Active or passive loudspeakers? by
PK
I have a Roland VS-1680 hdd recorder for home recording, and wonder if
I should buy a pair of new loudspeakers to use with this recorder. I
know there are small active and passive speakers, but think that if I
buy 2 passive and connect them to my amp, I also can play cd's through
these speakers, and I suppose I don't can do that with active speakers?
Anyone that knows a little about this?

Why NOT Cambridge ??? by
SoundSweeper
Hi UK Audiofreaks,
I'm considering to buy a stereo set (CD player, Amplifier, Tuner and DVD)
I've heard that Cambridge might be a good choice.
Is there a reason why NOT to buy this brand ???
Thanks,
barry

Format for domestic CD/DVD players by
Alasdair
I have a piece of music on a CD in wav format. It plays beautifully on
my computer but when I put it into an ordinary CD player, it wouldn't
play it. To what format shall I have to convert the music so that it
will play on an ordinary domestic CD player please?

My classical/jazz LP collection is going on ebay - offered here first so hurry! by
Andy Evans
I have numerous classical LPs which, being a musician, I selected very
carefully for performances. These are good and in good condition. They
are going to go for nominal sums to callers - I live in Kensington,
London. I also have some desirable jazz and funk CDs like Bluenotes and
CTi. These won't be given away, but we can negotiate realistic prices.
I have loads of Miles Davis, Coltrane, Bill...

MP3 player and FM transmitter by
Trevor
Like many no doubt, I got an MP3 Player and FM transmitter recently. The
player is a Creative Zen V and the transmitter is creative. In the house
with the hi-fi it works reasonably. In the car I get a one second beep about
every 30-60 seconds.
I could never imagine how they could work in a car when the car aerial is
the other side of a sheet of metal.
Is there anything I can do?

decent speakers???? by
Lil' Ol Man
I have an ancient pair of humongous floor standing Sansui sp 7300 speakers
which my father envies. He says that the quality compared to his speakers at
home is brilliant. He wants a replacement pair of proper speakers , listens
to classical and bras music, is a REAL musician (not like me) and so has a
good ear for sound.
What could I get him for his birthday that are in the £150 price...

Ortofon project k4 by
max graff
Dear all,
I have recently purchased a Project Debut III turntable with a NAD PP2
Phono Stage.
The debut 3 comes with a Ortofon OM 5E cartridge which sounds really
great. Though I really liked the feel and smothness of the Rega P3
which was a bit beyond my budget.

Pioneer XR-P470C Mini system CD section duff by
Slowchordchanger
Hi,
I've recently bought a secondhand XR-P470C mini system which has a duff CD
section and would like some advice as to what is likely to be wrong with the
CD unit.
At present, the units CD tray will open and close, the unit will change CDs
(3 can be used)
but after going through a check of all three CDs the unit displays "No
Disc". All I've tried so far is inserting a CD head cleaner disc to...

General care and maintenance tips for my turn table by
max graff
Hi guys,
I am a newbie turntable user and have a question for you.
Each time I start or stop my turn table mechanics with my amp still
powered on I see my woofers giving a low frequency boom. This is guess
is the sound picked up by the tone arm etc.
I can actually see my woofers breathing in and out when this happens.

Arcam Solo vs NAD separates by
NickD
Posted this question last week but no responses. :c( So on the
off-chance that someone has an opinion...
I currently have a NAD C320BEE amp, C521BEE CD player and C422 tuner
powering some Kef Q1 speakers. Very nice setup, good sound, fantastic
speakers.
Unfortunately space is going to become a major issue, so I'm
considering trading in the NAD separates for an Arcam Solo to run the
same speakers.

Negotiating on price - Arcam/B&W by
mark
Hi all,
I'm looking to upgrade for the first time in ten years and I'm
interested in other people's experiences with shopping for these brands
which aren't available on the internet.
I understand that many people prefer shopping at a main dealer.
Personally, I'm always happy to accept the risks and buy direct if I
can get a good price. I think the last big ticket item I bought in a
shop was a...

What would you give up last? by
Andre Jute
The other day I was wondering if I could manage to live in a smaller
space. My hi-fi, mostly in boxes, takes up rooms. My discs would take
up hundreds of feet of shelf space if shelved; I keep them edgewise 250
or so per flat box with the boxes stacked six or seven high; you can
build real muscles moving all the boxes to get at a disc in the
bottommost box. The discs take a lot of floor space and...

Can this ignoramus really be an engineer? by
Andre Jute
Graham "Poopie" Stevenson claims to be a qualified engineer. Yet he

a rod is concentrated in the narrow section of the rim.
Is that so Jootikins ?
