Optical audio connections by
Petert
Hi,
I'm about to move house and the new property requires a complete
rerwire, so I plan to take the opportunity to install audio and video
cabling.
My questions a
Is there any literature available on fibre for audio? I would like to
gain some understanding of it - light levels both xmit & rx.

Sound card with bit-perfect SPDIF output by

As subject line - need a sound card that gives a bit-perfect output on
SPDIF (optical or co-ax), either a PCI or USB device. So that rules out
Creative I guess?
Any suggestions?

Problem with channel balance resolved by
Marky P
For ages, I've had one speaker louder than the other. At first I
thought it was my turntable, but the problem persisted with other
sources. Swapping speakers made no difference, so I thought the amp
was faulty (Arcam AVR350). But what I didn't realise, is that the
speaker settings (for the 5.1 surround option) also affects stereo,
even when the amp is set to 'direct'. A quick adjustment there...

BBC test card by
Geoff Mackenzie
A few days ago someone posted info on finding the BBC Test Card (sorry,
deleted OP).
Would have been handy a couple of weeks earlier, when I was discussing with
a retailer the fact that my new Toshiba recorder had lousy definition and
distortion. Resolved satisfactorily once I got to an engineer ("Yeah,
software problem, we get loads back") rather than a salesman ("No, Sir, they
never go...

Blatant Blagging by
[email protected]
Hi guy. I know you don't like this sort of thing but I used to be a
kind of regular here, so I'm posting an ad for my much loved
NS1000M's. I first found out about these on this group, now it's time
for them to move on. C'est la vie.

What's wrong with ringing? by
John Phillips[_2_]
I often see texts that imply or state outright that ringing in time-domain
audio waveforms, usually associated with time-domain discontinuities,
is to be avoided. I wonder what is the basis for this.
For example, if you take a perfect square wave with all of its harmonics,
and mathematically remove all of those above a certain point you will
see a waveform with ringing. I think this is...

H-CAT and doppler control by
UnsteadyKen
I came accross this manufacturer
http://www.h-cat.com/
The technique sounds convincing but the
technical explanation is way over my head.
Has anyone experienced this brand and could
an expert type have a look at the bumf, and
give a verdict, does it make sense or is it
a solution to a none problem?
Ta.

Ben Duncan by
Geoff Mackenzie
Just curious - as there seem to be some pretty highly knowledgable people on
this NG, dooes anybody know anything of Ben Duncan? Produced some rather
good plans and kits in the 70's and 80's - I'm still using his AMP-02 which
was marketed by Audio Synthesis; I built it probably about 1990, maybe
earlier.
I heard he had given up the domestic scene and moved into stadium concerts
and so on....

HDCD revisited. by
Eiron
Someone has managed to reverse-engineer HDCD encoding:
http://www.srcf.ucam.org/~cjk32/hdcd
So now it's easy to decode an HDCD to a 24-bit file and see whether
each track has 'Peak Extend' and/or 'Low Level Range Extend'.
Looking at a few (King Crimson) CDs last night, only three had 'Peak Extend'
of which none actually needed it as they wouldn't have clipped anyway.
Any volunteers to correct...

Bleeding levels... by
Dave Plowman (News)
Just got an HD satellite receiver. My TV has a DVI-D input but the box a
HDMI one so had to spend a fortune on a lead. And of course another for
audio. Connecting the analogue resulted in audio a lot lower than
everything else - despite the box output being on max - so I tried the
SPDIF, same thing.
How come makers agree on picture levels but not audio?
Also, anyone know a source of short...

Where abouts of one Stewart Pinkerton by
none provided
Long time lurker of all the audio groups here. I have seen mention of his
name here and there but haven't seen him post in years. Does anyone have any
non rumour/solid information about what happened to him? He was an
interesting chap that rubbed a few the wrong way but had some interesting
things to say and teach. I am not abashed to say I miss his postings, I hope
life finds him well.

Dirty Digital [sic.] by
John Phillips[_2_]
Has anyone read the article "Dirty Digital" by Noel Keywood in July's
"Hi-Fi World"? I picked up a copy for some amusement during a journey
yesterday and was stunned by the article's technical incompetence.
Keywood says of CD that "dynamic range is limited to 85 dB or so by
dither noise" (incorrect - it's actually about 93.3 dB IIRC for 2 LSB p-p
of TPDF dither). Then he complains,...
