Interesting pic ! by Phil Allison
Hi to all, ever wondered how Dolby Digital 5.1 sound is ACTUALLY carried by a 35mm cinema film ? Turns out the 320 kbit/s DD data stream is encoded onto square, optical grids of about 60 x 60 bits & very cunningly fitted in * between* the sprocket holes !!

What's your view of speaker crossovers? by Andy Evans
For years I've been using a single driver now (Monacor 130AL, aluminium cone like a Jordan). Of course it's not perfect - bass is only just there and treble could be better. That's the deal. But nevertheless I add ribbon tweeters (Decca) and take them away. Yes, the ribbon sounds better but the crossover doesn't. So, what do you guys feel rocks your boat? Are you in the camp of full frequency...

Sailing by by Dave Plowman (News)
There's just been a bit about it on Feedback. Seems it was commissioned by the BEEB in 1962 as library music - which is why I came across it on a mood music CD. Dunno how many versions there are, though. The one played these days seems devoid of any tape hiss which I'd guess it would have if the original. -- *Gravity is a myth, the earth sucks * Dave Plowman ...

More blogging... by Keith G
OK, it's not too busy so here's a bit more blogging - so those who don't like it can walk on by... I have recorded a clip of fairly 'unmelodic' clart 4 times on different kit, as *similar* to each other as they could be played: http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/Test%201%20MP3.mp3 http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/Test%202%20MP3.mp3

Should I be looking for high sensitivity speakers or lower? by [email protected]
I have an 80 wpc amp and am thinking of replacing my speakers. I had read that sensitivity is often compromised in higher end speakers because higher end amps are often high wpc so can still drive them. Although this sounds plausable I've also read that valve amps are ofter low wpc. Besides dont amps prefer less work so they have more power in reserve for fast transients?

Phono Plug Uses by Geoff Lane
I've misplaced the manual to an AIWA NSX-5777 music centre. What is the purpose of the Line Out sockets, is Line Out an unamplified signal as opposed to the various speaker outputs which I assume are amplified. Geoff Lane

Rode NT1-A mic by Don Pearce
Well, they've arrived and my initial tests - just me talking - are impressive. My neighbour is having some scaffolding put up, and while I was chatting a pole clanged against something. On playback I was convinced while I was listening that it happened again. I am probably recording some music over the weekend, so I'll report back what I find. d

broken Panasonic Stereo by mock-schmock
I have a Panasonic SA-PM27 with a jammed CD changer. It's outside the warranty period and so repairing it would cost me. I suspect it would be just as cheap to buy a new one, but I detest this throw-away culture and also would really like to keep the stereo - it's only four years old and is visually stunning (and it sounds good too - always important). Does anyone know whether there are any...

Modern music. by Eiron
I was just listening to yesterday's BBC Radio3 afternoon concert (SKY+ is good for some things) and was rather amused to hear the announcer say that "Before we hear it the orchestra is going to tune." As if we can't tell the difference between tuning up and a twentieth century symphony! -- Eiron.

Amp for KEF iQ9 by Sharad
Hi, I listen to acoustic and vocal music. I love intimate close miked vocals and a lot of detail in my music. After listing to a few speakers, I have narrowed down to KEF iQ9 floor standers. Now I need to select a matching amplifier. Any suggestions? I have read some good reviews for the new Rotel RA-05 in W-HiFi. Going by the specs, a combination of RA-06 + RB-06 sound exiting, if I use them...

No bottom octave... by Keith G
For some odd reason, the minute you mention 'horns' ('backhorn-loaded fullrange, single driver speakers) to anyone they take great delight in telling you they don't have anything at the frequency extremes. (Like 95% of all other speakers that are commonly available *do*....??) Well, I beg to differ... After another recording sesh* last night, while the mics were still mounted and wired up,...
