New page on LS cables by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
Hi,
I've just put up another new page providing a web version of a HFN article.
This one is the first in a series on Loudspeaker Cable use. The second will
be put up in a while and looks at factors that run contrary to the
conclusions of the first! (The aim being to show both sides of the
argument. :-) )
The third article in the series is the results of a number of new

New page on room acoustics, amplifier power, etc by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
Hi,
Just to let people know I've just put up a new page which looks at the
effects of room acoustics and human hearing. In particular, to assess the
amplifier powers people might need. For reasons that should be clear if
you read it, the item is called "Imagine a Room Full of Mirrors". :-)
When I get a chance I'll also put up the first two HFN articles I did on
'Speaker Cables'.

A Speaker Shootout - B&W DM2 vs. TDL Studio 1m by
Adrian C
I've got a thing about acoustic lines and speakers :-)
A friend had a problem with WAF, and I've ended up with his old B&W
DM2's as after 35 years of his enjoyment his wife has made him buy
something a little more compact ;-(
So I've got 3yr old TDL Studio 1 transmission lines in this room, and
have rigged up the DM2's in a similar but opposite location. Mission
Cyrus straight line amp...

Recommend an IC please ? by
TonyL
As part of a low-fi audio system I need to drive a capacitive load.
Basically, the load is lengthy cabling with high impedances at the far ends.
Total load capacitance with the length of cabling used is likely to be
around 50nF which I know is far beyond what many audio op-amps will handle.
I've been staring at datasheets of ICs such as the LM8261, which can drive
capacitive loads but...

A new height of irony by
George M. Middius[_2_]
The Krooborg just demanded that it be made Ethics Commissioner for Usenet's
audio groups. (I'm not going to reproduce the post here. You'll have to dig
through the past 24 hours of Kroo-droppings on RAO.)

Rega P3 balance question by
max graff
Hi guys,
I recently bought a Rega P3 2000 on e-bay. Yes it sounds a beautiful
as a P3 should sound. However I notice the right channel is pulling a
bit of more weight. My records that used to sound like coming from
the
'center' now sound like they have their sound pulled more to the
right.
The equipment came like 'factory' packed and I had to adjust the

Hi-Fi versus monitor speakers by
TonyL
I sometimes read a magazine called Computer Music, aimed at wanabee and real
music "producers" to use the current vernacular. In this mag I keep seeing
references to monitor speakers being preferable to hi-fi speakers. The line
they take is that hi-fi speakers are designed to "enhance the sound" while
studio monitor speakers are designed so that you hear "what is really
there".
But there is...

Broken speakers by
Rob
I think one of my Dynaudio Contour 1.1 speakers has a fault. On music it
sounds as though something's rattling inside, or one of the drivers is
loose. I've taken the woofer out and it looks OK, insofar as I know what
OK is - nothing burnt or blown.
It's difficult to replicate with music, so I recorded a tone and this is
what it sounds like:

Headphones for careful listening by
D.M. Procida
I asked this on uk.rec.audio, and was advised to ask here - apologies if
this has been covered many times before already.
I have some material (music) that I need to listen to very carefully, so
that I can hear and comment accurately on what's needed to be done to it
to prepare a CD master.
I'm going to have to do this using headphones rather than speakers.
I can spend between £50-75...

Research on Usenet Member by
Fiddy64
Dear Group,
Firstly, forgive me for the intrusion and for being of topic.
Research has led me to uk.rec.audio and various other newsgroups with regard
to someone who used to post in here
Reading through the Usenet archives it seems this individual upset quite a
few people in here many years ago.

Old CD players by
Brian Gaff
You know I reached under my bed and found my old Phillips CD100 the other
day. It still works!
A bit touchy to seizmic events, slow to find tracks, band a bit on the
bright side of comfortable, but it does still play CDs.
Be an antique soon I guess. sigh.

Whatever it was, it's gone now.

the unique timbre that emerged from that once-great powerhouse of

Spendor tweeters? by
Lol
Tidying loft, came across a pair of Spendor Preludes.
Unfortunately, one is lacking a tweeter.
Now am I going to be able to source replacement tweeters, and is it worth it
compared to speakers in current use - TDL Near Field Monitors?
many thanks for any advice
(It's going to be "no" and "no" explains why they were in the loft!).

Rescuing an amp by plugging in a headphone socket by
Astley Le Jasper
My long serving Marantz PM 6010 OSE is ill and before I dump it, I
wondered if it was worth salvaging.
A while ago, one of the channels stopped working. However, when I
plugged a headphone socket in and then out, everything would be fine
for a few months. However, that doesn't work anymore.
Does that give anyone an idea of what's wrong with it?
It's hardly worth taking it to be checked out,...
