Pioneer PL-512 playing too fast.... by
Les Hemmings
Further to the "getting back into vinyl" saga....
Now have it sounding great.... but it's playing too fast. Not by much, just
enough to make things sound a tad hurried with accompanying pitch shift.
What on earth could make it play fast?
It's not had a new belt for years, it's been stored unused for 7 years.
Could this be the problem? It's the last thing I can do myself I think
without...

180g Vinyl LPS - do they sound any better by
max graff
Hi guys,
Another novice vinyl question :-P
I have seen many *new press* LPs come in 120g as well as 180g versions
(later being dearer) of the same recording.
I was wondering if the 180g version was any better sounding than the
'lighter' one.

Wow, one watt is really very little energy by
Andre Jute
Every time I come back from riding my bike, the bike computer tells me,
among other useful information like my pulse rate, how high the hills
were, how fast I pedalled, what my road speed was, the temperature,
rates of descent, etc, etc, etc, much more stuff which I have my
computer print out in neat graphs. Among all this the bike computer
tells me how many watts I expended. The thing cheats of...

Biwiring with Nordost by
[email protected]
On a recent trip to the US I bought a set of Nordost Blue Heaven RevII
speaker cables at a very good price. The only problem I have with them
is that they are not set up for biwiring. Does anyone have any
experience of changin connectors on Nordost flat cables. At face value
it should be straight forward but I don't want to start hacking the
cable about until I am sure what the procedure is. ...

Bob Latham = Pommy Criminal Scum by
Phil Allison
** Dear " uk.rec.audio" readers:
150 years ago, England use to deport asinine ****wits like Bob Latham by
wooden boat, tied up in chains.
Sons of pox ridden whores like him regularly got chucked overboard for the
sharks to dine on.
A sort of impromptu genetic cleansing.

Stylus "weight"? by
Les Hemmings
Just got this (link below) for my Pioneer PL-512 to replace the Ortofon
VMS5E MKII it had originally.
Any ideas on what weight to use? I have some handy digital scales that
should do the trick. The whole thing is out of adjustment, anti skate,
weight... everything. Is there a site somewhere that will guide me through a
basic setup?
At the moment it sounds awful! Tinny, no volume and...

kef iq5 vs. iq7 by
Pixies
Hi,
I'm weighting in different speakers' choices for my Onkyo stereo
amplifier. The KEF iQ range seems reasonable, yet I find a little bit
weird their pricing policy: whereas my dealers ask me around 570 euros
for the iQ7 (each), the price for the iQ5 is 287 euros (each). Is the
upgrade worth that difference (almost twice)? According to different
opinions I heard, the main difference between...

Connecting subwoofers to a 2-channel audio amp. by
max graff
Hi guys,
I was recently caught up with a friend who is planning to upgrade his
main speakers to one with responses between 20Hz-20KHz.
I was told that one of the sales guys mentioned an alternative - Buy a
good pair subwoofers to support the pair of lovely Whatmough (40
HZ-20KHz) mains my friend already has.
I was wondering how could subwoofers be connected to a two channel amp

Integrating 2-Channel and Home Theatre by
[email protected]
All,
I am looking to make some serious electronic purchases over the next
few months or so. I have started out with a 50" Panasonic plasma, to
which I want to add a 5.1 speaker setup. In addition, I want to build
out a hi-fi 2-channel stereo system.
I recently visited a great guy in my area who is a reseller for some
great equipment (Cambridge Audio, Rogue Audio, Totem Acoustic, Joseph
Audio,...

Audio to MP3... by
Roy Hammond
For many years now my wife has recorded onto cassette tape, from her hifi
unit using its programming facilities, the daily radio BBC R4 plays, talks,
and
the Archers, and then listens to them on her walkman while doing housework,
gardening, and so on.
She's gone through many walkmans - the cassette deck mechanisms eventually
wear out. As an old telecoms/electronics engineer, I've enjoyed...

Quad 405 - TLO71 - OPA604? by
[email protected]
Hi,
I've recently acquired an early 80s Quad 405 which had been converted
to a Quad 405-2 by Quad in 1996 (the front label has been change to
'Quad 405-2'). This upgrade appears to have involved replacing the
complete output boards as those in the amp are marked 405-2.
These '96 boards are fitted with TLO71 opamps and I have read
elsewhere on the net that these ought to be replaced by OPA604...

Late downloads by
Alasdair
I like to listen to such programmes as "In Our Time" on Radio 4. I
can download them as podcasts for 7 days after transmission but I can
"listen again" to them for many months after transmission. Is there
any way I can download them from the "listen again" site to my iPod or
to my hard drive in any format which I can later convert to MP3?

DAB 4 U..?? by
Keith G
Without wishing to start the usual DAB/FM argument, I would point out that
this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ACOUSTIC-SOLUTIONS-DAB-TUNER-NO-RESERVE_W0QQitemZ190069897041QQihZ009QQcategoryZ22637QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
is an absolute bargain (in DAB terms) atm!
I have one of these (paid a lot more than this!) and I would say they are
very good on DAB (in a 'DABBY' kinda way) but can't speak for the FM...

Recently they had somewhat of a Dutch Auction on a lot of classical LP's; at
first $10 ea; a fortnight later $6.; I forgot...

Where should I go for discussion of Roland VS-880 digital recorder? by
David Kilpatrick
I have some (originally photographic) SCSI-to-PCMCIA 'drives', which I
thought would end up in a skip, but tonight I managed to rescue my
ailing Roland VS-880 harddisk multitrack recorder using one with a 1Gb
CompactFlash in an adaptor, removing its noisy HD, and getting the
machine to boot up and record faultlessly and silently on the CF card.
It occurs to me that other VS-880 (or similar...
