CD-player died, need advice by
Martin Schöön
Gentlemen,
I replaced the driving belt of my trusted old Thorens TD166
this week and today I find the CD-player has become so
upset by this it refuses to play or even acknowledge the
existence of the CDs I feed it.
The CD player is a Cambridge Audio thing (everything
important inside is labeled Sony) about five years
old (the Thorens is 25 years old).

Dual concentric by
Dave Plowman (News)
It occurred to me when fitting some new car speakers that a dual
concentric design would be ideal for this use. But they all seem to have
tweeters just stuck on the front. Any reason why this design has fallen
out of favour?

DAB Radio recorders by
David Houpt
Hi!
I wondered if anyone can advise?
I would like to record Radio 3 broadcasts that I can't listen to at
the time onto SD card(s) and then load them up onto my PC and play the
programme at a more convenient time.
Would something like the Pure PocketDAB 2000 Digital Radio be a
practical choice to do this?

Wiring questions by
Doki
Mildly OT as the wiring is for car audio, but I suspect I might get a bit
more sense here.
I'm going to be fitting some speakers, a subwoofer and an amplifier to my
car. The subwoofer is there due to the near impossibility of getting deep
bass out of the ordinary speaker fittings present, not to test the fixings
of the interior trim.
The recieved wisdom is to run all your phono cables...

Once I stopped watching television and listening to the radio at the. end of

Congratulations to Blue Note and Stacey Kent by
Serge Auckland
I just received a new CD today, Stacey Kent's "Breakfast on the Morning
Tram" . It's her first since signing to Blue Note.
I was impressed by the sound quality, and apparent lack of compression.
Ripping one track and analysing it, normalisation is a few samples below
0dBFS, with no sign of waveform clipping. Congratulations to Blue Note
records and to Curtis Schwartz who recorded, mixed and...

Headphone Extension Lead (approx 2m) by
Gav[_2_]
I am looking for an good (3.5mm jack to socket) extension lead for my
headphones. All I have come up with so far is the cheapo couple of quid
ones or this Belkin one.
http://catalog.belkin.com/PureAV_detail.process?Product_Id=172258
But after reading a few reviews on it people seem to be saying its not up
to much. Can anybody help me out, where can I find a fairly decent
extension lead? Gold...

Now let us praise Otto Herbert Schmitt by
Andre Jute
Ecclesiastes admonishes us to praise famous men, by which the
translators of the King James version meant not "celebrity" trash on
telly but useful achievers.
One of the greatest of these in electronics was Herbert Otto Schmitt.
Among his other inventions which we use daily are the cathode

Sherwood R525 by
the_constructor
Just been given a Sherwood R525 tuner with built in amplifier. It works
absolutely brilliantly. It has been stored in a loft for about 3 years.
Anyone any thoughts as to how good this item is.
I could do with a manual.....

Merry Christmas by
Andre Jute
This years I want to be the first to wish everyone a Merry Chistmas,
so we can establish the correct spelling right at the outset.
So, hoping to reach the RATs and UKRAnians in Kirimati, where it is
already 4.10pm on Monday (and 3.10pm Monday for tubies in New
Zealand), before they leave the office for happy hour, and rolling
around the world westwards from there, Merry Christmas!

Half Hertz very low level oscillation? by
Ian Thompson-Bell[_2_]
The 6AU6 based mic pre I am designing has an interesting quirk. I am
testing various valves for low noise with the first stage input grid
grounded. As expected different valves exhibit different noise levels
and susceptibility to hum. To eliminate hum from the readings my
millivoltmeter has an LF cut switch. When this filter is used I noticed
a small but regular variation in the indicated...
