Please explain voltage ratings in EU by
Andy Evans
I'm completely frustrated by the re-classification of voltage ratings
in the EU. XLR plugs previously rated for hundreds of volts in
manufacturers instructions are now down-rated to 50v for "domestic
applications". Now I see amphenol AP and EP series are quoted, for the
4 pin, as service voltage 660v, but 50v for "domestic applications".
So is it legal to sell equipment where a 4 pin AP plug...

FS: Naim CDS2 & XPS by
[email protected]
Naim CDS2/XPS, both 1999 with serial numbers 152xxx, immaculate
condition with remote, S-XPS burndy, puck, £2600. It's had the pic
update so it can play those awful pretend CDs. I don't have the

perfectly.
Email me at if interested,
or feel free to ask me any questions. I'm in South Shields,...

I have the very album (beautiful little HMV 10 incher - turned up in the
recent 'Old Lady' collection) and I think it's *well worth* this price if
the postage to Lapland doesn't kill it! Here's a track and a bit for a
taste - your sort of thing, I...

One for the teccies... by
Dave Plowman (News)
Fixed a duff tuner for a pal - failed voltage regulator. After fixing,
plugged it into my test amp in the workshop it sounded very lacking in
top. For other reasons I tried it into my main system and it was fine.
Back to the test amp - no top. The test amp is normally fed off a fairly
low impedance pre-amp and isn't DC coupled, and did and does sound fine
off that.
The tuner output is an non...

Cartoon joke.. by
Keith G
I received a 'cartoon joke' from someone this morning which, for once, I
thought was quite good and will attempt to describe it here for your
amusement:
Agitated Moses, with tablets in his arms, staring up at the sky:
"Run that by me again - the Arabs get the oil and we get to cut the ends off
our *WHAAT*...!!??"

Don't suppose anyone's got a clip of Cliff Adam's 'The Lonely Man's Theme'
(the music from the famous 'You're never alone with a Strand' cigarette ad)
they could send me (or a snatch thereof)..??
TIA, but breath not held.....!! ;-)

Record player seismometer by
Don Pearce
With all the playing around that has been going in, I decided to have
a look and see how important it is to have a deck properly suspended -
I mean what does it actually do for you?
So here are three frequency plots (on one display). They show:
blue: The output of the cartridge resting in its holder
orange: The output when on the platter
green: the output when on the chassis

Tandberg tape recorder: repair? by
Ronnie
Had a TD20A 10" reel to reel for some years, and need to have it
repaired. The take up spool fails during 'Play' - it just doesn't
start, and the tape winds through the heads and isn't wound up.
I think this was a fairly common 'event' with the machines. I'd like
to get it fixed.
Tandberg's corporate site offers some links to companies in Norway and
US - a bit far from here in the UK. Does...

Unshrouded IEC Plug ? by
Phil Allison
** Hi all,
the Quad 306 " Instruction Book" ( ie owners manual, on page 4 ) warns
against the use of " unshrouded IEC connectors" for AC power.
There is an illustration given of an IEC, male plug with exposed pins.
Do they really exist ?

70's Chic Brit Components by
[email protected]
The other thread got me to thinking...
What is the ultimate 1970's vintage British hi fi system.
I'm thinking a Gale GT2101 turntable with SME arm, Lecson AC1
preamplifier with AP3 power amplifier, Lecson Tuner, and Gale GS401A
speakers with the chrome stands.
Love to hear your thoughts.... Quad 57's, 33/303/FM3, Linn perhaps?

Performance of two-channel over 5.1 for SOURCE DIRECT inputs by
max graff
Hi guys,
I overheard this sales guy saying that a stereo amp sounds lot better
than a 5.1 integrated amp while running 2 channel direct audio from a
analog source.
I could hardly make out the difference. Is this a sales pitch or can
one 'really' tell the difference when running it on 'high' end
systems.

Wow, one watt is really very little energy by
Andre Jute
Every time I come back from riding my bike, the bike computer tells me,
among other useful information like my pulse rate, how high the hills
were, how fast I pedalled, what my road speed was, the temperature,
rates of descent, etc, etc, etc, much more stuff which I have my
computer print out in neat graphs. Among all this the bike computer
tells me how many watts I expended. The thing cheats of...

Podcasts on Radio 3 by
David Houpt
Hi!
Apparently our chums at the BBC Trust have just issued their provisional
conclusions on On Demand services, including downloads.
Apparently classical music downloads are out because such if allowed
would damage the market. If you like that as little as I do you can say
so by replying to the public consultation...

Yet another facet of the Krooger problem by
George M. Middius
The Krooborg begs for its pre-church punishment.
Simple, Arnold. I.M. or harmonic distortion may be
present, but you don't sit there listening and say, "Ah,
yes, harmonic distortion. Thought I detected it! About
.05%, I'd say, just off hand."
You don't?
Instead of obsessing over meaningless measurements, Arnii, why don't you
