Two sets of speakers - ohm ratings by
Nick Tatham
I have a Cambridge Audio A1mk3SE amp. It says it takes speakers from 6 ohm
to 16 ohm. I have two sets of 8 ohm speakers.
I'd like to use either or both sets. (Well actually probably just both).
Can I use a switch box such as Maplin CN42? This talks about a 4 ohm
minimum load - presumably what you get from 2x 8 ohms in parallel. That
would be below the 6 ohm rating. Does this mean I can't use...

Reset "PROTECT" on Onkyo TX-SV434 receiver? by
Serial # 19781010
The left speaker wires on my Onkyo TX-SV434 receiver were shorted out
while the unit was under power (don't ask, it involves kids). There
was a spark at the wire terminus and the receiver went dead
(sound-wise). The display said "PROTECT" which I know is the protect
mode for Onkyo. I searched around on the Net for reset info, but
nothing was immediately apparent.
Two tactics that I found on...

Tiny Drive Belts R Us? by
Keith G
Anybody know a supplier of tiny drive belts? I've just fettled a linear
tracker and have had to use an ordinary elastic band to replace a tiny
little 'tired' drive belt. It works fine but may not last (obviously) - the
proper belt is not much bigger than a pound coin, as in this pic next to the
little motor:

Jeez, is this mutha built? The...

Using wireless headphones to stream PC audio to a stereo by
Steve
Hi,
I'd like to stream whatever is playing on my PC to my stereo which is in
another room about 8 meters away. I have a set of wireless headphones which
work perfectly in the other room.
Can I strip the headphones and wire them up to my stereo? There must be
some speaker cable going to each ear in the headphones, so perhaps I could
take these wires and turn them into RCA connectors for the...

webpage summarising comments on 'cable sounds' by
Jim Lesurf
I have now uploaded new versions of the pages in question, and have tried
to take into account some of the suggestions/comments people have made.
Please note, though, that one page is just meant as a summary, and the
other is really just intended to deal with resistance. :-)
Perhaps at some point I should do another page on the topic of tests whose
outcome could help resolve the issue - ahem...

hi-fi versus AV- why? by
Easynews
Hi folks,
I've posted a similar message on uk.media.home.cinema and thought I'd see
what your opinion was, looking at it from the other side!
I have been trying for some time to look for an AV amp which will still give
me high quality stereo hi-fi sound, as I will always be listening to music a
lot more than watching films. It is frustrating to hear that most (all?) AV
amps don't give the...

KEF Q Compact? by
Wally
How does the panel rate the KEF Q Compact (currently being flogged by Richer
Sounds and various others for 200 quid)? It would seem to be a version of
the Q1 - same cabinet style, similar size. About the only main distinction
would seem to be a top end of 27KHz, rather than the current model's 40KHz.
A lot seems to be said about the imaging and dispersion of the small Q
speakers, but what are...

amplifier advice by
fafner
Hey Everyone...and Merry Xmas.
I have a Creek 4040 amplifier that seems to have just died on me. It
gave me very good service over many years but clearly I now need to
replace it. I used it to drive a very old Mission CD Player and B&W
floorstanding 603 speakers - mainly for listening to classical music.
Could anyone suggest a post Xmas sale bargain that I ought to snap-up?
Preferably under...

webpage summarising comments on 'cable sounds' by
Jim Lesurf
The topic of 'cable sounds' keeps cropping up on this newsgroup. Each time
it does I tend to find that I am repeating comments I have made on previous
occasions. Rather than go on doing this, I decided it would be easier to
summarise the main points on a webpage which could be referenced when
appropriate.
So I've now added a couple of new pages to the 'Audio Misc' collection (URL
below). One...

Which? Audio tests by
Rob
I wrote to them recently concerning their testing procedure for audio
electronics. I don't subscribe, although I occasionally leaf through
library copies when I'm supposed to be working :-)
In answer to the Q: do you use blind testing and matched levels, she
said 'yes'. However, she went on to say that it's not always needed
because, as they're completely independent, there is nothing to...

Going over to the dark side by
andy
Holidays coming and spending too much time chatting. One topic that
came up I thought might make an interesting thread (but what do I know
my last one got no responses) and exercise the memory a bit. What was
the first article or review you read that metaphorically punched you on
the nose and made you realise that the mainstream audio press might be
foresaking the path of light and truth and...

Seeking advice on system by
Tony Eva
I'm looking for a small system for radio and music in the kitchen.
Nothing flash or expensive, but a few specific requirements are making
it hard to find:
- only CD and radio required, no cassette needed
- must have DAB and FM tuner
- at least one aux/line in (want to add a network media player later)
- CD *must* be horizontal, front loading, not vertical or top loading
- under £200 all-in...

Headphones for MP3 player? by
Wally
Got me one o' them, thar Eyum-pee-three playahs! I can't stand the little
earbud things - too uncomfortable and tend to fall out. I prefer the
lightweight headphone style ones with the band going round the back of the
neck.
I currently have a pair of the latter, which came with a cheapie CD walkman
(and cost a total of 15 quid in Asda). They're okay, but I want a second
pair of phones (leave one...
