Magnitude of loudspeaker-room interaction by
John Phillips
Is a 2.7 dB left-right stereo imbalance reasonable for a loudspeaker-room
interaction in a nearly symmetrical room?
My last system needed no tweaking of the left-right balance control to
get a central image. However my current system needs a 2.7 dB shift in
the balance control. I have checked the source balance and swapped all
components (including leads) and the imbalance remains in either...

Big day for me (well, kind of...) by
Keith G
Well, here's the one a few of you have been waiting for!! :-)
A brief trip into ukrm yesterday has highlighted to me just how 'past it
all' I am with Usenet these days - I posted a 'swap ad' there and got the
usual (and not entirely unexpected) 'clever dick' responses from a couple of
silly little people showing off and trying to look clever! OK, no bother
(standard procedure), but the...

Cyrus amp repair in Bristol? by
Stimpy
My ancient Cyrus 2 has suddenly decided not to play anything through one
channel. Can anyone recommend a repair place in or around Bristol? Given
a choice I'd prefer someone who'll repair it 'in house' as opposed to send
it off for weeks
TIA

Recommendation retraction... by
Keith G
OK.
There are one or two here to whom I've recommended a *certain* valve amp
designer/parts supplier. Well, after reeling out enough rope to hang even
someone with the head the size of a planet (where TF did that come from....?
;-) I've got to say I hereby retract my recommendations.
The person in question (no names, no pack drill - those involved will know
*exactly* who I mean) is a nice...

Vinyl vindicated by
Iain M Churches
I recorded a jazz concert earlier this week.
A Swedish tenor saxophone player in the
band, a guy in his early 30's,
told me that he had just come back
from an auction in Berlin, where he had
bought a sealed vinyl pressing of
"DUKE ELLINGTON LIVE AT NEWPORT"
(the legendary concert recorded in 1956
where Paul Gonsalves played an astounding
27 chorus solo in "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue")

Valves Book by
Rob
I'm interested in building a valve pre and/or phono amp, and I was
wondering if anyone has a book recommendation. I'd like to know about
safety, circuit design and component choice. I have no training in this,
although the basic concepts come quite easily.
I've seen 'Building Valve Amplifiers' by Morgan Jones, seems to fit the
bill.
Thanks and b/w

A bit of fluff.... by
Keith G
Only a few moments ago I called Swim to the back door (she's outside rolling
around in mud, from what I can see of it) to tell her there's a cup o' tea
made. I've got a vastly spacey/sonorous Laurie Anderson on my triodes
playing and it sounds quite enchanting (and 'big').
At the back door (not allowed in, in her muddy boots) I asked 'What does
that sound like?' She listened for a moment and...

Crimson amplier modules by
Ken
I've got a couple of Crimson amplifier modules (each simply a PCB with
two T03 Toshiba output devices mounted on an aluminium heatsink)
marked *Crimson IV*. Does anyone know anything about these? They must
be about 20yrs old, but I'd like to use them in a home-built power
amp. I'm not sure about how to connect them (although could probably
work it out from the well-annotated boards) and what...

Dynavox VR70-E by
StuH
Hi, first post! Im new to valve amps and decided to purchase one of
the afore mentioned as a cheap intro (ok, have a play with), Im
pleasantly surprised with what it offers. Ive made a decent input
selector and had a good snoop around inside. My only prob is how do I
bias the valves?? Ive no instructions on this. There are test points
at the side of the valve, I tried to get a DCV (350mV), and...

Best 350 Quid I Ever Spent by
Fleetie
(Well apart from that Chinese prostitute with the watersports speciality.)
LOL! Erm, joking BTW. Dui bu qi.
My valve amp. Scrummy.
Sold a Rotel RB-03 today that I bought on Ebay and made a tiny profit off
it, so now I'm left with just the valve amp and the Cyrus 2 (which is also
for sale).
My valve amp sounds lovely. I am happy.

Sound of music "Vinyl and valves are very slowly beginning to make a comeback" by
Dave xxxx
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/4052123.stm
When did you last read anything about an MP3 music player that mentioned the
quality of the sound it reproduces?
You'll find size, storage capacity, the type of music files played, even the
pastel colour it's available in mentioned in advertisements and reviews, but
chances are that sound quality won't get a look in.
Which is odd, considering...

If you're into vinyl & classical then the R4 programme 'Cut Price Classics'
