Cheapish amplifier for Quad 22L? by Digby
I have recently purchased a pair of Quad 22L speakers and the previous amp has died, so I am looking at buying a new amp at about £500 or less. Can anyone recommend a suitable amp for the Quads? I want neutrality above all else because I listen to a lot of piano. I'm currently thinking Rotel and Cambridge Audio. Any ideas?

Noise on Project Debut III is back.... by lordy
For those of you following my saga at http://www.lordy.org.uk/noise.html, some noise has come back. (see latest mp3 clip at website). It is not as pronounced as the first time but its definitely there. I have not moved or changed any wiring since I hooked up this exchanged deck to my PC. Any ideas or suggestions welcome! (Well almost any... One certain individual can rest assured they are KF'd...

Help needed please - Cool Edit/Adobe Audition by Trish
Recorded (or thought I did) a friend's interview on a radio show. Streamed on Real Player, recorded using CoolEdit2000. Saved as mp3 (or so I thought). I went today to burn it to a CD for her and all I have is loud white noise. The file is the correct length and quite a large size, but is either not an mp3 or has been corrupted somehow. I'm wondering whether it's possible the information is all...

Fisher STV-875 speakers-need specs by DeserTBoB
On 3 Sep 2006 13:32:15 -0700, "duty-honor-country" aka Charlie Nudo of Drums, PA, who never served a day of his worthless life in the military, now confined to his single Google Groups account begged: does anyone know the efficiency rating of these vintage speakers ?? snip If you know, don't give it to him. Obviously, it's Charlie Nudo of Drums, PA again, who...

Fizzing Quad ESL problem by Derrick Fawsitt
I have just acquired a pair of Quad 989 ESL speakers and am delighted with them. I have however reported to Quad that there is a slight "fizzing" noise emanating from one of them. You have to put your ear close to it to actually hear it. It started to occur during the extremely hot weather we had recently here in the UK and Quad said they were inundated with calls about other users...

Is this too much noise for a budget turntable.. by lordy
Just breaking in my Project Debut 3 turntable. Nice sound but there is a lot of turntable noise. Its been a while since I've used a turntable in anger but I don't remember this much noise on my old Dual 505. I've uploaded a small mp3 clip (about 10secs) here http://lordy.org.uk/rising_to_the_top_-_keni_burke.mp3 (*) The background noise is only present when the stylus hits the vinyl - so I...

Phono Pre-Amp bass missing in action? by lordy
Now I've got my turntable sorted, although I'm spinning my discs via PC & headphones, the bass just sounds absent. Is this a common theme with budget phono-stages. (esp the Maplins one?). Come to think of it, would an external stage of say £40-50 be better than the one installed inside my old Cambridge Audio A500 ? Lordy

Blow ins, don'tcha just love em? by Keith G
I do love these blow ins - nothing for months/weeks at a time, then they swing by to put everybody right and pull a few of their betters up for the odd typo or a bit of 'wordplay'. Long on horse ****, short on sense and of no real use to man nor beast, most of 'em - and all headed for my ****ter (permanent setting) if they get out of line with me... (You can call me a **** if you like, but...

Dual CS505-1 by Nick
Just acquired a Dual CS505-1 turntable made in Germany that was sold in Canada. It is wired for a 115v 60Hz supply. How can I adjust the wiring inside the plinth for 230v operation in the UK? There is a small circuit board inside the plinth with 5 pins for external connections. The Dual SM100 motor has 2 identical windings. I suspect it is a 16 pole synchronous design.

Can anyone compare Ion/Naim/Exposure for me? by [email protected]
Here's my story, bear with me please!: I recently acquired a little Nytech CA202, which is every bit as rich and musical as I'd heard it was. I compared to a Rotel of the same era, and although not as detailed, it had none of the Rotel's "transistory" sound. In this, it kind of reminded me of a tube amp (I like tube amps, but I don't like the idea of changing tubes). I have yet to compare the...

Armstrong info wanted by Iain Churches
I am involved in the refurbishing of an Armstrong A220 valve amp. Jim Le Surf started his illustrious career with Armstrong Audio, and has been able to supply me with some good data on this amplifier from his website. http://www.st-and.demon.co.uk/Audio/200/200page3.html The amp on my bench has been well and truly "improved" over the years. There have been step circuits added

mounting Garrard 35SB record deck by Slowchordchanger
Hi, I've just removed a Garrard 35DB record deck from and old music centre and wish to make a plinth etc for it, I note that the deck was mounted on approx 1/2" plywood - is this OK or should I use MDF or chipboard. I would think that the requirements are rigidity to maintain a level playing surface and low vibration transmission? This is my first attempt at such a job - I'd appreciate your...

DAB am I missing something? by The Reid
I only take an interest in Hi Fi when my system falls to bits, which it has. I'm looking at a Hi Fi mag as I write, it appears to have lots of tuners and receivers (well not receivers, they seem to be missing from the listings) that are not DAB. Am I missing something, isn't analogue being switched off soon? Or did I misunderstand the news broadcasts of a while ago and FM radio is carrying on and...
