LP - Around the bend! by Jim Lesurf[_2_]
This is to let people know that I've just put up a new webpage http://www.audiomisc.co.uk/HFN/LP3/aroundthebend.html It is a web version of the third article HFN published in my series on the performance limits of Vinyl LP. It deals with groove and stylus curvature, and the requirements imposed upon the replay stylus. The next article in the series was some measurements of the performance...

Tape and Dolby by The Legend Returns
About a two years ago, I posted here about tapes. I messed about with my tape deck for a couple of evenings, then stuck it back in the box and forgot about it. Three days ago, I set it up and once again, have just spent two thoughrougly enjoyable nights putting some music back on tape and I'm now left scratching my head, why the format has virtually died out? Using the very cheap but...

Isolating speakers from the floor by Doki
Has anyone got any experience and suggestions of DIY methods of isolating speakers from the floor? I'm looking to do it to reduce the amount of noise transferred through the floor to downstairs, rather than as a method of altering sound quality.

Poofie B'ar, self-styled arbiter of PC-ness by George M. Middius[_2_]
Poofie brayed: How many wars did he start ? Perhaps you'd like to remind me. Getting forgetful in middle age, Poofster? Next thing you know, you'll be chewing suppositories and inserting breath mints. Don't let them keep you alive on machines. Make out a living will for god's sake.

LS Cables - Transmission Line vs Lumped Element by Jim Lesurf[_2_]
A while ago there was some discussion about loudspeaker cables and the relative merits of analysis using the transmission line and AC lumped element approachs. I've now done a page on this which people may find interesting. It is at http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/~www_pa/Scots_Guide/audio/shortstring/howlong.html Note that I decided to put this on the Scots Guide not AudioMisc. This is because the...

Quad 34 Problem by Rob
I've just plugged in a Quad 34 preamp that's been unused for a few years. When I turn the volume control up there's a series of loud high pitched clicks through the speakers, a bit like LP static discharge maybe. It was fine last time it was used. Does this sound like an expensive problem, or would I be better off punting it on ebay, and buying another (about £80 it seems)? Thanks, Rob

Recording Radio Programs & time shift by alan ralph
Hi All, There are quite a number of radio programs which I would like to record, to hear at a different date/time. At the present time my NTL/Virgin + box will not record radio programs, so is there anything on the market which will perform in a similar way ? I believe you can do this with Sky+, but what may be of interest is the freesat PVR's when they appear ? I notice some of the Ipod...

Bass response of Electrostatic loudspeakers by Serge Auckland[_2_]
I wonder if anyone knows how Electrostatic loudspeakers can have any sort of bass response. An ESL is a doublet that radiates equally front and back. With a normal cone loudspeaker on a finite baffle, the bass starts to roll off at a frequency whose quarter-wavelength corresponds to the smallest dimension of the baffle. Looking at the dimensions of, for example, the ESL63, the bass should...

Poofie the frenzied cross-dresser -- er, cross-poster -- brayed: A GOOGLE Bob imposter ? I heard a rumor your nipples are pierced and you can dangle a full-sized pineapple from each one. Quite impressive, Poofie.

My sad Pure Legato Story by G0XAR
Hi Everyone, I bought a Pure Legato brand new from a major retailer a couple of years back. I have not used it much at all - only at weekends for a couple of hours. Recently it has developed problems with the CD player, which will no longer eject CDs and my Ry Cooder CD is buried in the internals. Dont get me wrong here, for a micro system the sound is superb, however the non functional CD is...

Sound recording software for old PC? by [email protected]
Hello I've got an old PC with Windows 95 that I would like to use for converting a load of old cassettes to MP3 format, and I need some sound recording software. It doesn't need to do anything clever at all - just start recording and then stop, saving a wav file. Can anyone recommend anything please? I know people always seem to recommend Audacity, but that is only for Windows 98 or later.
