What a watt, wot? by Keith G
All this SS vs. valve amplifier malarkey of late has led me to revisit my Technics SS power amp. Soundwise, on vinyl with valve pre's, it's very impressive (very 'grippy') if none too beguiling, but what does make me smile is the way that, at quite 'normal' sound levels (i.e more 'home alone' than 'sod 'em, we're double glazed...') Check the scale here first:

CD players to audition £200-£300 by Paul Groves
Hi, I'm looking to buy a new CD player soon, to replace my old (very cheap) Sony one, which finally seems to have stopped being able to play most of my CDs (yes I have tried cleaning the lens...). I have around £200-300 to spend, my requirements are fairly straightforward: 1) It must sound good (especially, but not soley with electronic dance music), and 2) it should ideally have optical out, so...

SD Acoustics OBS speakers by Multithreaded
I have just acquired a pair of these from a friend. The tweeters are blown, so I need replacements. As the company is no longer in existence, can anyone kindly suggest an alternative source of replacement tweeters? -- Please use Reply-To address.

CD Player skipping by MrBitsy
My Roksan Kandy Mk3 player has started skipping during the first few minutes of many CD's. Anyone have any insight on this before I ship it back to Roksan? After about 2 mins of the first track, it plays fine to the end. -- MrBitsy

'Shallow' components? by Stimpy
Bit of advice needed... I'm looking to put a second system in my study but, for architectural reasons, the amp/cd needs to fit on a shelf only 260mm deep (i.e from front edge to the wall). I've looked at the Denon micro systems but they all seem to be 360mm deep, as is my old Cyrus 2 amp. Ideally I'd like something more than a 'boom box' but I'm running low on inspiration... Anyone got any...

PC to Hi Fi system and related Q's by Tumbleweed
First of all, I hope this is the right group to ask this Q, if it isn't would welcome advice on which is. Getting a new PC soon and would like to be able to store my CD's on that in some compressed format, and then play back via the HiFi, which is in a different room. Running cables between the two would be a royal PITA but could be done. Are there any wireless ways of doing this? What...

backing tracks advice? sorry if it's OT by vicky
i hope this isn't the wrong newsgroup to post this on, if it is, i'm sorry. i was wondering if any of you could advise me on backing tracks. I've recorded a couple for a singer i know, and he has said that there's a market in my area for specialist ones - he's into his soul music etc, a lot of which he can't get hold off, and knows some other singers in the same position. Anyway, he bascially...

Separates advice by James Davies
Hi, Have just moved out, got a job etc. so I've been researching into putting together a proper hi-fi rather than the Aiwi midi system I've got at the moment. Having had a look around I've decided that a Decoder/AMP system is probably my best bet as I want to hook up the TV, DVD player and (soon) the Sky+ box. I'm also quite interested in one of these SACD players, although I realise they're a...

Added a DAC to a cheap CD player - and got a result by Wally
Following the recent thread about adding a DAC to my Schneider DVD player, I went ahead and purchased a used Meridian 203 when it was offered by a subscriber here. It arrived this morning and it's been playing all day... My initial impressions are that there's much better detail and a huge improvement in bass (cleaner, deeper, more controlled). Individual instruments are easier to pick out and...

What happened to Jimmy Hughes? by David
Whatever happened to all the old hi-fi "tweeks" involving knots in interconnects, removing every 3rd screw from a case, putting your watch on upside-down etc. which were all supposed to bring audio nirvana that bit closer. Bes demo Ive seen recently was from Nordost selling Cd anti-stat and Pulsar Points using some Primare kit. The results were absolutely convincing - but, funnily enough, not...

s48 files by Wayne Clarke
Can anyone tell me if there's a player or any software which read .s48 audio files and save them as .wav or another format. MS Media Player will load and play .s48 files but I don't think I can do anything else with them. I think the .s48 format is a type of MP2 but I'm not sure. Any suggestions would be appreciated

new cd player by Tim S Kemp
From: "Tim S Kemp" Subject: Date: 04 January 2004 15:33 To make any meaningful contribution to Hi-Fi sound ALL sub woofers should only ever be used in a room from which every particle of air has been removed. There are is only one aspect to home audio that matters - and that is enjoyment. If your enjoyment comes from accuracy to the original (and most

help noob, chosing speakers and cable? by Thomas Andersson
Hi! I need to select speakers (2 pairs), nothing fancy, but I'd like to put my OLD Reciever to the best possible use. My Amp is a old Technics SA-200K (35W RMS/Channel 8 ohms, 2 separate stereo pairs) (speccs found at: http://www.vintagetechnics.com/receivers.htm). I'd like to learn suggested minimum and maximum wattage speakers to use (gonna have two pairs) and what effect to low or high...

Sony Speaker Cables - CMT CQ1 by Moorish
My parents have bought a Sony mini CD/Radio Unit with speakers but the cables are (riduclously) short. Problem is, typical Sony have made the connectors non-standard so Maplins et al won't do it without cutting the cable (which would invalidate the warranty!). I have spoke to the Sony parts Dept. who have put in a request for me for a long extension cable or alternatively the male/female...

Cambridge P50 help by nicolas
Hi again, Have had a Cambridge P50 amp for some years and decided to plug it in. Everything seems to work, except that the tape monitor seems weird; selecting the tape monitor, the balance as well as the volume do not work. The only way to control the volume when listening to a cassette is via the tape gain adjust knob in the back of the amp. Using the aux input for cassettes works fine. Is this...

My balls for earrings....?? by Keith G
Been piddling about recording an electronic piano to the hard disk - here's a sample of Swim's piano playing for those of you who have visited here but have not heard her play: http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/keith_g/show/Prelude%20No%201%20In%20C%20Major%2001.mp3 If anyone wants to post any encouragement here I'll show her the thread. new cd player by Neil
hi guys, I need some advice on the best way to hook up my new cd player. I have just purchased a NAD 521BEE to replace my old rotel 865, I am running the NAD through my yamaha DSP A2 and was wondering whether its better to connect it via the analogue outputs or the digital coax. If I connect via digital coax am I right in thinking that this will bypass the DAC on the NAD and use the DAC on...
