OT - Everything is perfect by
Andy Evans
Pinkie - Breakfast up, eh?
Mrs. P - Now, put that model aeroplane away and wash your hands. You look a bit
peaky, if I may say so. Have you been on that newsgroup again?
Pinkie - They just don't understand - I have to make them understand, it's my
mission. It's all about acoustical transparency. They just don't see that in
2004 everything is perfect from mic to speaker. It's all perfect....

CD transports by
Andy Evans
I've made an analogue PSU for my computer CD-rom and this is now serving as my
CD player for now. Sounds better than the switch mode PSU it came with. Many
thanks to ng mambers for help and advice. For the future - could ng members
outline what transports they use, and what good ones they have come across and
would recommend? Andy

POLL What other forums do you post to? by
Andy Evans
I think it might be interesting to see where contributors to this ng post (or
lurk) on audio topics. It would give an idea of the interests of group members,
and would also give some useful ideas on groups we might drop in on. Maybe we
could add a few words about why the forum is good, or what it is good at.

Bias adjustment II - 'The Reckoning' by
Keith G
Apologies for the delay for this 'joint reply' - interrupted by a little
post-prandial 'digestif' by way of a spot of Delius and VW (Larka Sending
and Symphony No. 6 - still playing! :-)
*Massive thanks* to *all* who responded and were, between you, just about
right on the money, from what I can see of it!! (Fekkin' valvies - too damn
sad/skint to be out on the ****/tiles/razzle on a...

I feel that I have no place in a group dominated
(some might say terrorised) by a psychotic Scot
from the print room, and a born-again Christian
with a mouth like a cess-pit.
Don't bother to reply, SP, I shall either be out
with the Airedale, or listening to Shostokovitch on
my hand-built (not home-built) valve amplifier.
Cordially,

'running in' new h fi equipment by
Robert
My new Cambridge Audio amp and tuner both carry instructions that the
unit should be run continuously (playing music) for 36 hours "to get
it performing at its best".
Does anyone know what such 'running in' is supoposed to do?

Low-pass filter thoughts by
Wally
As some of you may be aware, I have an on-going speaker rebuild fantasy
bubbling away in the background. The plan is to bi-amp, and part of this
involves a second line output on the pre-amp, to send a signal to the bass
amp. The bass/midrange driver will have no high-pass components in the
crossover - I intend to let the bass roll off naturally, and try to match
the low-pass filter feeding the...

MP3 Bitrates also Jitter by
Keith G
Seeing Stimpy's post where he mentions 320 Kbit MP3s has got me
wondering.....
I recently re-recorded my 'Top 20' CDs/CD rips at 256 Kbit due to now having
the space to be able to do it and they sound absolutely fine - good enough
to fool the 'Golden Ears Brigade' representative, hereabouts, a few nights
ago, as per my recent post.
I seem to remember someone somewhere saying that the...

Reproducing Vinyl by
Iain M Churches
The following is a tip passed on to me
by a BBC pal.
The surface noise of an LP can be greatly
reduced for transcription purposes by
playing wet. The BBC have been doing
this for many years.
One needs a solution of 60% distilled water,
and 39.5% Isopropyl alcohol (also sold as

SP - Golden Opportunity by
Iain M Churches
Stewart, in an earlier thread, about disc cutting, I asked
why you don't come and show us all how it is done.
You replied that you would be willing to do so.
There is a gig at Stockholm University, during the
first week of December, that needs an engineer, a real
engineer, not a microphone placer and a fader twiddler
like me, but an engineers' engineer like yourself.
It's a live concert with a...

Loopback Test Software by
Christopher Key
Hi,
I am using a creative Audigy 2 that connects to my AV reciever via a
homebrew toslink io connector. It has worked perfectly for 2 years, but
recently, I have started noticing glitches in the sound, manifested as pops
and clicks in PCM content, and squeaks in AC3 content, as well as poor
detection of AC3 content on my reciever.
I am keen to try to diagnose the source of these problems,...

Sub questions by
Keith G
I have recently received a cheap Chinese Sub which was badly dinged up in
the delivery (thanks a bunch, DHL...) and another one is being sent for just
a tenner to cover the shipping charges. So I've taped this one up pro temps
and have had some noises out of it and will give it a good thrashing
shortly.
Anyway , the instructions are in German, so I've got some questions about
the...

DIY Speaker cabinet construction by
Andy Evans
I'm about to embark on a speaker build, and I thought I'd check in to see what
useful things other speaker builders on this ng have found out. I've built
several before, but I thought to do something a little different. Design will
be a 2-way (or MTM) box. The first decision I've made is to use thick alu U
shape extrusions front and back. The sides will be bolted to the extrusion, and
the top +...

Then and now.... by
Keith G
I was going to tack this on to a post but accidentally marked the whole damn
thread 'as read'! (Seems my mouse has got more sense than I have... :-)
I wanted to make the point (it was the Armmstrong Siddeley Sapphire thread)
that the difference between 'motoring' 50 years ago, when I were a lad and
would go out for the day in me dad's lorry (which I learned to drive at the
age of 12), is...

Quad 11L speakers - anyone have any experience? by
Uncle Keith
Hi
I'm considering a pair of Quad 11L speakers to upgrade my current
system. They get rave reviews in all the mags but has anyone on here
actually heard a pair?
They're about the right size for my system and room (Arcam Alpha 9,
Arcam Diva CD82) but I want something that won't sound boomy near a
wall (about 12 inches away). I had to return a pair of B&W CDM 1's for
that reason.

Speaker recommendations? by
Stimpy
Due to accidental cat-related damage, it's time for me to invest in some new
speakers but, to be honest, I haven't got much of a clue about what's good
and not so good. I thought it might give everyone a break from the ongoing
"vinyl 'n' valves" and "Stewart is/isn't an engineer" arguments to give me a
few suggestions...
I'm currently running a pair of 20+ year old Kef Carltons off a Cyrus 2...
