FA: Mana Acoustics 2-Tier Amp rack by [email protected]
I have just put up on eBay a FA: Mana Acoustics 2-Tier Amp rack for £50 (retails for £470). No reserve. No longer needed it is nonetheless a lovely little table that yields benefits for highly (and not so highly!) microphonic devices that are placed upon it. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5736562900 Email me if you have any queries www\.mana.co.uk has more information and...

Neil Young prefers vinyl by JustMe
I think everyone here would agree that the concept behind "Straight-line" is to deliver the music as the artist intended, unsullied and uncoloured - an accurate reflection of the artist's work. Just reading an interview with Neil Young (HiFi Choice, January 2005), in which he states, "The analogue records always sounded better than anything else to me. But I compared the new vinyl versions,...

Recording Vinyl to CD/Thank you all by Tety Garf
Many thanks to you all for your kindness in trying to help me with this. After many attempts I've found a way to obtain CDs with tracks but this involves copying the Vinyl content into the HDD in All Synchro mode and then record it on CD/RW stilll in All Synchro mode: (notice that not even the smallest adjust is allowed here) and then copy this to CD/R. I've decided to go for the manual track...

Recording Vinyl to CD by Ronny Svensson
For a while I have been looking into alternatives for recording vinyl: 1. External USB soundcard (have a notebook running Win98) - haven't found any that seems stable on stock Win98 (at least not at reasonble cost). 2. Dedicated CR-R recorder. 3. MP3 player with line in and wav support. What is the best (suggestion on brands/models). Problem with 1 seems mostly to get it working without...

New Proteus X by Tony Thomas
Has anybody taken a look at the new Emu Proteus X? http://www.emu.com/products/product.asp?product=2233&category=631&maincategory=631 For $150, it looks like quite a bargain! It is more of a sample player than a complete sampler. The Emulator X is their sampler.

FS: Mana SoundStages by [email protected]
I am selling my Mana SoundStages, a discrete isolation platform. Unquestionably the very best system supports money can buy. Designed to be stackable, SoundStages can be added one under the other for additional isolation. This is the most effective means of isolating equipment there is and systems with large amounts of Mana in them have to be seen to be believed. Have a look at...

Cyrus Two - initial impressions by Wally
The Cyrus Two has been on since just after my last post, and here are my initial thoughts... I haven't done an A/B comparison with the valve amp, just swapped them and started listening to the Cyrus. As expected, it's way louder than the valve amp and has easily restored the oomph that has been missing. I haven't had it up more than about 4 (of 10) on the volume control, and that seems to be as...

Dynavox VR70-E again! by StuH
It seems that Mr G and myself are trodding the same path here! Its interesting that you've gone for a lower mA than me, Ive worked on the principle that there's 500V runnning around, and a total output of 26W (max for EL34's I think) giving a max current of 52mA. Working on the 70% rule thats 36mA = 360mV. Anyway, I too have got some of those mullard ECF82's but from a different seller on epay,...

5.1 by Steve W
Hi I've just bought an inexpensive DVD Player with 5.1 surround sound (Amazon.co.uk's £50 Starlogic). It plays a DVD with 5.1 sound just fine, with sound from all six speakers. So far so good. But when I play CDs or MP3 CD Roms it simply sends the right and left signals to the Front Left and Front Right speakers. Fair enough, you might say, but these only have a frequency response of 200Hz to...

Fuses by Jim Lesurf
Following on from some discussions in other threads I couldn't find any existing data on the resistance-current properties of fuses, so did a quick measurement as a simple experiment. The results are shown on the graph at http://www.st-and.demon.co.uk/temp/fuseplot.gif Note that this is fairly rought data and I only chose one 0.5A fuse for test purposes. Other individual types and values of...

Minijack to speaker conversion? by james
Is it possible to connect normal speaker cables (the ones that require the grip things) to a mini-jack style output on a soundcard? If so, how do I do it? Sorry for my lack of technical language but I don't really have a clue.

Hum problem: Using an Echo Mia soundcard with a stereo system by david
I asked this some months ago, and appreciate the helpful responses I received. However, I have still not solved the problem and so would be grateful for any further suggestions. Almost a year ago, I bought an Echo Mia soundcard and installed it in my computer. Up to now I have not got it to work properly, suggesting that my set-up is incorrect. My set-up: the soundcard is installed within a...

The Outer Shell by Spiderant
I once had a philosophy professor who casually mentioned to the class that when we listen to a recorded piece of music, we don't hear the entire spectrum of the music, but only the outer shell. He explained that when, for example, a classical symphony is recorded, only the extreme peaks and valleys of the signal are picked up and when the recording is played back, because the speakers can...
