: soundcard with dedicated headphone support by tg
I'm looking for a soundcard that comes with it's own dedicated headphone connection point, either internal or external, it doesn't matter. Note: I know I can plug headphones into a cards sound output but that's not what I want. What I need is a soundcard that will provide headphone audio independent of any windows settings or speaker output. Thanks for any pointers.

Service manual for Analogue Audio 'Bellini' pre amplifier by Robert Wilson
Hi folks, I am after a service manual for an Analogue Audio 'Bellini' as my mates machine is popping mains fuses. I know it's more than likely one of the mains TX's that have gone short in the primary, but I would like the luxury of the service manual. Any help appreciated. Cheers, Rob.

Capacitor search by Mike Gilmour
I'm hunting a replacement power supply capacitor for a Fourier OTL amplifier. Its a Rubycon 1200uF 360v with radial 10mm spaced connection, width 35mm, height 85m but amp could accommodate higher.. This cap has been discontinued by Rubycon, (I think it was originally designed for photo flash work ) Any one know where I can source an equivalent? TIA, Mike

HDCD re-encoding by Glenn Richards
Been having a play around with some HDCD discs (my Arcam DV-79 will decode HDCD). With the HDCD filter in place they do sound considerably better than without (but it has to be said, no better than a normal CD that hasn't been compressed to buggery). Comparisons done with analogue out from DVD player (which has HDCD decoding) against DAC on amplifier (Arcam AVR-250). With non-HDCD discs...
