My amplifier "allows you to vary the volume from 0 (silence) to 79

this adjustment to actual listening levels?
As Andy has said, with some difficulty. :-)

Question by
andy
With difficulty. Silence is -infinity dB and full power is, say, 110 dB
at 1 metre depending on your amplifier and speakers. Clearly this does
not fit your 40dB range.
I presume you want an estimate without simply measuring?
If you ignore the quiet end and believe the 40dB range then you need to
know how loud your speakers are when your amplifier is flat out. If
your speaker specification...

The Opposite Of A 10db Pad by
Charles H. Riggs, III
Dear fellow audiophiles,
I'm looking for the opposite of a 10db pad for my unidirectional ECM-66B
lavalier mike. Its output turns out to be quite a bit lower than is ideal
for the Edirol R-1 recorder's mic input, averaging about 10db lower than is
ideal for good SN/R, even with the R-1's input volume set to maximum!
Don't know whether such an animal exists, but I figured this would be...

Toslink optical cable by
Malcolm Stewart
Can anyone recommend a low loss optical cable for getting the SPDIF signal
from my Freeview receiver to my PC's soundcard?
Taking a 5m cable straight across the floor works fine, but is obviously a
trip hazard. Routing the cable around the room edges requires another 5m
length, and it's very obvious that the light o/p from the cable has
decreased, and then there's no o/p from the soundcard.

reel to reel by
ken( 68)
Am not an hi-fi enthusiast, but just been given 100 pre-recorded
classical music reel to reel tapes scotch over the hour each plus about
6x 2500ft unused tape, and a Tandberg tape deck 3500X without an
amplifier.Haven't got a clue if they would be useful to anyone. Never
see the point of recording music seeing as how there is so much
available on radio/tv.e.g. Classic FM.

Why do you think you want to be a sound engineer as your profession?
What experience do you have?
What benefits do you believe you will get from having a degree, that
you won't learn by doing the job?
Do you think having a degree will help you get a job?
What do you think is the difference between a sound engineer and a
sound technician?

Any review of Arcam Solo? by
Karsten
Hi
I am looking for reviews of the new Arcam Solo.
I heard a rumour that it has been reviewed in Whats Hi-Fi.
Does anybody have this article and if yes, please would it be possible
to scan this page and email it to me? I have been looking at the local
library and magazine shop, but couldn't find this mag.
Link to other reviews of Solo would of cause also be warmly welcome.
Thanks very much in...
