Keith G's new amp by
Phil North
I went round to Keith's yesterday and heard the ch*nky amp for myself
and in summary I *really* liked it.
I'm not hugely experienced at auditioning equipment and don't really
know the lingo to describe what I hear but I'll have a go.
It was clear (open?), controlled (clean?), the bass was very good
considering the speakers and it was far louder than I could ever need at
home.
But what was...

Tuner, Myryad Z-130 by
Mark Beunk
Hi, I'm from Holland and I would like to ask you people something, but first
of all: my apologies for my bad English.
Let's get to the point. I've a Quad 99 Pre and a Quad 99 Power, a Myryad
Z-110 cd-player, a Creek OHB-21 headphone amplifier and a Sennheiser HD-650,
I do not have loudspeakers yet but I have a shortlist containing five
brands/models and I'm going to listen to them soon.
But I...

Scratched an itch today.... by
Keith G
I've been seeing these really cheep Ch*nky amps on eBay for quite a while
now and have often wondered what they were 'really' like for the money.
Then one turned up that looked a bit more 'workmanlike' than most with a
loopy starting bid of £189 + P&P (See Item No. 5722517133 if it's still
available) and after a little bit of argy-bargy with some dim 'Johnny No
Scores', who had to be dealt...

Anyone See "The Gadget Show" Today? by
Fleetie
On Discovery, I think it was.
Most of the show was about hi-fis and whether it's worth getting
a really expensive top-notch one, or not.
The best feature was, they got this guy in goggles, played him a
track of bare vocals (a folk singer) through a 1600 pound Linn
system, then they had the singer himself kneel between the speakers
and sing it live, and finally they played it to the listener...

Tape deck belts by
Ian Molton
Hi there.
No idea if anyone can help here, but I've just dug up my old (but decent
sounding) tape deck so I can transcribe some tapes, only to find that
its suffering from 'belt rot'. all the belts (4 or 5 of them) are shot
to hell - they stretch about 5 cm and slowly sag back.
I'd like to fix this deck, partly because its half decent and partly
because I've known it all my life.

Rant on copy protection (sorry!) by
Glenn Booth
What is it with these copy protected 'CDs'? Wifey bought Dido's 'Life
for Rent' a week ago from Smith's, and tried to play it in the car on
the way back from the shops. No go, her Golf's CD player wouldn't even
look at it.
When she got home, I tried it in my car CD player (erm, a Volvo, since
you ask) and again, it's a no go. So far, that's 0 out of 2. I took a
look at the label, and guess...

need help converting raw 4-bit comp soundfiles by
PBSL
Hi there,
Can anyone help me locate a DOS soundfile player that plays
raw 4-bit compressed soundfiles. or failing that an emulator
that emulates a microkey soundcard, www.val.com
There is no way I can see where how a soundblaster, ac97, ESS or any other
mass produced
soundcard can play these s32 files with mainstream software currently
available.

WilliamsHart Kits by
Derbydrummer
Ref. WilliamHart. I quite fancy the Single-ended 15W power amp kit, is there
anybody with experience of how it sounds and alternatives for the same money or
a bit more. Noticed from the web page it dates back to a published article
dated 1969. Any info on how to track it down without having to part with a
fiver. Not tight but I am sure it is freely available. (ok I am a bit tight)
Not...

Looking for headphone extension lead. by
Andy Hewitt
Having now got the Grado headphones, and got them nicely broken in, I
find the lead needs to be a tad longer to suit the position of my living
room furniture.
It only needs to be a couple of metres longer, but I can't find any
extension cables this short anywhere. That, or the one's I can find are
very low quality - like £1.99 on ebay. Most of the hi-fi stores I can
find don't even seem to sell...

KEF Eggs v JBL Control 1s by
Welly
I'm coming under some pressure to replace my 6.1 system, comprising 6 JBL
Control 1A's and a (first version of) REL Strata sub, with the KEF 2005.2 -
purely on aesthetic grounds (the KEF's are smaller and prettier and the wall
brackets are neater!). The system is currently driven by a Yamaha
RX-V540RDS, shortly to be replaced with the RX-1400RDS. The room is
approximately 5 by 3 meters.

Audio down UTP by
Sparks
If I wanted to have (Line Level) audio sent down a UTP cable, would I need
baluns each end like you do with composite video (CCTV)?
If so, where do I get some! (CCTV ones are 75ohms)
I assume I would need a pair for left, and a pair for right too?
Ta!

I am looking for one, they seem to be quite rare. I think they cost about £400
about 7 years ago.
