Inside the cheapy chinky by
Keith G
For anyone who is interested, there are a few pix of the inside of one of
the new cheap, Chinese amps I have just bought.
http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/keith_g/chinese/chineseamp.htm
The second one arrived with a little rattle inside it which gave me the
excuse to whip the bottom off!
Anyway, I think they are surprisingly good for the price and would be quite
satisfied if I had built one...

Quad's dynamic speakers by
AKT
To avoid any misunderstanding, this post is not about ESL's but Quad's
dynamic speakers (21/22L?). A claim was made in another post that these
are "much better" than Spendor, Proac, Dynaudio. I was wondering if
people strongly agree or disagree with that.
I happen to own Spendor BC-1's and occasionally toy with the idea of
either a current Spendor or a Proac/Dynaudio model as possible...

Repair to faulty amp by
JustMe
Greetings,
I know there are a few here who are very well qualified with hifi (and
particularly amplifier) electronic design. Can you help?
I have an Alchemist Nexus amplifier which, when turned above a certain
volume, screeches loudly through the speaker output.
I believe that the amp is outputting DC - does that sound right?

Bronchial Broadcasting Corporation by

Did anybody listen to Performance on 3 just now and hear that clown emit
that loud *standout* cough just a few bars before the end of Simon Rattle's
Messiaen - Eclairs Sur L'Au-Dela, just as the music subsided into the few
closing notes of a superb morendo, following a great climaxial last
movement...???
I suppose that it was an obvious bloke was a change - I don't think I've

It lives, Igor!! by
Wally
Well, it looks like the Cyrus Two has been brought back from the dead.
Rather, once I had a look at the Cyrus One schematic, I managed to work out
that the blown components were all in the phono circuitry - the regulators
mentioned in the previous thread aren't used in the main amp, just for the
turntable inputs.
Since I don't have a turntable, and never will, I desoldered the diodes for
the...

More Rules from Arny by
Arny Krueger
Believe me, we are 100% discrete. We have our interests and you
have yours, hopefully, the two will share common ground.
On the agreed upon day, YOU (and others) will get a motel room as
we like doing this on neutral ground. We ask that you take a shower
before we arrive, we like squeaky clean people; we are.
Both my wife and I will spend in excess of an hour tending to your
cock in order...

Esoteric Audio Research by
Fleetie
So, what's TdP up to these days, in valve power amps?
ISTR his power amps were very highly regarded as being able to rival solid
state ones when it came to measurements.
I remember the 509 MKII and (I think) the 549 being reviewed in Hi-Fi Choice
in the late 80s or early 90s.
Is he still at it?

End to the valve amp dilemma....??? by
Keith G
Don't know why, but mention valve amps and a few here start foaming at the
mouth!! So, I've come up with a Cunning Plan to put and end to all this
interminable hoohah - goes like this:
"If you don't like valve amps, don't ****ing use them, then....."
:-)
(How's that - too simple?? Think I should do another one for vinyl.....???

Valve amp (preferably DIY) to drive apair of Wharfedale Diamond II's by
Andy Evans
BTW I'm still open minded about the possibility that vinyl and valves
have as-yet undiscovered attributes which distinguish them as superior
to digital and SS in some regard, although this is not what *current*
scientific knowledge tells us.
Designer Lynn Olsen makes a case for valves along these lines
http://www.nutshellhifi.com/ contains some interesting reading material

Valve amp (preferably DIY) to drive apair of Wharfedale Diamond II's by
Andy Evans
There is a distinct possibility that they're on retainers to valve and vinyl
companies in order to PROMOTE sales of their products
Calling somebody who is interested in valve equipment a 'cretin' is - as you
say - almost guaranteed to make such a person ignore the source of the 'advice'

Valve amp (preferably DIY) to drive apair of Wharfedale Diamond II's by
Andy Evans
It's a truism that a goodly proportion of musicians aren't overly fussed about
hifi, or indeed, the polishing (mastering) of their
creative output.
This isn't wrong, but it could do with some elaboration. Musicians are
extremely sensitive to sound, so it should not be thought that 'sound doesn't
matter to them' - that would be quite wrong. They may have less need to hear
music played back for a...

Interesting... analysis of "valve sound" by
mick
http://www.milbert.com/
"Tubes Vs. Transistors - Is There An Audible Difference?"
I don't want to rerun the old "valve versus transistor" arguments, but
this caught my eye as it is from the point of view of a recording engineer.
Apologies to those of you who have seen it before.

The man in the trade sez.... by
Keith G
Me mate Shiny Nigel wuz up again tonight and tells me that, in the shop he
works in (St Neots), sales of turntables currently beats sales of all CDPs,
Cassette Decks and MD Recorders combined....!!
(In fairness, I would say that they almost certainly sell more AV gear than
'hifi' these days.)
- Could have posted this in ukrav, but I'm sure no-one there needs
telling.... ;-)

"Upgrading" my amplifier - worth it? by
Keiron
I have a Rotel RSP1066 pre/pro with RB 985mk2 multi channel power amp
driving recently purchased (and quite brilliant) Dynaudio Contour
1.3mk2 main speakers. I also have Dynaudio 42 surrounds and centre.
In terms of fidelity, it's only music that interests me, movies are
not really my thing. I have a handful of SACD/DVDA discs but the best
part of 1000 stereo CDS and I have to say I really...
