Maynard articles on amplifiers in Electronics World by
Jim Lesurf
I have been collecting the series of articles on "Class-A Imagineering"
sic by Graham Maynard that have been appearing in Electronics World
magazine. Unfortunately our uni library didn't get the September issue of
the magazine, hence I have not been able to read 'part 4'. I have parts 1-3
and 5-6.
The series of articles contain a number of things which I think are
seriously misleading or...

New LPs by
Rob
Hi - does anyone have a favourite LP supplier for new rock/pop/chart stuff?
I'd like a copy of Norah Jones' 'Feels Like Home' and I've seen it for 14UKP
at http://www.101cd.com/Music/info.asp?id=6202558 - just wondering if
there's anywhere else, particularly UK, or a London shop.
As an aside (possibly) I have the CD, but I find the recording quality
terrible, compressed and flat, with...

CD player power supply suggestions (non-switching) by
Andy Evans
I'm just finishing off a basic power supply for a computer style CD player to
use as a stand-alone CD player with my hi-fi. I've built it in a computer PS
box, and so far it consists of two 20VA trannies, configured with 6v and 12v
secondaries. I've mounted a 78S05 and a 78S12 on heat sinks about 1.75 ins
square bolted to the case, and have used a bridge rectifier (100v, 3A) and
4,700uf cap for...

Is Hi-Fi delusional? by
Andy Evans
Contrary to what Stewart and others think, I've spent 35 years building and
tweaking hifi with one aim in mind - to make the hi-fi system sound like live
music. I didn't use measurements for this, I used my ears since I've been a
professional musician for most of my life. I also did all improvements
methodically, switching one thing at a time, and preferring a closer approach
to the original...

M.A. Bronze B2s + Denon DM31 ? by
Niall Rooney
Hi,
Interested in a Denon DM31. Thinking about speakers to go with it...
Has anyone got it set up with Monitor Audio Bronze B2s ?
Can the Denon handle the B2s? The Denon sounded a tad bright on
audition (but not overly so) and I expect the warmer feel of the B2s
would complement it well, and provide a natural, easy-to-listen-to
sound.. Can anyone testify to this ?
Thanks for comments.

Stewart. Do you realise.... by

That a very large percentage of microphones
used in digital recordings are valve microphones.
Oh dear :-((
Neumann 49, 50, 56, 64 and U87 are very
popular.
Don't believe me? of course you don't:-)

The Old Vinyl Versus CD Debate by

If you have comments, please post them here in uk.r.a , and don't bother
trying to post them to that site; you'll fail anyway.
Guess which one I am!

OT - Everything is perfect by

this fellow is over the moon. If he had made such an overture in this group he
would
be hanging from a lamp-post by now
This is my experience of special interest groups. I belong to the Leak group,
and Leakies are continually exchanging help on rebuilding amps - what parts and
part values, fault finding, valuing etc etc. As you say, members also say 'come
over and I'll take a look'. I don't see...

Vinyl is EVIL - official by
Stewart Pinkerton
Average playing time of an LP = 20 minutes
Rotational speed of an LP = 33.3 rpm
Hence, number of rotations = 666
Coincidence? :-)

45 vs.33 by
The EggKing
Stewart's last post made me think (extraordinary as that sounds); Does the
fact that a Vinyl single spins quicker mean the sound is more defined? As
you're covering more distance with the same amount of information you can
get better definition, i.e.. your higher frequencies appear longer on the
faster spinning record and are therefore easier to pick up.
Does this make sense and is it...

Help,my speaker is dying. by
Mr_Reece
I need some advice about my speakers please, I bought a set of quad 12L's
last December and all seemed fine but over the course of 8 months the
tweeter on the left channel was developing a crackle which eventually lead
to it cutting in and out. I sent them to quad servicing who said "Contacts
loose on crossover caused intermittent bass and treble" and promptly sorted
it free of charge. Once...

Good sound quality portable. by
Z
My line of work means I have to travel quite a bit.
I'm looking for a portable player to listen to music in B&B/hotel room
etc.
I'm fine for in the car
Most of my music is vinyl though I've quite a lot of classical and
trance CDs, also listen to radio quite a bit.
Thinking maybe something that plays MP3s as well as CD and radio, clock
would be handy as well.
Transportability is the major issue.

Is Hi-Fi delusional? by
Andy Evans
So what was it in that last post of Andy's that finally snapped the
patience of two of us, at the same moment, in the same way, and to
exactly the same effect?
Bear in mind that serious valve amp builders are equally exasperated with the
generalisations of those who are NOT up to date with valve technology and don't
inform themselves on a regular basis of circuits, valve characteristics...

Couple of amplifier Qs by
Rob
Hi - I wonder if anyone can shed some light on the operation of a Hitachi
HMA 7500 mk2 pre/power amp:
1. It can connect through two in/outputs - direct and 'condenser coupling'.
Anyone any idea what this coupling thing is?
2. There's a switch on the front of the power amp labelled 'BLT' - when it's
switched in the speakers switch off. 'BLT' is also marked on the LH direct
input on the power...
