Quad ESLs - 57 or 63? Pinkerton's lies debunked by Eiron
Andre Jute wrote: I don't have to go to the Quad site to know Pinko is wrong again. I bought a pair of ESL57 in 1963 with the thousand pound sterling prize put up by an accounting firm for doing the impossible (get 100% at matriculation for both the bookkeeping and math papers--I spent the rest on a Jaguar for my 18th birthday. Quad ESLs - 57 or 63? Pinkerton's lies debunked by Phil Allison
"Andre Jute" ... The Quad Electrostatic was on sale in 1957 - and I have numerous original Quad brochures from that time which clearly show that it was on sale in 1957. It also appears in the HiFi Year Book of 1958 , this being the earliest one I have. I don't know where your 1966 date came from but it isn't

(Un)sound problem by Bruce
I need some advice and opinion, please. I have decided to run my TV sound through my KEF speakers via a Pioneer amplifier. I've used standard RCA phono cables from the Line Out (L & R) on the TV into the (now redundant) tapedeck inputs on the amp. Note that there is no AUX input on the amplifier. The sound quality is poor - muffled and muted, compared with say, the sound quality from the CD or...

Quad ESLs - 57 or 63? by Patrick Turner
Andre Jute wrote: Peter Walker's ES:57 is simply the best-sounding loudspeaker ever made. Anyone who doesn't agree has some kind of odd requirement or prejudice, which should be stated when reporting hearsay. There is no problem in making up a pair. They are numbered in sequence. Many were sold in pairs originally. In any event, they were built to ferocious quality control so...

Quad ESL (57) experience in 1963 by Malcolm Stewart
Reading other's posts about these speakers has reminded me of a listening experience I and a few others had way back in 1963. We'd managed to get our hands on two ESLs, and were keen to try them in stereo. Our pickup was a Decca FFSS and our amplifiers were matched. Initially, we were a little disappointed that these fabled loudspeakers didn't knock our socks off, but we then found that if we...

Roksan Attessa still competitive..? by Chris Eilbeck
Paul Dormer writes: Anybody got an opinion on how well the Attessa CD player compares to more modern players? I've seen one for sale, I think it's the original version - it's grey, and the seller mentions Roksan replacing a push button for the lid mechanism. What would be a fair price for one? TIA Dunno how it compares to other players you can get nowadays but...

24/96 samples by Silk
Does anyone know where I can download some sample tunes at 24bit/96KHz resolution? All my searches have drawn a blank. I'm aware they would be very large files, but I have the bandwidth. I'm looking for anything Rock/Blues/Jazz/Reggae etc. I'd like to get an idea of the quality I could expect from my Audiophile 24/96 soundcard. Thanks in advance.

Artifacts by Dave
I am new to this game and as a result have little knowledge of how some audio programs word but I have just started using Cool Edit 2000 to transfer some old vinyl and 78s to CD. When I have the audio onto my PC I use some of "cleaning" tools to remove clicks and pops etc. I have used some settings that I found on a web site to get me started but when I have completed the job, whilst I end up...

Cables again... by Dave Plowman (News)
Some well respected pro audio types were invited to a demonstration of a new make of 'XLR' cable - ie those used for balanced mic or line level signals. The maker is Vovex. Over a 3.5 metre length, all 5 people involved said they heard a substantial improvement over other 'standard' XLR cables - of many makes. Wasn't a true DBT, but said to be blind.

Phase oddity on Fischer Haydn symphonies by Pat Wallace
Anyone out there got the Adam Fischer / Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra complete Haydn symphonies? How do #101 and #103 sound to you? To me they're out of phase! Whether it's some UHJ oddity (these are Nimbus recordings) or an engineering disaster, I can't tell, but they definitely sound much better if I reverse the leads to one speaker. Perhaps they come to life in some magic way if you've...

WTD: Manual for Sony STR-D515 Amplifier by Gareth Robert Halfacree
'Lo, all. I'm looking for a user manual for a Sony STR-D515 surround-sound amplifier. A dejagoogle brings up nothing of note, nor does a web search (unless I *want* to pay $10 to a random person in Japan for a PDF). If anyone has a copy they wouldn't mind lending, photocopying, scanning and/or making available for viewing I'd be much appreciative. Follow-ups set to uk.media.home-cinema.

Arcam 8SE Replacement by [email protected]
Well, my trusty 7 year old Arcam 8SE has just decided to give up the ghost. The local dealer have called Arcam who say it will probably need a new laser. Cost £200 quid. Don't have quite the same budget as wehn I bought the 8SE. What do people reckon? Pay the 200 quid? Or will I get something as good for 200-300 quid these days? Thanks

expressimo counterweight for RB300 problem by Palle M. Pedersen
I've just bought an Expressimo counterweight for my 1½ year old Rega P3 turntable. I can't mount it on the RB300 stub, the stub only get halfway throug the hole in the counterweight. I can't even get it off again. I'm somewhat afraid to damage the arm bearings using to much "violence". (I have loosened the small screew in the top, so thats not the problem). The company dosn't respont to...
